Afternoon in Caracas -18K / Tarde en Caracas 18K

My usual weekly bike ride took an unexpected turn when I decided to vary my route on the way back, adding about 5 extra kilometers that allowed me to make a brief visit to a friend and explore other parts of the city.

Mi habitual recorrido semanal en bicicleta tomó un giro inesperado cuando decidí hacer una variación en la ruta de regreso, agregando unos 5 kilómetros extras que me permitieron ir a hacer una breve visita a un amigo y transitar otras rutas de la ciudad.

The route mostly runs through quiet, low-traffic streets, including a 2-kilometer segment on a bike lane, until I reached the Boulevard de Sabana Grande, that iconic pedestrian corridor in Caracas where informal commerce and the constant flow of passersby create its unique atmosphere.

El trayecto discurre mayormente por calles solitarias, de bajo tránsito, incluyendo un segmento de 2 kilómetros por ciclovía, hasta desembocar en el Boulevard de Sabana Grande, su atmósfera particular.

This time, I tried out the Strava app, which is so popular among cyclists and outdoor athletes. I was surprised by the accuracy of its GPS for mapping routes and tracking distances. Although for now I’m sticking with the free version, I don’t rule out upgrading to the premium version in the future.

Esta vez, estrené la aplicación Strava, tan popular entre ciclistas y deportistas outdoor. Me sorprendió la precisión de su GPS para trazar rutas y contabilizar distancias. Aunque por ahora me conformo con la versión gratuita, no descarto actualizar a la versión premium en un futuro.

After a brief pause at my friend's house, I started my return when the clock was nearing 6 PM. At this time of year, dusk arrives early, forcing me to quicken my pace. However, my efforts were in vain when I discovered that the park I usually pass through was closed.

Tras una breve pausa en casa de mi amigo, emprendí el retorno cuando el reloj marcaba cerca de las 6 de la tarde. En esta época del año, el crepúsculo llega temprano, lo que me obligó a acelerar el paso. Sin embargo, mis esfuerzos fueron en vano cuando descubrí que el parque que habitualmente atravieso estaba cerrado.

I had to force myself to find an alternative route through nearby areas. The total distance amounted to about 18 kilometers—7 in the first segment and 11 in the second—a considerable effort that I felt upon arriving home.

Forzándome a buscar una ruta alternativa por zonas aledañas. El recorrido total sumó unos 18 kilómetros - 7 en el primer tramo y 11 en el segundo - un esfuerzo considerable que sentí al llegar a casa.

This experience made me reflect on the challenges of biking at night, especially in a city like Caracas. While some experienced cyclists venture out even in the early morning, I personally prefer to stay in areas with bike lanes during the day.

Esta experiencia me hizo pensar sobre los desafíos de circular en bicicleta durante la noche, especialmente en una ciudad como Caracas. Si bien algunos ciclistas experimentados se aventuran incluso en la madrugada, personalmente prefiero mantenerme en zonas con ciclovías y durante el día.

Nighttime safety requires essential basic equipment, such as flashing lights, reflectors, and other items that enhance visibility. My modest "cat eye" light is insufficient for these circumstances, a shortcoming that I definitely need to address for future evening rides.

La seguridad nocturna requiere implementos básicos esenciales,como luces intermitentes, reflectores y otros elementos que aumenten la visibilidad. Mi modesto "ojo de gato" resulta insuficiente para estas circunstancias, una carencia que definitivamente necesito solucionar para futuros paseos vespertinos.
