     Dear and respected readers of the communities that make up HIVE. Today it is my pleasure to present to you a beautiful church dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, patron saint of México, built in the second half of the 20th century in the city of Caracas through the efforts of a Mexican citizen and the generous contribution of the Catholics of the surrounding urbanizations to the land where the temple was built. The photos are all entirely my responsibility, with one exception that can be seen immediately upon viewing it; I have documented myself, see the material consulted at the end of the text, to carry out the writing that accompanies this post. I sincerely hope your comments and criticisms will allow me to improve what I present to you on a regular basis.

     In Las Mercedes Urbanization, strategically located at the intersection of 5 streets, is the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe church, although its official address is Calle La Cinta with Carretera Vieja de Baruta. Parish of Our Lady of the Rosary of Baruta. Capital District, Baruta Municipality. Caracas. This church is representative of the modern Caracas Mission Style neocolonial architecture of the 1950s.

     Its history dates back to 1948 when the friars of the Augustinian Recollect Order received a donation of 5,000 square meters of land for the construction of a church and parish house. The parish house was built first and at the end of 1951, the church was completed. The donation was made by the Mexican builder Gustavo San Román, who at the time was one of the most important owners-shareholders of the Las Mercedes urbanization, with the condition that it be placed under the patronage of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patron saint of Mexico.

     The church was built in a simple Romanesque style, with a single nave with a transept, with a length of 31 meters long and 14 meters wide, it is quite wide and its ceiling is very high. The altarpiece is made up of a large oil painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which was brought from Mexico. In 1959 they hired the Spanish sculptor Martínez Abelenda to carry out various works in polychrome alabaster: an altar to Saint Joseph, another in honor of Saint Augustine, and a communion rail, all financed with donations from the parishioners.

     The church is adorned inside by beautiful stained-glass windows with themes alluding to the apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe to the indigenous Juan Diego in Mexico. At the back of the church, there is an artistic stained-glass window with the image of Saint Augustine at the top. Once inside the temple, you can breathe an air of peace and recollection, conducive to reflection, prayer, and liturgy. The parish provides pastoral service to some 34,000 faithfuls from its surroundings.

     The temple has been declared "Well of Cultural Interest of the Nation" in 2005 and registered as one of the tangible manifestations registered in the I Census of Venezuelan Cultural Heritage 2004-2005. Inside this magnificent temple, you can appreciate the Caracas art of the 50s, with works that have been declared heritage by "Fundapatrimonio".

     Apreciados y respetados lectores de las comunidades que conforman HIVE. Me toca hoy presentarles una bella iglesia dedicada a la Virgen de Guadalupe, patrona de México, construida en la segunda mitad del siglo XX en la ciudad de Caracas por el esfuerzo de un ciudadano mexicano y la generosa contribución de los católicos de las urbanizaciones circunvecinas al terreno donde fue levantado el templo. Las fotos son todas de mi entera responsabilidad, con una sola excepción que se puede apreciar inmediatamente al verla; me he documentado, véase material consultado al final del post, para realizar el escrito que acompaña este post. Espero sinceramente sus comentarios y críticas que me permitan mejorar lo que les presento con cierta regularidad.

     En la Urbanización las Mercedes, estratégicamente ubicada en la intersección de 5 calles se encuentra la iglesia Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, aunque su dirección oficial es Calle La Cinta con Carretera Vieja de Baruta. Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Baruta. Distrito Capital, Municipio Baruta. Caracas. Esta iglesia es representativa de la arquitectura moderna neocolonial Mission Style caraqueña de los años 50.

     Su historia se remonta a 1948 cuando los frailes de la Orden Agustinos Recoletos recibieron en donación un terreno de 5000 metros cuadrados para la construcción de una iglesia y casa parroquial. Primero se construyó la casa parroquial y a finales de 1951 fue terminada la iglesia. La donación fue realizada por el constructor mexicano Gustavo San Román, quien a la postre era unos de los propietarios-accionistas más importantes de la urbanización las Mercedes, con la condición que se pusiera bajo la advocación de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, patrona de México.

     La iglesia fue construida en un estilo románico sencillo, con una sola nave con crucero, con una longitud de 31 metros de largo y 14 de ancho, es bastante amplia y su techo es muy alto. El retablo está conformado por un gran cuadro al óleo de la Virgen de Guadalupe, el cual fue traído desde México. En 1959 contrataron al escultor español Martínez Abelenda para que realizara varios trabajos en alabastro policromado: un altar a San José, otro en honor de San Agustín y una baranda comulgatorio, todo costeado con donativos de los feligreses.

     El templo está adornado en su interior por bellos vitrales con temas alusivos a la aparición de la Virgen de Guadalupe al indígena Juan Diego en México. Al fondo de la iglesia se encuentra una artística vidriera con la imagen de San Agustín en su parte superior. Una vez dentro del templo se respira un aire de paz y recogimiento, propicios para la reflexión, la oración y la liturgia. La parroquia presta servicio pastoral a unos 34 mil fieles de sus alrededores.

     El templo ha sido declarado “Bien de Interés Cultural de la Nación” en 2005 y censado como una de las manifestaciones tangibles registradas en el I Censo del Patrimonio Cultural Venezolano 2004-2005. En el interior de este magnífico templo se puede apreciar el arte caraqueño de los 50, con obras que han sido declaradas patrimoniales por “Fundapatrimonio”.
