WE'RE THINKING ABOUT TURKEYS THIS YEAR

in OCD4 years ago

Should we get some?

This is a turkey I met recently. I think her name was "Henny." She was a rather friendly turkey, and she got me thinking again about possibly getting some this year. Although we raised some eleven pound chickens, we have never tried raising turkeys yet, but they are on our to-do list. Have you ever raised turkeys? Do you think we should try raising some this year? Here's a few more photos of Henny. Let us know what you think!

We have raised them a bunch of times. The caution is that they are far more fragile than chickens when just hatched, especially the broad breasted white and bronze. The heritage birds are all much more hearty but all weigh out less at butcher time. We have let some bronze birds go for FAR too long and when we butchered them we had individual breasts come off the toms that were 10 pounds each. I find the feed to meat conversion on turkeys is very high.

I have never had a turkey, you should try to raise this chicken.
I like this chicken.

You framed a beautiful turkey.. After all, really amazing photographs.
