Silent, saving lives- Mouro lighthouse

in Architecture+Design3 years ago (edited)

Hi friends
Today I am talking about a building that because it is small and almost unadorned, it saves lives.
Mouro lighthouse

Faro de Mourocopia.jpg

We are located on the Magdalena Peninsula in Santander- Spain.
As you all know, the lighthouse has a very important mission and it is to warn the ships that the coast is a few meters away, that the cliffs are a few meters from the surface and that they cannot pass, they also indicate the route that large ships have. to follow.

As a child you always dreamed of them with the big waves that lapped or hit the building and the lighthouse keeper, that person who took care that everything would work, was there alone with the sea, the wind his thoughts and hundreds of birds that had him as a rest in their crossing.

This lighthouse is anchored on a small island off the coast, the island is called as the lighthouse, rather the lighthouse is called as the Mouro island.

The lighthouse began flashing its lights on February 15, 1860.
It was built like the English lighthouses in a conical shape, where the tower came out of the center of the house.
The lighthouse keeper was almost always a single person, he was the one who took care of his function by turning on the lights when the sun got dark or the day had a deep fog, thus many years passed with loss of life of the lighthouse keepers due to the inclemency of our sea, a rough sea that has no mercy when it gets angry.

The tower measures 18.39 meters high and ends in what is its focus, which consisted of a wick and mirrors that reflected the light.
In 1921 it was automated by replacing the wick with a flashing system with a burner for the naked flame, the mirrors were also replaced by a drum optics.
In 1989 fuel was also replaced, switching to photovoltaic solar energy
But they keep renovating it and in 2004, they paint it and put on the old aesthetic but modernizing its entire interior and its function, giving more strength to the light.

A white light is used with 1 + 2 flashes every 21 seconds, with the following phases: 0.5 + 4.5 + 0.5 + 1.5 + 0.5 + 13.5. The power of the flashlight makes light visible at a distance of 11 nautical miles . " wikipedia

As I was telling you, the Cantabrian Sea tends to get very angry, making big waves and this lighthouse shows it, I guess like the stories of many lighthouses, lighthouse keepers who gave their lives to have that little flame lit, but when the waves crashed against the building it licked their bodies and killed them.
They were lonely men since on many stormy days they were only at the lighthouse without being able to go out.
These silent buildings, always tall, always in danger, with their lights at night, flickering at a rhythm studied in advance, which all sailors know and appreciate.
They are the buildings most exposed to the vagaries of the weather.
We could also say that they are the most photographed, the ones that make you dream, of a romance or adventure.
So much literature around him, so many romantic or mystery movies, makes us dream.

But this is a real lighthouse on a tiny island and because it is summer and sunny makes it attract attention, it is the most valuable building for sea voyages.
Although many are humble constructions, they have been in the most dangerous of the coast for many centuries, in the early days only a wooden pyre to its function and today the lighthouses around the world have the latest technologies.
The Spanish territory has 191 lighthouses, almost all with modern technology and they no longer need the famous lighthouse keeper who could spend days locked up in a storm.
Also lose my life and if you hurry me the sea could eat the lighthouse.

The lighthouses and their romanticism, buildings that evolved from the first military watchtowers, outposts of surveillance and from where an elaborate chain of signals was used. From the primitive fires to the modern lanterns, the lighthouses have always been a relief for the sailors who traveled the waters of these coasts, tremendously wild and dangerous, being their design little less than universal. Happy Monday
Hello Juankar, how many lighthouse movies and how many lighthouses have you seen too, man of the coast and adventures haha.
Romanticism is in everyone and terror is a dark stormy night with a swell and wind roaring through the waves.
That day, we'd better stay on the couch with a good book on seafaring adventures.
Happy week my friend

Fantastic photographs.
Lighthouses nowadays have great technology. No need to be locked up inside turbulences.

Hello, that's how it is thanks to technology, lives are saved.
and the headlights make us fantasize
Happy week my friend

My Monday started busy.
I guess it will be the same as last week!
I need the lights to entertain me.
Hehehe 😝😜😁

Hello @txatxy. Like @juancar347, I also associate lighthouses with romance. They may be overlooked by the ordinary individual but, aside from possessing a significant role in being master guardians of our coastlines, they generally evoke a feeling of hope and a vital symbol of guidance to be responsible beacons of light for sailors, seafarers, and ocean lovers. As these humble towers of architecture sacrifice themselves to be isolated on remote islands for the sake of everyone's safety, isn't that enough to show us an authentic act of love? Have a restful day off friend. Happy Monday!

Hello today I will answer you soon hahaha
If the headlights promise that your trip will be perfect.
How not to love them when you live on the coast and know how important they are.
I have visited many lighthouses but the photos died with my hard drive years ago, I have always liked them, they seem magical to me alone against the sea.
I have never gotten a photo with big waves as I have seen many.
Can you imagine the fear that those people had to go through?
Take care, friend

Your speedy reply is much appreciated dear friend, haha. And truly, our seas and coastlines will never be complete without our beloved lighthouses. Take care! 😊

Hola amiga @txatxy
Los faros son muy llamativos desde siempre para mi también.
Siempre piensas las historias que han vivido y las que nos podrían contar los fareros, ¿verdad?
Me ha gustado tú trabajo ;)
Un saludo y feliz semana.

Hello friend.
Lighthouses have always been very striking for me too.
You always think of the stories they have lived and the stories the lighthouse keepers could tell us, don't you?
I liked your work ;)
Best regards and happy week.

Hola Garvi
Tú también eres mujer de costa y los faros nos representan de alguna manera.
Y las novelas de amor con esos faros en las portadas jaja
Gracias por pasar y comentar
Que tengas una bonita semana

Hi Garvi
You are also a woman from the coast and the lighthouses represent us in some way.
And the love novels with those headlights on the covers haha
Thanks for coming and commenting
have a nice week @garvi

I love lighthouses. It is my long-time dream to visit famous lighthouses in my country. And if given the chance I will include this lighthouse in my bucket list.

Lighthouse are always full of mysteries, intrigue, drama with so many stories imprinted on their very walls of ships passing, sinking, storms exploding...Imagine if those walls could talk...

What a great post. I am going to shine a light on a little lighthouse tomorrow too, but certainly not with the age, the history or the stories that yours could tell I'm sure....

people tend to forget the real uses of lighthouses other than picturesque postcard scenes and the true, solitary heroes, the lighthouse keepers, that stay to guard and maintain these beacons.. thank you for sharing this poignant article!
