Crayon-Like Portrait

in Sketchbook10 months ago

Hello everybody,

And welcome back to emanate artworx! Today I'd like to share with you a portrait I made to test out IbisPaint's crayon-like effect using the gouache (mix 2) brush.

I saw the "Crayon Art (Analog Like)" tutorial on the Ibis YouTube channel, and it looked so cute, so I really wanted to see what I could do with this newly discovered technique.

As many of you already know, I have a passion for making art with traditional materials and with digital techniques. When I was a kid growing up in the 90s, I used all the regular supplies (pencil, paper, colored pencil, markers, acrylic paint, and so on), but it wasn't until a year or two ago that I began using software to make art.

I really can't choose which one I like better 😆

That being said, it's no surprise I recently made an artistic detour back to crayon world in my 2 Doors post.

So far, for digital art, IbisPaint is the app I have used the most because it's super portable and versatile. There are probably hundreds of different brushes and lots of effects and features. I use Ibis on my phone - I can take it anywhere and no cleanup is required, yay!

Now for this "digital crayon" portrait. If we're being honest, it's more of a study, considering she doesn't even have both eyebrows. There are sooo many ways to render. As someone who is not very well seasoned yet in the digital arts, coloring and rendering have been my greatest challenges 😭. That's why every portrait is a little different from the last because I am still figuring it all out. 💖

Exploring.

On my last portrait post, Miss Anon, there was a lot of surprisingly positive feedback from you guys, encouragement to continue in that direction. Less shiny, perfect, happy - more mysterious, dimensional ...surly. Noir 🌚. Almost totally against my personality-haha!

🫠 Storytelling is a skill I'm still working on improving -- please stand by. In the meantime, enjoy these close-ups.

Nice one. I like the crayon effect. I never heard of Ibis Paint before and never did any kind of art on the phone. Do you use a pen with it or paint with your fingers?

Thank you! 💖🖍

Yes, if apps were people, Ibis and ecency would be my BFFs 😆. ☝️At first, it was hard to get used to using my finger, but now it's actually more difficult to use a stylus with it. It's very rudimentary compared to what blender can do! Different ballparks. : )

Really cool experiment! I like the sketch part very much:) And love how you did the lips, so subtle :)

I've got new toy recently - a drawing tablet with screen(I was using wacom intuos without screen for some years), and trying myself with that too. Still prefer to stay away from screen if I can help it, but it is truly - sooo much fun!

Thanks! Sketching is one of the most fun parts to do. The makeup was inspired by the douyin trend 😊.

Oh, sweet! Yes, something about drawing on the screen is really liberating (undo, undo, undo). Plus all the neat effects and whatnot. It's a great thing to have the freedom to go between both, screen/paper.

Do you have a digital project idea up your sleeve?

douyin trend

I had to google this one up, not gonna lie:) Care to say more about it?

That's the thing! When I was using tablet too much, and then was working with pencil, I would draw a line, then not being happy with it - and looking for 'undo' button 🤣 it is mad like perception is changes becouse of this things :D

Do you have a digital project idea up your sleeve?

Yeah, working on it, but it takes me ages to get done. I am stubborn and I insist to use it like regular 'real life' medium, instead of using shortcuts in Photoshop :D

Picture should be ready before weekend hopefully:)

Regarding douyin, to me, it's a very pretty style, although it looks overly artificial sometimes. It's so popular now that it's becoming a little generic. Personally, I'm a bit too old to wear it ; )

...Wait until you mistakenly try to zoom in on the paper 🤣. Then you'll know you've reached a new mind fk level! Maybe it's not entirely a bad thing?

Part of using digital tools is figuring out a work flow that makes sense. There are lots of ways to combine and create! Have fun with it.

I hardly ever do make-up, and working from home doesn't really help in that regard :D

Happened.. numerous times already :D

I had to put it away for a while, becouse I've spent so many hours with my nose nearly touching the screen I got really bad head ache :D Tablet without screen is apparently bit safer for me :) Just have to work on my posture during work I guess :)

I know what you mean about not wearing makeup that often. Somehow, it seems less important now than it did in my teens/early 20s.

Haha! Welcome to the madness. That's why it's nice to have the option of switching back to paper and traditional materials. It gives the most freedom, compared to being chained to the screen 😱.

Enjoy your weekend!

Same, somehow even though I actually should use more make up now to cover years of my exitance - I just don't care that much about it. So can relate completly.

Yep, the choice is the key:)

Have a good one too!

I love the close ups! 😍 Same as CS, it has some crayon/chalk textured brushes. Well done! 😍

It's kind of a weird thing, right? Using software to imitate a distinct physical material. Maybe that's why it's so fun to use digi 🤩.

Thanks, Ji!

This is beautiful! Like perfect and more! Nice work 👍 keep doing ☺️❤️

Aw, what a great compliment. Thank you so much!! 🥰 Will do 🫡.
