Hello Beautiful People 😉 in this post I'm going to show you an activity from the History of Technology class of my studies of Architecture.

El propósito de esta materia era profundizar en la historia de los distintos materiales que existen. Fue mas que todo teórica. Pero al finalizar el semestre la arquitecto de la materia nos solicitó una muestra de cómo emplear nuevas tecnologías o nuevas formas de presentar un material. Nos exigió creatividad e innovación.
En las semanas anteriores a la fecha en la cual debíamos entregar el proyecto estábamos muy ocupados con el taller de diseño, por lo que en el día que debíamos decir a la arquitecto cual material íbamos a utilizar no estábamos preparados. En ese momento recordé que mi mamá me había llevado 2 láminas de cartón de 2 metros de altura y 1 metro de ancho. Pensé que era suficiente material para hacer algo interesante para la presentación.

📝 So... what is it about?

The purpose of this subject was to deepen in the history of the different materials that exist. It was mostly theoric. But at the end of the semester the architect of the subject requested us a sample of how to use new technologies or new ways of presenting a material. She demanded creativity and innovation.
In the weeks prior to the date on which we had to deliver the project, we were very busy with the design workshop, so on the day we had to tell the architect which material we were going to use we were not prepared. At that moment I remembered that my mom had brought me 2 sheets of cardboard 2 meters high and 1 meter wide. I thought that was enough material to make something interesting for the presentation.

Ya escogido el material faltaba decidir que realizar con él. Actualmente, el cartón es empleado para muchos mobiliarios muy creativos y llamativos. Pero, no quería repetir los ejemplos que les muestro abajo y tampoco tenia tanto cartón . Entonces pensé en hacer algo vertical, aprovechando la altura de la lamina, útil, que pudiese estar en cualquier casa y que se relacionara con la arquitectura pero además, con el diseño en general.

Once the material had been chosen, the next step was to decide what to do with it. Actually, cardboard is used for many creative and eye-catching furnishings. But, I didn't want to repeat the examples shown below and I didn't have so much cardboard. So I thought of making something vertical, taking advantage of the height of the sheet, useful, that could be in any house and that was related to architecture but also to design in general.

Revisando referencias vi que existía la elaboración de estantes con el material y opte por esa opción, pero no quería que fuese rectangular y común. Por lo que planteé que tuviera una forma relacionada con la arquitectura, pero que fuese alta y fácil de conocer. Y no recuerdo bien si lo vi o solo vino a mi mente: LE MODULOR¡

Checking references I saw that there was the elaboration of shelves with the material and I opted for that option, but I did not want it to be rectangular and common. So I suggested that it should have a shape related to architecture, but that it should be tall and easy to see. And I don't remember if I saw it or it just came to my mind: LE MODULOR¡

En resumen, El Modulor fue desarrollado como un puente visual entre dos escalas incompatibles, el sistema imperial (el pie y la pulgada anglosajones) y el sistema métrico (metros, centímetros…). Se basa en la altura de un hombre con su brazo levantado. La idea surge del gran arquitecto suizo Le Corbusier, el cual lo describió como una “gama de mediciones armoniosas para adaptarse a la escala humana, universalmente aplicable a la arquitectura y a las cosas mecánicas”. In short, the Modulor was developed as a visual bridge between two incompatible scales, the imperial system (the Anglo-Saxon foot and inch) and the metric system (meters, centimeters...). It is based on the height of a man with his arm raised. The idea comes from the great Swiss architect Le Corbusier, who described it as a "range of harmonious measurements to suit the human scale, universally applicable to architecture and mechanical things". El Resultado Final ✅

Utilizamos la silueta humana dibujada por Le Corbusier para representar el modulor para diseñar no solo un estante para libros que pudiese cumplir su función, sino que también fuese decorativo y, además, significativo en cuanto el diseño arquitectónico. Todo realizado en cartón.

The Final Result ✅

We used the human silhouette drawn by Le Corbusier to represent the modulor to design not only a bookcase that could fulfill its function, but also be decorative and, moreover, significant in terms of architectural design. All made of cardboard.

El estante mide una altura de 1,83m, con la mano llega a los 2m. Hicimos que su forma fuese lo mas parecido posible. Incluso, recortamos el ombligo, ya que es un punto de referencia en el sistema. Mantuvimos visible el material, ya que de eso se trataba, pero resaltando la figura y eso lo logramos cubriéndolo con un diseño de triángulos de cartulina negra. Finalmente, para darle estabilidad entrelazamos piezas de manera que pudiera mantenerse de pie.

The shelf measures a height of 1.83m, with the hand it reaches 2m. We made its shape as similar as possible. We even cut out the navel, since it is a reference point in the system. We kept the material visible, since that is what it was all about, but highlighting the figure and we did that by covering it with a design of black cardboard triangles. Finally, to give it stability we interlocked pieces so that it could stand upright.
