Today I went to the construction site of a large water dam in North Aceh. The construction of this Keureuto Dam is a government discourse in Indonesia to reduce the risk of catastrophic flooding from upstream to downstream. This building was built precisely in North Aceh Regency, Aceh Province.

The Keureuto Dam dams the Krueng Keureuto River which has 6 tributaries as the main cause of flooding in the downstream areas. With a capacity of 215 million / m3 it has the main benefit of reducing floods that often inundate areas in Lhoksukon as the capital of North Aceh Regency. In the construction of this dam also provided a special flood pool of 30.50 million m3 which is able to reduce flood discharge up to a return period of 50 years so that the total flood reduction is 1,225.53 m3 / second.

At present the dam construction progress has reached 68% and is targeted for completion by the end of 2020.

Aside from being a flood control infrastructure, this dam is expected to have benefits for meeting clean water needs and supplying raw water of 0.50 m3 / second, supplying an area of 9,420 hectares of irrigation water consisting of intensification of the Alue Ubay Irrigation Area (DI) covering 2,743 hectares and extensification in the Right Pasee covering an area of 6,677 hectares. The presence of dams also has the potential to become a source of electricity generation (PLTA) of 6.34 MW.
