I had to have a whole house air filtration system. It wasn't noticeable as long as I left it on. But if I ever turned it off you could smell mold within just a couple hours. After a day it was something inescapable any time you returned to the house, though I would get used to it mostly while being inside. I foggy place just smells like mold, it seems.
Perhaps - Maybe for us it is the moisture coming out of the soft ground. We are removing it and replacing it with better soil (and an angle for drainage) so hopefully it helps. I have always wanted an air filtration system, but in an old house I don't know if it is worth it.
