Her Return

She looked up to her father. His once sharp and hard eyes were softening.
“After what you've been through, it must have taken a lot of courage for you to walk back through that door.” her father continued. “So tonight,” he raised his glass, “we welcome her. Not as a disgrace. It's not a shame. But as our daughter and sister who have finally come back home.”
For a second, no one moved.

The boy ran out of the room. He said goodbye to his mother and was off like lightning. Then he remembered something important and, with bated breath, returned to the kitchen and grabbed some milk from the refrigerator.
“I couldn't leave without drinking my super-powered liquid. Otherwise, I wouldn't win,” Antony told his mother as he handed her the empty package.
“Haha, you're such a comedian kid.” Sofia looked at the boy in a bodybuilder pose.

Finally At Ease

After I graduated from the university, I joined a firm and started working. I thought that the shadow of fear had left but without notice, the pattern had deepened. My colleagues liked me, but I never trusted it.
One afternoon, I walked into the General office and everyone suddenly went silent. Instantly, there was a sharp, invisible knife that pierced through my chest.
Trying to hide my innermost thoughts, I smiled. “Hi.”

Three Years, One Heartache

I've been with him for fourteen months now. Almost a year and a half of steady love, patient love. He's good. So, so good. Gentle in ways Daniel never was. Steady, kind. He sends sweet text messages, gifts, remembers the way I like my noodles slightly burnt, listens when I talk about my childhood even if he's heard the stories before.
He loves me. Wholeheartedly. And I love him too.

Madam Jane, you won't be the one to tell me when I'll have a friend over." She would always say.
"Janet, this isn't funny anymore. I can't keep sleeping out because of your friends. I paid a higher rent for this room, but I can't remember the last time I slept here. I've been tolerating this act of yours, but I can't do that anymore." I said to her.
"Kill yourself if you want, or you can move out, but I'll do whatever I want and you won't do anything about it." She replied and went away.

Thorn in One's Side

Their real trouble began the day Mama Nkechi decided to rent out her backyard room to a new tenant: one brother Sylvanus. He was the type of man whose trousers reached his chest and whose mouth never stopped quoting scriptures—even when he was chewing goat meat.
"I'm just here temporarily, "he had said, eyes darting around like a fugitive prophet. "Till the Lord finally plant me where I will actually flourish." He said, chuckling.

It's all in my Head

His grandma gave him the list of the cat's schedule and lectured him of her feeding times while he listened to it and sent her off saying.
"It's just an old female cat, What could possibly go wrong."
He was quite validated in the fact that no one could have predicted that the cat would die.
Yet he can predict that if she doesn't come back to life before his mom and grandma come back, he will die next.
