Hello dear friends of architecture and design, I am happy to greet you and share with you again. A few days ago I was walking with my son in the Historic Center of the City of Merida and I was surprised to discover a new face of the city.
It turns out that, at the moment, a project is being carried out to restore the facades of some buildings that are of great relevance, not only from an architectural point of view, but also from a historical one. The first building I came across was the Artema Shopping Center and it is amazing how after a long time, passing through its corridors and even working for a while in its facilities, I appreciated the beauty of its facade.
Hola queridos amigos de arquitectura y diseño, estoy feliz de saludarlos y compartir con ustedes nuevamente. Hace algunos días estuve de paseo con mi hijo en el Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de Mérida y me sorprendí al descubrir una nueva cara de la ciudad.
Resulta que, actualmente, se está llevando a cabo un proyecto de restauración de fachadas de algunas edificaciones que son de gran relevancia, no solo desde el punto de vista arquitectónico sino histórico. La primera edificación que me encontré fue el Centro Comercial Artema y es increíble como después de mucho tiempo, pasando por sus pasillos e incluso trabajando por un tiempo en sus instalaciones, aprecié la belleza de su fachada.
A beauty that was being overshadowed by humidity, dust and dirt stains, the siding peeling off its walls, screaming for maintenance, to be admired as it deserves. The image on the left, I took it in 2023. I don't have photos of its facade from that time, but in this image we can see the deterioration it was in. Compared to the new image it has today, it is inevitable not to be happy with this restoration.
The Centro Comercial Artema is located on Av. 3, a few meters from Plaza Bolivar, behind the government palace, this mall occupies an entire block, and in it we find stores like the castle a major textile franchise in the country, a small restaurant, clothing and accessories stores, children's hairdresser, spa, dentistry clinic and some medical offices. In addition, in its long corridor, we always find people of the informal economy, offering their ventures.
Una belleza que estaba siendo opacada por la humedad, las manchas de polvo y sucio, el revestimiento desprendiéndose de sus paredes, gritando mantenimiento, para ser admirada como merece. La imagen de la izquierda, la tomé en el 2023. No tengo fotos de ese momento de su fachada, pero en esta imagen podemos ver el deterioro en que se encontraba. Comparado con la nueva imagen que tiene actualmente, es inevitable no estar feliz con esta restauración.
El Centro Comercial Artema está ubicado en la Av. 3, a escasos metros de la Plaza Bolívar, detrás del palacio del gobierno, este centro comercial ocupa toda una cuadra, y en él encontramos tiendas como el castillo una franquicia textil importante en el país, un pequeño restaurante, tiendas de ropa y accesorios, peluquería infantil, spa, clínica odontología y algunos consultorios médicos. Además, en su largo pasillo, siempre encontramos personas de la economía informal, ofreciendo sus emprendimientos.
A beautiful facade.
Una hermosa fachada.
A gallery of arches, adorns the main facade of the mall. I love the arches and all the details found in them. They chose a color combination that never fails. The white and yellow, together with the gray lines, achieve a harmonious contrast.
The facade consists of three sections: the main one, where we find the identification of the shopping center in silver letters and beautiful wrought iron balconies with decorative details. Some doors are made of wood and others of wood and glass. Each balcony is framed with decorative brick clad columns intertwined by an arch. I love the details of the cornices and how each line was painted in great detail. This is my favorite area of the facade.
Una galería de arcos, engalana la fachada principal del centro comercial. Me encantan los arcos y todos los detalles que encontramos en ellas. Eligieron una combinación de colores que nunca falla. El blanco, y el amarillo, en compañía de las líneas grises, logran un contraste armónico.
La fachada consta de tres tramos: el principal, donde se encuentra la identificación del centro comercial en letras plateadas y hermosos balcones, en hierro forjado, con detalles decorativos. Algunas puertas son de madera y otras de madera y vidrio. Cada balcón está enmarcado con columnas decorativas revestidas en ladrillo entrelazadas por un arco. Adoro los detalles de las cornisas y cómo cada línea fue pintada con gran detalle. Esta es mi área favorita de la fachada.
In the second section, we have a large space with a single level and a beautiful cornice with details in the form of ovals.
En el segundo tramo, tenemos un amplio espacio de un solo nivel y una cornisa hermosa con detalles en forma de óvalos.
In the third section, we see that the cornices culminate with curved details and in the second level, the facade resembles a small tower of a castle, I imagine, referring to the store that bears that name and is right there.
En el tercer tramo, vemos que las cornisas culminan con detalles curvos y en el segundo nivel, la fachada se semeja a una pequeña torre de un castillo, me imagino, que haciendo referencia a la tienda que lleva ese nombre y queda justo ahí.
These three sections are connected by a long corridor, with a floor covered in caico, but at the time of the photograph, part of the floor was still unfinished.
Estos tres tramos unidos por un largo pasillo, con un piso revestido en caico, para el momento de la fotografía, aún faltaba culminar parte del piso.
The Interior Design of the Shopping Center
El Diseño Interior del Centro Comercial
Upon entering you may, perhaps, be a little disappointed, because the interior is lacking a lot to do. The main hallway is not very striking, they could improve it by adding some decorations or elements that enhance this hallway. However, it is quite comfortable to walk through, its spaces and we found several interesting things.
Al entrar puedes, tal vez, decepcionarte un poco, porque en el interior falta mucho por hacer. El pasillo principal no es muy llamativo, podrían mejorarlo agregando algunas decoraciones o elementos que realcen este pasillo. Sin embargo, es bastante cómodo recorrer, sus espacios y encontramos varias cosas interesantes.
One of the things that caught my attention is that from the facade, we only appreciate two levels, but when we enter we realize that it has 04 floors, yes, the height between the mezzanine slabs is low. The floor is granite, and the interior has many wooden details that I really liked and that I think look very good. A wood lattice, serves as the ceiling in each mezzanine. The columns are covered in wood and the railings of the stairs and hallways are also made of this material.
Una de las cosas que me llamó la atención es que desde la fachada, solo apreciamos dos niveles, pero al entrar nos damos cuenta de que tiene 04 pisos, eso sí, la altura entre las losas de entrepisos es baja. El piso es de granito, y el interior tiene muchos detalles en madera que me gustaron mucho y que creo que se ven muy bien. Un entramado de madera, sirve de cielo raso en cada entrepiso. Las columnas están revestidas en madera y las barandas de las escaleras y de los pasillos también son de este material.
In some areas, we noticed that it is time to replace much of this coating.
En algunas áreas notamos, que ya es hora de sustituir gran parte de este revestimiento.
My favorite part of the mall's interior is the stair core, spacious, comfortable, and the curved design on its landings, I think it's just right, because it looks amazing.
Mi parte favorita del interior del centro comercial es el núcleo de escaleras, amplio, cómodo, y el diseño curvo en sus descansos, me parece acertado, porque se ve increíble.
The mall has some areas that are a bit dark, but much of it gets good lighting thanks to the skylight, which lets in the sun's rays. A metal lattice, with a simple design, but it works very well.
El centro comercial tiene algunas zonas un poco oscuras, pero gran parte de él recibe una buena iluminación gracias a la claraboya, que permite dar paso a los rayos del sol. Un reticulado de metal, con un diseño sencillo, pero funciona muy bien.
This restoration left me very happy, especially because of the location, surrounded by several historic buildings.
I enjoyed walking around the mall with my son, taking pictures. I love going out with him, because he is as curious as I am and we like to appreciate every detail. I say goodbye with some pictures of him so you can appreciate a little of what we can find in this mall, which I invite you to visit.

I really liked having that restoration done, even though it is missing a few things, it looks like most of the work is done.
