Connections from other lives

image.png

Personal file photo

Our connection is so special, that many times we have communicated without talking to each other, just by looking at each other. My sister knows what I might be thinking just by looking at my face and vice versa: I can tell what she is thinking just by looking at her eyes. Likewise, on many occasions, we have communicated through dreams or "thought-calling" each other. Out of the blue, her name has come to my mind and I have called her, only to have her pick up the phone and say:

"Sister, I was just about to call you because I need to talk to you."

Last year, this kind of relationship reached such a special degree of connection that I can only think that there are before being in the womb relations.

Know each other, communication and undestanding

All stories are beautiful and have happy ending filled with roses, accompanied by sweet kisses and sumptuous displays of affection. But life is not dictated by stories. There will be good and bad times. You could immortalize your life in those simple good moments, but you must know that a first-impression connection cannot sustain the person you love and protect forever. You must contribute more than just a connection.

As the sun made me sweat and tan, I kept that in mind: a connection is not enough. I had known for a while that two people will never think alike, so I measured my words and sometimes, if I said something, it could be misinterpreted.

A bond of words

don't know how or when it happened, but I felt a connection between the two of us that went beyond the screen, something that bordered on the spiritual and held our souls together. Perhaps, I was being overly romantic or dramatic (I always have been), however, that was how I felt and I wrote her several poems where I let her know, with the intention of making her fall in love, just as she had made me fall in love with her verses and her stories, which were not romantic but showed great intelligence, sensitivity, and writing skills.

However, we both knew that our thing wasn't going to last a lifetime, that we weren't really living, and that we needed to get out of our bubble and share with people we could see, hear, smell, and touch. We needed to get away from the screens and get back to our lives, to appreciate what the world has to offer.

The Latent Roar

"Tòngkǔ" was the word I heard.

I shivered in fear, remembering the folklore that our race possessed the Tòngkǔ, a figurine imbued with magical powers to force a member of the pack to turn if he refused to do so voluntarily. It was a tool used to enforce obedience many centuries ago. But it had gone missing for so long that it became a myth, one to scare children with.

Then it strode on all fours, walking in circles around me, purring like a cat. Every purr needled me with fear because I was stuck in a realm where I was powerless.

My inner animal stared at me, pain and fear etched in its eyes, my eyes.

Reasons, Seasons, and Lifetimes

These were all good challenges given the context, and I actually agree with them for the most part. The problem is that when shit like this happens, I feel it's incumbent on us as human beings to reflect. What may be obvious to the bystander is not always immediately obvious to the one embroiled in it... you see... sometimes we are too close to the situation for our own good! So challenge and reflection are needed. I look to see if there are lessons to be learned from the experience... in this case... either from the friendship itself, or the way in which it took a turn. Was there something more that I could have or should have done to sustain it? Did I fall short in some way? Should I be fighting for the friendship, or letting it go? Is this one of those push-pull moments where it really does matter what path one chooses?

We Make Our Own Circles

image.png

It was on a train to Bath that I realised completely that I was okay on my own, and that I did not need a relationship to complete me at all. I remember my forehead pressed to the glass, watching the streaks of leafless trees form black brushstrokes across the landscape as the train sped south and the muddy fields beyond, and closer, my distorted reflection and half smile of happiness. It was better than that. Being on my own was blissful. I could see myself moving through time and space as an intelligent, adventurous and creative young woman, a mother, a daughter, a friend - but not a lover, or a wife. That was, for the first time in my life, more than a reasonable proposition. It left me feeling open to possiblity, and weightless. I realised that I was my own circle, and that I needed no one to draw the other half. I wasn't even a half. I was a whole, complete, beautiful being, desiring for no one.
