Exploring the amazing streets of Barcelona! | DPend Goes To Spain

Hello!

I have some more images to share with you today from my first day ever in Europe. We wandered around the streets of Barcelona in and around the gothic quarter, where there is a lot of wonderful old architecture, including the amazing cathedral that is pictured at the top of this post. (If anyone knows the name of this church, please let me know as I have never found out!) [EDIT — I found it on Pinmapple! It's the Catedral de Barcelona.]

I was in awe of the sheer verticality of the place, with these narrow winding roads between buildings that were constructed to match the angles of Barcelona's erratic grid structure. As well, the interesting mix of deciduous trees and tropical plants such as the palm tree pictured above made it seem entirely unique compared to other coastal cities I had seen in the USA.

Many of the trees were growing, seemingly miraculously, out of tiny openings of dirt — it feels that the citizens are careful to respect and honor these sentinels of a bygone era, though the materials of civilization continue encroaching upon their growth. The mix of the trees and buildings, each very tall, created a magical impression from above as I piloted my drone about the edge of the city near the water.

. . .

It was near impossible to fly much from within the city itself as all the stone buildings began quickly blocking the transmission of my remote control. I was also approached by multiple people insisting that what I was doing was illegal, and my Spanish was not sufficiently developed to comment that: for one, my drone is under 250g in weight, qualifying it for flight in practically all Europe, and second, that the software which runs DJI drones stores all the legal data such that it will not allow me to fly into areas which are strictly prohibited, such as near government buildings.

In any case, I was not going to let the language-barriered objections of any passers-by prevent me from capturing the beauty I had so long dreamed of beholding — I would save that honor for any law enforcement officers who would inform me if I was mistaken about the legality of such things! That, however, never in fact occurred — so I still am not sure what degree of truth the citizens' dire warnings possessed.

. . .

Forgive me though, I am rambling a bit, as all the images in this post were actually captured by iPhone 13. In my previous post, however, you can see some aerial shots near the Paral'lel skatepark, and in the next few days I'll share some stills from the Port Vell boat dock as well as the idyllic beach — whose waters were almost unrealistically pristine that day.

At the bottom of this post is the link to the video premiere of all that I filmed that day which will go live on Friday, November 4th at 8 pm central time. For now, the link contains a slideshow of stills of a few of the shots I got. I am sharing a larger amount of the stills here on HIVE exclusively, however!

Thank you for reading and I wish you a wonderful day or night wherever you are in the world!

The architecture over there is one-of-a-kind. It's interesting that you mention drone situation, I see that these days there are more restriction on drones and it's like unwritten law in some places? although where I live there are definitely more signs especially in famous sites about the no drone zone. I'd be on the lookout for that premiere on your youtube channel. BTW, just a reminder that if you want to share your travelogue, there's pinmapple community too, as you see it would be nice to post this to the more appropriate communities before OCD unless you feel it does not belong in any. Cheers and looking forward to more of your travel stories!

Hey @macchiata I appreciate the comment! I didn't know how to use Pinmapple but thanks to your comment I just found out how it works and will be putting my future travel posts there! Cheers :-)

Yes the architecture is stunning, it's really hard as an American to fathom the antiquity of many of them. Makes the cities so unique and you can feel how much history is there. Can't wait until the next time I get the chance to visit. I'm very interested in doing a backpacking trip across France, but I want to learn some of the language before doing that!
