Strolling through Vedado, visit a monument erected in honor of Major General José Miguel Gómez, a high-ranking officer of the Liberation Army in the independence struggles against Spanish domination, and later president of Cuba between 1909 and 1913.

It is located on Presidents Avenue, known as G Street in Vedado, in a traffic circle surrounded by important hospitals. The memorial is the work of the Italian architect Giovanni Nicolini and was inaugurated on May 18, 1936, 15 years after the death of the Major General in New York, and some 23 years after the end of his government. It keeps innumerable points of contact with the Roman monument, although ours has smaller dimensions.

Other works of this famous sculptor were the statue of Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra in the San Juan de Dios Park, in Old Havana, inaugurated in 1908, a park that took his name. It was made of white marble from the Carrara quarries. It was erected on a quadrangular pedestal, placed on a small stepped platform. We find it again in the construction of the monument to Major General of the Liberating Army, Alejandro Rodriguez Velazco, who was the first mayor of Havana.

The equestrian sculpture is installed on the corner of Linea and Paseo Streets, also in Havana's El Vedado, approximately three meters high and inaugurated in 1919. It was made of cream-colored marble. The monument has the equestrian figure of the warrior in bronze, with military uniform, and his horse rests on four legs symbolizing having survived the combat. On an upper pedestal there are allegorical images in relief of the liberating deed Source/

It has a horseshoe-shaped structure, bordered by a great semicircle type Roman hall, inspired by the monument erected in Rome in 1910 to the first king of unified Italy, Victor Manuel II, by Sacconi. With beautiful columns and a roofed corridor, but without walls. This site has a beautiful architecture, made of pink marble and bronze decorations. It has three staircases to access the upper part. The first, at the main entrance, gives access to an arched entrance, with beautiful decorations sculpted in marble, revealing an obelisk in its center, on a base of pink granite from the quarries of Ravenna, Italy.

The main monument has an attractive design, composed of the statue of the martyr made in light bronze with a height of 3.50 meters, located on a pedestal, venerated by his followers in the lower area of the base in high relief, also cast in bronze. On the sides of the base, on opposite sides, you can see two white marble statues representing strength and magnanimity. It is decorated by half-naked men, women and children cast in copper, as well as reflecting on the sides six figures in heroic positions, representative of the provinces in which they were dividing the country at the time of the execution of the work.

On the sides of the monument there are statues of women, with tunics, seated on a throne, made of marble. The back of the monument has to my surprise a door, which gives access to it as if it were a small tower. This part is also decorated with a scene of a wake for the martyr.

In the surroundings there are beautiful small squares surrounded by two temples, which form the horseshoe that we described at the beginning. The temple of the Left, has semi-nude female and male sculptures and the main one wearing a case and tunics, located on the roof. The entrance has four columns, a decoration at the base and an entrance on the side in the form of a door with decorated frames. In its entrance are sculpted the Latin initials MDCCCLVII MCMXXI. It represents History, freedom and time.

The temple on the right MCMIX MCMXIII, represents the right, Peace and peace. Presenting similar structure to the other temple, it varies in the inscriptions. Then going down some small stairs we find another level of terrace. Placing the monument on two terrace levels.
The steps in the intermediate terrace sections are described in the form of a semicircle, giving it a very attractive touch.

The monument is composed of benches, fountains and sculptures, visitors can sit and rest, while delighting in the majesty of the place, as it also provides a panoramic view of the landscape of Vedado which is very iconic. It allows visitors to shelter from the rain and take a short break. The surroundings are adorned with decorative bushes that make a contrast between green and white, very attractive and beautiful.

The design looks very intricate and indeed the Italian influence was apparent on its styles.

It is one of my favorite monuments in Havana. I lived very close to this place in Vedado and in the afternoons I liked to go here to get some fresh air. Thank you for sharing and bringing back those beautiful memories.
