"Discern Life" (my original artwork)

in Sketchbook4 years ago

Today, I’m taking a different approach with my sketch which I feel is an exciting journey for me as an artist. In my earlier posts, I usually sketch characters that are famous and with a lot of references like Iron Man (Avengers), Toothless (Night Fury dragon), and the latest which is Groot (Guardians of the Galaxy). I really enjoy making drawings of them as it helps me refine my skills. The only issue is that I don’t feel that I’m growing as an artist.

Since the beginning of the quarantine period, I have told myself that at some time I would rekindle with the hobby that I thought was forgotten. Currently, I have a lot of spare time and so I decided to start with some basic sketches. I actually started with some basic hand & face sketches and then transitioned to character sketches. It felt good knowing that I still have the skill to produce something better than what I expected.

The positive feedback that I got from this community gave me the hint that I had to transition to my real goal, to grow as an artist. I wanted to create sketches that will showcase my creativity and own expression.

Earlier today, as I was conceptualizing my subject I had a really difficult time deciding what kind of subject will I portray. It was a lot harder than expected. So, to make things a lot easier I thought of making a sketch about my understanding of life.

Wheel of Fortune 1fn.jpg

In this artwork, I imagined life in such a way we play the wheel of fortune. We have priorities and possibilities. We may try to achieve it however, not all of us may land to the things that we wanted. As we spin and look through it as it rotates that flashes of possibilities will pass-by through us. Some of us will wait until the wheel stop while some of us will try to take-over the rotation and fight for it to stop the choice that we want.

Here’s the progress of my sketch:

To end this post, I want to leave a question that you may or may not answer.

Will you wait for the wheel to stop and land to something random or will you take-over to land to something that you want?

I absolutely love this piece and really enjoyed you opening up about your growth process as an artist — going outside the comfort zone to really discover what it is you have to express. All the best as you move forward and hoping to see more of your stuff here :-)
