Freedive Malapascua | Coral Garden - An Underwater Delight!

Malapascua Island is truly one of Cebu's must-visit tourist destinations! I never really bothered to include this place on my bucket list before since I thought the island only showcases white beaches. Yes, I was aware dive sites was present but I thought only the scuba divers would get to enjoy the thresher sharks and manta rays this island has to offer.

After our brief escapade in Malapascua last February, I was proven wrong for such assumptions. Even mere snorkelers or freedivers can feast on the beautiful corals and marine life surrounding this small island. One particular spot where one can easily view the paradise beneath the waves is the marine sanctuary they call CORAL GARDEN.

Situated a few kilometers from the eastern shore of Malapascua lies the Coral Garden where the seafloor is covered in rich and beautiful corals, different types of fishes, and other marine life. This sea bed of corals stretches a few kilometers to the north and south. One wouldn't be satisfied with just a 15-minute dip into this part of the island. And so it took I and @ybanezkim26 more than an hour to explore the vastness of this underwater paradise.

During our boat trip to Coral Garden, we were blessed with calm, clear water, clear skies, and sunny weather! Since we arrive here around 7:30 am, the tide was still low and the corals were only about 5 meters below the water surface so we were able to observe and admire the marine life up close. The corals themselves were not as big as we were used to in Moalboal but we were still in awe of its vastness and unique beauty.

Coral Garden was just the perfect diving spot to end our freediving excursion on Malapascua Island! And I promise you, you won't regret visiting this beautiful island if ever you find your way to the Philippines!

Here are other diving spots we visited in Malapascua:

  1. Japanese Shipwreck
  2. Lapus-Lapus Island
  3. Twin Islet
