Capturing an awesome new renovation

New projects coming up!

The first photography project for Preston Palace this year is a fact. Mid-January I had a meeting with Preston Palace discussing the plans for 2020. It's nice to have a client like Preston Palace, and I'm damn proud of it.

Since the time that I've been working as a photographer for them they are constantly renewing. It is nice to be part of that, seeing the progress first-handed.

Right after the meeting I did some fieldwork on the spot and scanned the new interior to spot angles that would make great shots with my DSLR.

Gear

For this project I used the following gear:

  • Sony α7R II
  • Canon 17-40mm f/4.0 L-series
  • Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM
  • Canon EF Lens to Sony E Mount T Smart Adapter (Mark IV)
  • Jinbei EF-200 200Ws
  • Jinbei K-90 Octagonal Umbrella
  • Coman TM287CC1 Carbon Fiber Tripod with C1 Ballhead

Not much later after our meeting, we planned the first session that eventually took place a couple of weeks later. They have asked me if I could also make a press portrait for one of the CEO's, who is responsible for any construction that is going on amongst other matters. Gladly, I knew it would be a difficult task to take portraits without additional lighting and some extra time for setting it up.

Fieldwork, checking out angles. Quick phoneshot.

Planning

As for planning, because of the field-work I did earlier, it became much easier and less stressful for the employees and guests that made use of the hotel. There were a few time-related factors that needed to be respected, but that was mostly the only challenging thing of the day. Before taking the photographs, Preston Palace prepared the location where we were going to shoot.

Post-processing

With a fresh interior like this, post-processing and taking the photographs is half the work. Everything is clean and new. Even though it is fresh-from-the-press, Preston Palace holds about 300 guests at a minimum every single day. It is common to see signs of usage, which wasn't too hard to remove in post edit.

The only things I usually do when shooting Interior photography in post edit are removing spots and do some color correction. Getting the lighting right is all done on set.

Detail

I was also asked to photograph details of the interior. In my head, I was already planning on doing it, since it is something that I always do for clients that are very active on Social Media and make use of print.

The idea behind detail shots is that they hint back to the bigger picture, as they maintain the same look-and-feel of photographed subjects.
