LA BASÍLICA DE SAN PEDRO

One of the aspects that make an architectural work interesting is its capacity to transmit history, to reveal social and cultural aspects of the time in which it was conceived. In the case of St. Peter's Basilica there is so much history behind its construction and its aftermath that hundreds of books could be written, but just understanding that we are talking about the largest Christian church in the world and that it is located in the smallest city in the world, undoubtedly marks a milestone of universal proportions. I was remarkably impressed that its formal construction lasted 120 years (1506-1626) and involved the greatest architects and artists of more than a century, among them, one of my favorites, the great Michelangelo Buonarroti and Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

Uno de los aspectos que hacen interesante una obra arquitectónica es su capacidad de transmitir historia, de develar aspectos sociales y culturales de la época en que fue concebida. En el caso de la Basílica de San Pedro hay tanta historia detrás de su construcción y posterior a ella que se pueden escribir centenares de libros, pero sólo comprender que estamos hablando de la iglesia Cristiana más grande del mundo y que a su vez está ubicada en la ciudad más pequeña del mundo, sin duda alguna marca un hito de proporciones universales. Me impresionó notablemente que su construcción formal duró 120 años (1506-1626) y en él intervinieron los más grandes arquitectos y artistas de más de una centuria, entre ellos, uno de mis favoritos, el gran Miguel Ángel Buonarroti y Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

As I told you in the previous post, ten years ago I visited Rome with my wife and seeing the Vatican City was one of our longings. I took the pictures above and below from the tourist bus as we walked along Via Della Conciliazione.

Como les comenté en el post anterior, hace diez años visité Roma junto a mi esposa y conocer la Ciudad del Vaticano era uno de nuestros anhelos. Tomé las fotos de arriba y abajo desde el bus turístico mientras recorríamos la Via della Conciliazione.

ARTISTIC MOVEMENT

RENAISSANCE & BAROQUE

In order to access the inside of the basilica, you must first go through St. Peter's Square and stand in line. Fortunately, the day we went there were not many people so we decided to walk around the square and take some pictures. Once the opening of the basilica began, we approached the respective line to enter and during those minutes I admired the facade of the church that represents the Catholic religion. I understand that the double-story columns, as well as the design of the great dome, were the idea of Michelangelo Buonarroti, painter, sculptor, and architect with a strong Renaissance influence, and although these ideas were accepted by the final construction, many others were discarded.

Es común que mucha gente visite diariamente esta obra maestra de la arquitectura renacentista y barroca, pero felizmente el día que fuimos no había mucha gente así que decidimos pasear por la plaza y tomar algunas fotos. Una vez se dio inicio a la apertura de la basílica nos acercamos a la fila respectiva para entrar y durante esos minutos admiré la fachada de la Iglesia que representa a la religión católica. Tengo entendido que las columnas de doble planta así como el diseño de la gran cúpula fueron idea de Miguel Ángel Buonarroti, pintor, escultor y arquitecto con influencia marcadamente renacentista y, aunque estas ideas fueron acogidas por la construcción final, muchas otras fueron desestimadas.

Monumental, majestic, and full of character.
If in the XXI century we are still surprised by this magnificent work, perhaps we can get to glimpse just a little of what it could mean for the parishioners and for the world in general during the XVI - XVII - XVIII, and XIX centuries.

If you click on the image above you will notice that the facade of the basilica is colossal. Each of the eight columns is almost 28 meters high. Three of the five doors reach a height of almost seven meters. The capitals, cornices, windows, doors, balconies are overloaded with engravings and designs typical of the baroque style. Even the letters of the Latin inscription are two meters high. At the top are the sculptures of eleven of the apostles except for St. Peter. Jesus Christ is in the center with the cross and on his right side is John the Baptist. If you look closely at the proportion of each sculpture to the size of the people you can easily notice that these statues are almost six meters tall.


Monumental, majestuosa y llena de carácter.
Si en pleno siglo XXI aún nos sorprende esta magnífica obra, quizás podamos llegar a atisbar apenas un poquito de lo que pudo significar para los feligreses y para el mundo en general durante los siglos XVI - XVII - XVIII y XIX.

Si hacen click en la imagen de arriba podrán notar que la fachada de la basílica es colosal. Cada una de las ocho columnas mide casi 28 metros de altura. Tres de las cinco puertas alcanza una altura de casi siete metros. Los capiteles, las cornisas, ventanas, puertas, balcones están sobrecargados de grabados y diseños propios del estilo barroco. Incluso las letras de la inscripción en latín miden dos metros de altura. En la parte superior están las esculturas de once de los apóstoles menos la de San Pedro. Jesucristo está en el centro con la cruz y a su lado derecho está Juan el Bautista. Si observan detenidamente la proporción de cada escultura con el tamaño de las personas podrán notar fácilmente que estas estatuas miden casi seis metros de alto.

As this work lasted so long and passed from hand to hand, there were many obstacles and events that were modifying its initial design and so it went from one artistic movement or style to another. Finally, it was Gian Lorenzo Bernini who was able to complete the construction of the church, and precisely because of his predominantly baroque style, the construction of the square and much of the interior decoration of the basilica follow this artistic and architectural trend. Bernini had great merit because he had to overcome innumerable problems, not only religious but also political, cultural, and economic, in order to complete the work.

Como esta obra duró tanto tiempo y pasó de mano en mano, hubo muchas trabas y eventos que fueron modificando su diseño inicial y así fue como se pasó de un movimiento o estilo artístico a otro. Finalmente, fue Gian Lorenzo Bernini el que pudo completar la construcción de la iglesia y debido precisamente a su estilo predominantemente barroco la construcción de la plaza y gran parte del decorado interior de la basílica siguen esta corriente artística y arquitectónica. Bernini tuvo un gran mérito porque tuvo que sortear innumerables problemas, no sólo de orden religioso, sino también político, cultural y económico para lograr culminar la obra.

Even from where we were standing in St. Peter's Square, we could not imagine the immense work that St. Peter's Basilica has meant. It looks like a building created by and for giants. I have not been anywhere else that has made me feel as I have in this place. It may seem obvious that the idea of this holy place was all of a grandiose and majestic aspect, as a work that worships God should be. Giant columns, giant sculptures, and, of course, the entrance should be for a giant. Passing through one of its five gates of more than seven meters high makes you feel very, very small. It is as if you were really entering the house of God. When you get inside you understand how majestic this work is. One thing that has become clear to me is that every inch of this magnificent building was thought out and rethought, nothing was left to chance. Many of its final details such as sculptures, paintings, and various works of art have been added since it was formally completed in 1626 even to this day. That is, for more than 400 years.


Incluso desde el punto donde nos encontrábamos en la Plaza de San Pedro, no nos imaginábamos la inmensa obra que ha significado la Basílica de San Pedro. Parece un edificio creado por y para gigantes. No he estado en ningún otro lugar que me haya hecho sentir como en este sitio. Puede parecer evidente que la idea de este santo lugar fuera todo de un aspecto grandioso y majestuoso, como lo debería ser una obra que venere a Dios. Columnas gigantes, esculturas gigantes y ,por supuesto, la entrada debería ser para un gigante. Pasar por una de sus cinco puertas de más de siete metros de altura te hacen sentir muy, pero muy pequeñito. Es como si estuvieras entrando realmente a la casa de Dios. Cuando logras estar dentro entiendes lo majestuoso de esta obra. Algo que me ha quedado claro es que cada centímetro de este magnífico edificio fue pensado y repensado, nada fue dejado al azar. Muchos de sus detalles finales como esculturas, cuadros y diversas obras de arte han sido añadidas desde que se culminó formalmente en 1626 incluso hasta nuestros días. Es decir, por más de 400 años.

THE HOUSE OF GOD

INSIDE THE BASILICA

As I walked in I couldn't stop looking up. I remember at some point I had to lower my head because it was already starting to hurt from the position. It's incredibly high! The vaulted ceilings with paintings, patterns, designs, and sculptures impressed me. The golden color stands out and imposes a deified and glorious connotation.

Al entrar no podía dejar de ver hacia arriba. Recuerdo que en algún momento tuve que bajar la cabeza porque ya me comenzaba a doler por la posición. ¡Es increíblemente alto! Los techos de forma abovedada con pinturas, patrones, diseños y esculturas me impresionaron. El color dorado destaca e impone una connotación endiosada y gloriosa.

The walls and columns as well as the ceiling are completely covered with different materials, mainly marble, cement, and endless mosaics, but also boast countless sculptures and carvings of great artistic importance. Lintels, cornices, porticos, and bases adorn the entire stage in spectacular fashion. The statues or sculptures are impossible to count because in each small space you can see another one. I found the size of each pillar supporting the great dome to be of colossal proportions. Just imagine that at the base of each one of them there is a sculpture more than three meters high.

Las paredes y columnas al igual que el techo están completamente revestidos con distintos materiales, principalmente el mármol, el cemento y mosaicos interminables, pero también ostentan infinidad de esculturas y tallados de suma importancia artística. Los dinteles, cornisas, pórticos y bases adornan de manera espectacular todo el escenario. Las estatuas o esculturas son imposible de contar porque en cada pequeño espacio puedes ver otro más. Me pareció de proporciones colosales el tamaño de cada pilar que sostiene la gran cúpula. Sólo imaginen que en la base de cada una de ellas hay una escultura de más de tres metros de altura.

In the Girola, the central space of the basilica where the four pillars are located, there are several sculptures and monuments of veneration. The above photo of the funerary monument of Pope Pius VII (Bertel Thorvaldsen - 1831) and on the right is the monument to Pius VIII (Pietro Tenerani - 1866).

Saint Longinus is one of the statues located at the base of one of the four pillars that support the great dome. See the harmony of the design. The one-color statue has been framed by marble panels of various colors and geometric shapes that make it stand out and make it even more sublime.

San Longinos es una de las estatuas que está ubicada en la base de uno de los cuatro pilares que soportan la gran cúpula. Vean la armonía del diseño. THE PAPAL ALTAR

Inside the building, there are three large areas called naves. The main or central nave extends through a barrel vault that ends in the great dome and under which is the papal altar. Before accessing this point we come across the Baldachin of St. Peter, a work by Bernini in a clearly baroque style. I think many of you will also remember it. Below this site is where the remains of St. Peter and the tombs of most of the popes are located.

Dentro del edificio existen tres grandes áreas llamadas naves. La principal o central se extiende a través de una bóveda de cañón que finaliza en la gran cúpula y bajo la cual está el altar papal. Antes de acceder a este punto nos encontramos con el Baldaquino de San Pedro, una obra de Bernini de estilo claramente barroco. Creo que muchos de ustedes también la recordarán. Debajo de este sitio es donde se encuentran los restos de San Pedro y las tumbas de la mayoría de los papás.

The wrought columns carved in solid and gilded bronze of Bernini's baldachin complete an incredibly beautiful work. This 30 m high work was the result of at least nine years of work (1624-1633).

Las columnas entorchadas forjadas y labradas en bronce maciso y sobredorado del baldaquino de Bernini completan una estructura increíblemente hermosa. Esta obra de 30 m de altura fue el resultado de al menos nueve años de trabajo (1624-1633).

Close up to the top of the canopy. Beautiful sculpting work is seen in the final texture and finish. Every fold, every little element was finely treated.

We were unlucky that day because several sites were limited for public access due to restoration work in both the right and left aisles. So La Pietà, one of Michelangelo's famed sculptures was out of my reach to admire and photograph. However, I did manage to take these images of one of the two minor domes. In a spectacular artistic treatment, it looks like you are looking at a painting with a circular frame, but the merit lies in the ability to capture an image of almost 360 degrees and topped with a stained glass window in the center that lets in natural light.


Ese día tuvimos mala suerte porque varios sitios estaban limitados para el acceso al público debido a trabajos de restauración tanto en la nave de la derecha como en el de la izquierda. De modo que La Piedad, una de las afamadas esculturas de Miguel Ángel estuvo fuera de mi alcance para admirar y fotografiar. Sin embargo, sí pude tomar estas imágenes de una de las dos cúpulas menores. En un espectacular tratamiento artístico, parece que se estuviera viendo una pintura con marco circular, pero el mérito se sustenta en la capacidad de plasmar una imagen de casi 360 grados y rematada con un vitral en el centro que deja entrar la luz natural.

THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD

THE GREAT DOME

If the vaulted ceiling of the church is already extremely high, imagine being under the great dome. The internal diameter is 41.47 m and it is divided into 16 parts with an equal number of windows. In these divisions, Michelangelo created beautiful paintings. If I remember correctly the paintings are of Jesus Christ, the twelve apostles, John the Baptist, Mary Magdalene, and the Virgin Mary.

The circular opening seen in the center of the dome that allows light to enter is called a lantern. It is the highest area of the basilica that can be visited by tourists. It can be reached in two ways, by elevator or by stairs. Unfortunately, we could not go up there due to restrictions our government had imposed on the use of our credit cards.

If the vaulted ceiling of the church is already extremely high, imagine being under the great dome. A round structure with such a dimension is unbelievable. The internal diameter is 41.47 m and is divided into 16 parts with an equal number of windows. In these divisions, mosaics were created representing the saints and their level of importance to each other and in the middle is God.

La abertura circular que se ve en el centro de la cúpula que permite la entrada de luz es lo que se llama linterna. Es el área más alta de la basílica que puede ser visitada por los turistas. Se llega de dos formas, por ascensor o por escaleras. Lamentablemente no pudimos subir hasta allí debido a restricciones que nuestro gobierno había impuesto sobre el uso de nuestras tarjetas de crédito.

Each of the letters that make up the Latin inscriptions, located along the entire length of the walls, like those shown in the image above and below, measure two meters in height.

The presbytery is located at the back of the church. With a majestic design, much more sumptuous than that of the great dome with exquisite gold carvings both on the dome and in the scene that surrounds a circular stained glass window in the center with the image of a dove.

LIGHTING

CELESTIAL LIGHT

One would think that a site like this would require a very important source of artificial lighting and although there is indeed a whole range of lamps and lights, they are strategically placed to fill with light those places that require greater visibility and to maintain the visual harmony of the place. However, when we reached the great dome and the Papal altar, the light was present. Natural lighting takes over the space through the large windows and stained glass in an almost spiritual way. The ethereal sensation touches you and transports you to another realm for good. It is truly beautiful. I think everyone who has visited this place has been affected in some way. It is impossible to remain oblivious to such a display of glory and grandeur referring, of course, to the kingdom of heaven.

ILUMINACIÓN

LUZ CELESTIAL

Se podría pensar que un sitio como este se requiere de una fuente de iluminación artificial bien importante y aunque en efecto hay toda una gama de lámparas y luces, éstas están colocadas estratégicamente para llenar de luz aquellos sitios que requieren mayor visibilidad y para mantener la armonía visual del lugar. Sin embargo, al llegar a la gran cúpula y al altar Papal la luz se hizo presente. La iluminación natural se adueña del espacio a través de los grandes ventanales y vitrales de forma casi espiritual. La sensación etérea te toca y te transporta a otro reino definitivamente. Es realmente hermoso. Creo que todo aquel que ha visitado este lugar ha sido afectado de alguna forma. Es imposible quedar ajeno a tanta demostración de gloria y grandeza refiriéndonos, por supuesto, al reino de los cielos.

It is extraordinarily important because it shows us the possibilities that human beings have always had to achieve excellence in all senses.
