Drawing and Poetry | "Letting Go" - My New Series of Poetry Art

in Sketchbook6 months ago

A few days ago, I shared my latest series of drawings combined with poetry. You can check out that post here: Drawings and Poetry | "Amnesia" - My Latest Series of Poetry Art.

Since finishing that series, I've been busy working on a new collection of poetry art drawings. With the school holiday providing a more relaxed daily routine, I'm taking advantage of this extra free time to focus more on my art.

I haven't decided on a suitable name for this new series of drawings yet, but for now, I'm calling it "Saudade." Saudade is a Portuguese word that means:

...is an emotional state of melancholic or profoundly nostalgic longing for a beloved yet absent something or someone. It derives from the Latin word for solitude. It is often associated with a repressed understanding that one might never encounter the object of longing ever again. It is a recollection of feelings, experiences, places, or events, often elusive, that cause a sense of separation from the exciting, pleasant, or joyous sensations they once caused. ~ wikipedia

Beautiful, isn't it? It's one of my favorite words. Did you know that "Day of Saudade" is officially celebrated in Brazil on January 30th? Very interesting! If any Brazilian HIVERS are reading this post, I'd love to learn more about this day, so feel free to share your insights in the comments section 🙏 .

🎨 The Drawing 🎨

The Saudade series will feature 7 to 8 drawings, each paired with a poem. I've already written six poems and am currently working on the seventh. If I feel inspired, there might be an additional poem, but we'll see. The poems are interconnected, almost like a short story. While they are mainly fictional, each one is inspired by real people and experiences from my life.

The first drawing is titled "Letting Go." It narrates the story of an old man and the orphan he raised. As I mentioned, this series draws inspiration from real people and events, incorporating various anecdotes and stories about the orphan that I've gathered from strangers and friends over the years.

I didn't take many progress photos of this drawing except for this one.

📝 The Poem - "Letting Go" 📝

He remembers the day you came to him --
a boy with eyes of sorrow,
abandoned by fate, left to fend for yourself,
sharp intellect, boundless potential,
manners rough-hewn,
raw, untamed.

He took you in,
watched the years unfurl
with the ebb and flow
of your presence.
You, disappearing for months,
only to return as though
no time had passed at all.

As years slipped by, he learned
the art of letting go,
releasing you into the wilds
of your nonchalant nature,
your carefree wanderings.

For all your silence,
your words unsaid,
you cared for him
as he did for you.

A bond unspoken,
an understanding deep,
where affection was threaded
into the spaces between words,
held in the quiet moments
of simply being.

And in this quiet acceptance,
he found peace
in the certainty of your return,
in the fleeting yet constant
nature of your love.
