A propósito de mi publicación anterior aquí donde di a conocer la inspiración por la cual decidí empezar en el mundo del retrato realista, una idea nueva empezó a rondar en mi mente. Volver a mirar el dibujo que fue mi punto de partida me empezó a generar nostalgia, recuerdos, pero sobretodo curiosidad de saber cómo se vería el mismo dibujo si lo hubiese realizado actualmente, con todos los conocimientos que he adquirido a través de los años, constancia, disciplina y dedicación.

About my previous publication here where I shared the inspiration why I decided to start in the world of realistic portrait, a new idea started to come to my mind. Looking back at the drawing that was my starting point began to generate nostalgia, memories, but above all curiosity to know how the same drawing would look like if I had done it today, with all the knowledge I have acquired over the years, perseverance, discipline and dedication.

Primero observé con mucha paciencia el retrato, quería saber como aplique mis técnicas y mirar la proporción, para esto necesite la imagen que utilicé de referencia en aquel entonces, como no tengo el disco conmigo (lo deje en Venezuela) decidí buscar la imagen por internet. A pesar de mirar mis errores si pude sentir admiración de que tan solo con 15 años y nunca haber estudiado arte (mas allá de las pocas horas del colegio) ubique bien las luces y sombras, el difuminado era suave y hasta cierto punto tenia parecido a la foto. Decidido a conocer cuánto he evolucionado, materialice mi idea. Aprovechando la foto de internet realice nuevamente el retrato, pude hacerlo en un solo día, aunque me tomó unas 12 horas.

First I observed with a lot of patience the portrait, I wanted to know how I applied my techniques and look at the proportion, for this I needed the image that I used as a reference at that time, as I don't have the disk with me (I left it in Venezuela) I decided to look for the image on the internet. In spite of looking at my mistakes I could feel admiration that with only 15 years old and never having studied art (beyond the few hours of school) I placed well the lights and shadows, the blurring was soft and to a certain point I had a resemblance to the photo.
Determined to know how much I have evolved, I materialized my idea. Taking advantage of the photo from the internet I made the portrait again, I could do it in one day, although it took me about 12 hours.

Antes de empezar, guarde el primer dibujo para poder compararlo al finalizar. Mientras iba realizando el boceto me di cuenta que aunque utilizaba el lápiz HB (misma medida que el primero) para esto, ya en mi mente sabía que usaría lápices muy oscuros para el sombreado y difuminado, y ese es mi primera evolución a través de los años, no le temo a los 6B, 8B, 9B, de hecho suelo utilizar 4B para sombras muy suaves, algo que con anterioridad no podía, me ganaba el temor a dañar el dibujo.

Before starting, I saved the first drawing so I could compare it at the end. While I was making the sketch I realized that although I used the HB pencil (same size as the first one) for this, already in my mind I knew that I would use very dark pencils for shading and blurring, and that is my first evolution through the years, I am not afraid of the 6B, 8B, 9B, in fact I usually use 4B for very soft shadows, something that previously I could not, I was afraid of damaging the drawing.

Avanzando el dibujo utilice un esfumino Faber Castell para difuminar áreas pequeñas como el rostro y pocas áreas de la camisa y cuello. El resto del difuminado lo realice con algodón, hisopo y papel higiénico (mi favorito). Aquí note el segundo error del primer dibujo, difuminaba con los dedos, algo que nunca recomiendo, especialmente si estas empezando en el realismo en grafito.

Advancing the drawing I used a Faber Castell sketch pencil to blur small areas such as the face and a few areas of the shirt and collar. The rest of the blurring was done with cotton, cotton swab and toilet paper (my favorite). Here I noticed the second mistake of the first drawing, I blurred with my fingers, something that I never recommend, especially if you are starting in graphite realism.

Para finalizar le di detalles con lápiz 9B, un portaminas con minas 2B para detalles mas mínimos para el efecto de sombras; goma moldeable y lápiz borrador con brocha para efectos de luz. Mirando el dibujo nuevo sabia que necesitaba algo de contraste para mejorar la ilusión del cabello, por eso decidí hacer un pco de polvo de grafito con el lápiz 9B y darle fondo oscuro.

To finish I gave details with 9B pencil, a mechanical pencil with 2B leads for more minimal details for the shadows effect; moldable eraser and eraser pencil with brush for light effects. Looking at the new drawing I knew that I needed some contrast to improve the illusion of the hair, so I decided to do a little bit of graphite powder with the 9B pencil and give it a dark background.

Llego la hora de comparar, saque mi primer dibujo y lo coloque al lado del nuevo. Lo mas resaltante fue el cabello, era totalmente distinto, la proporción de nariz, el cuello y hombro izquierdo del primer dibujo eran mas grande. Pero si hay algo que puedo destacar es que para mi primer dibujo solo use lápiz HB y 2H, ambos escolares, difumine con el dedo ya que no conocía ninguna técnica, no tenía profesores ni existía youtube, usé borrador escolar, hoja blanca tipo oficio para impresoras, pero el elemento más importante fue la imagen de referencia, era solo una foto, más pequeña que la palma de la mano de un niño y no era de alta calidad. Aun así, con todas mis limitantes logre hacer un dibujo que hasta hoy me llena de orgullo, lo que demuestra que para el arte no hay excusas.

But if there is something I can highlight is that for my first drawing I only used HB and 2H pencils, both school pencils, I blurred with my finger since I didn't know any technique, I had no teachers and there was no youtube, I used a school eraser, white sheet of paper for printers, but the most important element was the reference image, it was only a photo, smaller than the palm of a child's hand and it was not of high quality. Even so, with all my limitations I managed to make a drawing that to this day fills me with pride, which shows that for art there are no excuses.
