A quick update blog and a bit of character-building

in Sketchbook4 years ago

Hey HIVE, what's up? I just wanted to check in and say that I entered an online art course that lasts through all of June. It is going to be challenging in many ways, especially taking me out of my comfort zone of digital art. The eventual final project is creating an original acrylic painting on wood panel.

Anyway, we have lessons and assignments daily, and I began drawing with pencil and pen for the first time in years. It feels quite awkward, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. One assignment that is due in a couple days is to look at art that inspires you and create characters that are spin-offs of the style or concept. I was always very inspired by the Metroid Prime art, a great game that came out when I was younger for Nintendo Gamecube. Both the enemies and the main character, Samus, as well as the whole environment, has such an awesome and cohesive art direction.

Check out this gallery where you can see a bunch of the concept art.

I was in a bit of a funk today and didn't really feel like drawing too much... but I did some work anyway. The guy directly bellow is some kind of Jellyhead inspired by a "metroid..." maybe he would have a see-through scalp and a bunch of weird neuronal matter inside?

Just drawing some faces on actual paper.... feels strange...

A bunch of the metroid enemies have these organic looking geometrical forms... I thought about that while drawing this guy.

This guy is literally a face on the strange skull of a beetle-type of enemy in Metroid.

So, yeah. I don't really know what I'm doing, but I am @sketching. I'll see you all soon with another blog, hope you have a great day!

All images are my original work made for Hive.

This last image was an exercise I did for day one of class, and was one of the first traditional media drawings I've made in a very long time.

Very good... Sketching off the computer using art supplies will be closer to nature. Keep us posted on the art class. I'm working on an acrylic on canvas. I should be finished this week.

Nice drawing trial of some strange faces.
I wish you best in your new course. Hopefully, you will get to learn more and more.
