Globes, chocolate and music instruments.
Vienna has a diverse range of museums. In addition to the renowned classical and modern museums, whose collections have an international reputation, there are a number of smaller museums that specialize in particular topics. Some of them are insider tips, which offer deeper insights into the respective specialty for enthusiasts and interested people. With this article I start a small series in which I present some of these museums worth seeing. It should be noted that not all of them have already reopened after the corona-induced closure.
Globen, Schokolade und Musikinstrumente Die Museumslandschaft von Wien ist vielfältig. Neben den renommierten klassischen und modernen Häusern, deren Sammlungen Weltruf genießen, gibt es eine Reihe von kleineren Museen, die sich auf ein bestimmtes Themengebiet spezialisieren. Manche davon sind Geheimtipps, die Enthusiasten und Interessierten tiefere Einblicke in das jeweilige Spezialgebiet erlauben. Mit diesem Beitrag starte ich eine kleine Serie, in der ich einige dieser sehenswerten Spezialmuseen vorstelle. Zu beachten ist, dass noch nicht alle dieser Sammlungen nach der Corona-bedingten Schließung wieder geöffnet sind.
Globe MuseumIn the Globe Museum of the Austrian National Library visitors can expect an exciting journey through time and space. More than 250 exhibits are on display here, including earth and celestial globes, globes of the moon and other planets as well as numerous astronomical instruments.

In addition to the history of globes, the visitor also learns interesting facts about their production. A further thematic focus is the development of terrestrial and celestial globes, from antiquity to the 1970s.
Neben der Geschichte der Globen erfährt der Besucher auch Wissenswertes über deren Herstellung. Ein weiterer Themenschwerpunkt ist der Entwicklung von Erd- und Himmelsgloben, von der Antike bis in die 1970er Jahre, gewidmet.
The pair of globes comes from Vincenzo Coronelli, who was born in Venice in 1650. He was one of the most important cartographers and globe designers of his time.

In the Golden Cabinet, which is decorated with magnificent murals, instruments associated with globes are presented. Armillary spheres are astronomical instruments known since ancient times for determining the position of celestial bodies.
Im Goldkabinett, das mit prächtiger Wandmalerei verziert ist, werden globenverwandte Instrumente präsentiert. Armillarsphären sind seit der Antike bekannte astronomische Instrumente zur Bestimmung der Position von Himmelskörpern.
The Globe Museum of the Austrian National Library is located in the historical ambience of Palais Mollard (Herrengasse 9, 1010 Vienna).

If you have a sweet tooth like me, then I recommend a visit to the Chocolate Museum of the Confiserie Heindl in the south of Vienna. On a tour through the show rooms you will learn interesting facts about chocolate.
SchokoMuseumEin Paradies für Naschkatzen und Schokotiger ist das SchokoMuseum der Confiserie Heindl im Süden Wiens. Bei einem Rundgang durch die Ausstellungsräume erfährt man allerlei Wissenswertes rund um das Thema Schokolade.
The process from the cocoa bean to the finished chocolate product is shown on display boards and vividly documented by means of exhibits.
Der Weg von der Kakaobohne bis zum fertigen Schokoladenprodukt wird auf Schautafeln dargestellt und anhand von Exponaten anschaulich präsentiert.
Interesting is also the insight into the more than 50-year history of the family business and the exhibition of former working equipment.
Interessant ist auch der Einblick in die über 50-jährige Geschichte des Familienunternehmens sowie die Ausstellung von ehemaligen Arbeitsgeräten.
There are several stations where the sweet delicacies can be tasted. At the end of the tour, the visitor is given a brief insight into the company's production and packaging department. The Schokomuseum is located in the 23rd district, in Willendorfer Gasse 2-8.
An mehreren Stationen gibt es Kostproben der süßen Köstlichkeiten. Am Ende der Besichtigungstour erhält der Besucher noch einen kleinen Einblick in die Produktions- und Verpackungsabteilung des Unternehmens. Das Schokomuseum befindet sich im 23. Bezirk, in der Willendorfer Gasse 2–8.

A focal point of the collection are the historical fortepianos, whose strings are struck and made to sound by wooden hammers.The fortepiano shown here, dating from 1781, was owned by Emperor Joseph II and is said to have been played by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in front of a courtly audience.

The Viennese Piano Manufactory Bösendorfer presented this magnificent piano on the occasion of the 1867 World Exhibition. The design is committed to the historical contemporary style. The gilded caryatids are reminiscent of the Great Music Society Hall, which was built at the same time according to designs by Theophil Hansen.

The museum has the world's most important collection of instruments from the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

This nail violin dates from the 19th century. On this folk instrument, the metal pins are struck with a violin bow that has a wooden resonating body. The different length of the pins also results in different tone pitches.
Aus dem 19. Jahrhundert stammt diese Nagelgeige. Beim volkstümlichen Instrument werden die Metallstifte mit einem Violinbogen, der einen Resonanzkörper aus Holz besitzt, angestrichen. Durch die unterschiedliche Länge der Stifte ergeben sich auch unterschiedliche Tonhöhen.
The Collection of Historic Musical Instruments is housed in the Neue Burg on Heldenplatz on Heldenplatz in the historic center of the city.

The mural!
The large globe (one of the first pictured here), with the cartographer's impression of the wondrous sites that await adventurous explorers. That globe is trip back in time.
The Collection of Historic Musical Instruments. Reminds me of the movie The Red Violin. Craft and love in the creation of those instruments. Another trip back in time.
And of course, the pianos, and the harp.
There is so much. I'm happy you get to enjoy these riches. I think it must be impossible to live in Vienna and not develop an acute artistic sensibility.

I really appreciate to live in a city where history is omnipresent and where art has such a high value.
You mentioned all the objects that are also for me among the highlights of these museums. Regarding the Golden Cabinet: The Globe Museum is located in a in a palace-like building where noblemen used to live who could afford to decorate their living rooms in a particularly splendid way. The Golden Cabinet dates back to 1700. The murals were made with the Secco technique, in which oil-gold paint was applied to the dry masonry. On the walls and ceiling figures from Greek mythology are to be seen. Here's another photo:
I just watched a trailer of "The Red Violin" which has obviously a reference to Vienna. In this section of the movie the orphan boy Kaspar Weiss shows his great talent on the violin. I read that the boys name "Kaspar" is probably a reference to the film "The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser" (1974) by Werner Herzog. Maybe you know these movie or the real story of foundling Kaspar Hauser.

I'm amazed that people can ever claimed to be bored, when, if we just open our eyes and ears, there is so much of interest in the world :)
I checked out Kasper Hauser, who is new to me. Engima, indeed. Another Werner Herzog film I will surely have to dig up and watch. Fascinating, again.

Beautiful museum with so many interesting pieces to enjoy, learn about how our forefathers navigated the skies, seas putting life into perspective.
Old musical instruments always a reminder of grand days spent being entertained in halls where the music would linger, really a treasure trove in history here.

Das Schokomuseum in Wien würde ich auch gerne mal besuchen. Dann hätte ich einen guten Vergleich zu dem in Hamburg. Da war ich mit Sohnemann vor 2 Jahren. Leider keine Fotos gemacht sonst könnte ich da noch einen Blog raus machen.

Da können wir gerne mal tauschen. ;-) Mich würde das Chocomuseum in Hamburg interessieren. Ist vermutlich um einiges größer und professioneller aufgezogen als das Schokomuseum in Wien.

Kann ich so nicht beurteilen, weil ich den Vergleich ja nicht habe. Meiner Erinnerung ist aber schon dass es recht klein und familiär aufgezogen ist. Und dadurch auch echt richtig schön. Wir durften unsere eigene Schokolade herstellen das war schon gut gemacht.

Wow! This is a beautiful museum! The globe's designs are priceless! I also love the musical instrument collection, especially the harp! I would love to learn how to play that. In my dreams. Le sigh. 😉

They are actually three separate museums. But each one is worth a visit.
The harp is an absolute highlight. It's amazing that the design of the harp hasn't changed over the last two hundred years, as you can see on the photo in stayoutoftherz's commentary.

Schokoladenmuseeum mmmhm, wenn man da mit dem kosten durch ist hat man am nächsten Tag ein Kilo mehr auf den rippen:-)
Man muss schon sehr aufpassen, dass man nicht bei jeder süßen Versuchung zugreift, die angeboten wird. Die Schokobrunnen sind jedenfalls immer gut besucht.
