A work of art in the open air | Plaza Botero in Medellín

Greetings friends of Hive and the Architecture+Design community I hope you are very well, I come to show you another emblematic place in Medellin and it is the Plaza Botero, cultural reference of Antioquia. This is one of the most famous squares in Medellin and Colombia because Botero Square exhibits an exhibition of sculptures made of bronze that show bulky bodies of people and animals product of the creativity of the artist Fernando Botero and that is why the name of the square. The famous artist died last year at the age of 91, actually he does not have a year of death, because his physical disappearance was in September 2023 and as he was from Medellin, the city lamented the death of the artist and the funeral ceremonies lasted several days.

Some time ago I said that one day I would present an exclusive publication of the Plaza Botero and I did not stop to take pictures because it was not safe to take my iPhone in this square and well it is very unfortunate to tell you that there is much insecurity in this tourist place where you see many shocking scenes talking about the dark reality of the society of this beautiful city and also so dangerous.

But because of the death of the artist Fernando Botero, the square was guarded so that only visitors could enter to enjoy it safely. The square was fenced for several months with security fences and there were entrances only in some places with many policemen so it was safer for tourists to enjoy the Plaza Botero and I took this moment to go to take some pictures thinking about the Architecture+Design community. I clarify that the Botero square at this moment does not have the security it had and again it is the same place where you can see quite dark scenes. It is very unfortunate, but luckily I was able to take advantage of the safe season of the square and here I show you the beauty of Plaza Botero that I was able to capture with the lens of my iPhone.

The bronze sculptures, known for being huge and very voluminous figures, are exhibited outdoors every day of the year in the Plaza Botero to pay tribute to the chubby curves, according to the style and tastes of the artist Fernando Botero.

The place is a cultural complex where there is also the Palace of Culture Rafael Uribe Uribe and the Museum of Antioquia and in the photos you can only see part of them while taking pictures of some of the sculptures.

I took pictures of several of the bronze sculptures and not all of them because there are many and it was worth visiting Plaza Botero.

The sculpture of the dog caught my attention because of the details of the face, especially the bronze whiskers. The artist was very careful with his works of art.

So far we have seen different bodies of animals and women who are naked but there are also figures with more modesty in Plaza Botero. Mr. Fernando had his own vision of beauty.

You can also choose to buy a souvenir of Plaza Botero among the street vendors offering replicas of miniature statues and other handicrafts.

I hope you liked the visit to Plaza Botero, a place you must visit if you come to Medellin, remembering that this city is a great Colombian metropolis with a lot of beauty and also with danger, something that I must recognize although I admire this city a lot. Bye bye.

Chao, chao.
