Puente del Dragón ~ 🐉 Dragon bridge in Alcalá de Guadaíra, Sevilla Spain 🇪🇸

With my next post into the Architecture+Design Community I want to show you the Puente Del Dragón - Puente Guardián del Castillo. THE DRAGON BRIDGE.

It states:
”The bridge commonly known as “Dragon Bridge” was built as part of Alcalá de Guadaíra’s ring road,which links the A-92 motorway (Seville-Almería) with the A-392 Alcalá-Dos Hermanas road.

The structure was designed by José Luis Manzanares, who also designed a bridge in Seville known as “Puente del Cachorro”.
The bridge is 123 metres long and emulates a dragon crossing the River Guadaíra, leaving behind the Castle, one of Europe’s largest Almohad fortresses. Hence, the dragon not only welcomes the visitors, but is also the guardian of the Castle and the defender of the town.

The bridge was inspired by the work of the Barcelona architect, Antonio Gaudí, and in particular by the dragon that decorates one of the fountains in Barcelona’s Park Güell. Like most of Gaudi’s work, he uses pieces of tiles to decorate the surfaces according to the trencadís, or mosaic, technique.”

We were visiting Sevilla for a long weekend away in October 2021. These phtotographs are taken with my iPhone on 25 October 2021.

Let me show you the beautiful tiled bridge now and the Castle of Guadaíra.

There is a parking lot just next to the bridge, so we parked our car and got out to walk in the park and view the bridge and castle.

A walking trail starts too from this parking lot going to the right side of Guadaíra. We didn’t walk the trail or viewed the castle up close, as we are on our way to Sevilla. This is just a quick stop to view the dragon bridge. 😉
We see this sign as we enter the park. You have a beautiful view at the Castle.

”The Alcala de Guadaira Castle is founded in 1280 by Alfonso X, in order to populate the hill of the fortress of Qalat Yabir, conquered from the Andalusians by Fernando III in 1247.

The Alcala de Guadaira Castle consists of several buildings and dominates the entire town from the top of the hill. It has an irregular plan with two patios, the wall consists of eleven towers, of which nine have an irregular plan and two are polygonal. In the courtyard is the Alcazar or Palace.”

Let’s look at the bridge now:

From afar we see the dragon 🐉 🐲

A closer look.

Crossing the road… we see the head very close by.

Here we walk past the head over the road to the other side of the park. Steps are leading down.

The balustrade and steps down are decorated too. See the sea star.

The entire walls are covered with beautiful designs of mosaic. You see a diver surrounded by coral 🪸 and fish 🐠 it all has a underwater sea view feel to it.
