I'm trying to improve also. I notice that if the original shot is rather large and the background is contrasted, the image works betters. Also the resolution--has to be clear. Sometimes I take a shot and think it's great and then when I try to put it up the picture gets blurry. We are all learning (those of us who are not photographers).

@quantumg offered some metrics that we can use to judge whether our photos are 'good' quality or not. I have referred to these standards when making my own images. Here is the comment in which he describes the metrics.
