Ci, którzy znają jego wcześniejsze przygody, dobrze wiedzą, skąd ten pseudonim pochodzi, tym, którzy nie znają nie będę w tym miejscu szczegółowo opowiadał o wuju-majsterkowiczu, wraku ferrari rozbitego gdzieś pod Zakopanem i amfibii o odstraszającym wyglądzie – niech te wskazówki zachęcą do przeczytania poprzednich książek. |
Today's book - I'm not quite sure if it should be included in the series, as I seem to have read it as part of a work project... but the subject is not work-related, so let it be - takes us back to the time of that slightly better socialist Poland - the one where things were already not so bad, and also yet not so bad again. Our companion will be Tomasz, also known by his pseudonym 'Mr Automobile'. Those who are familiar with his earlier adventures will know the origin of this pseudonym; for those who are not, I will not go into detail here about the uncle who was a do-it-yourselfer, the wreck of a Ferrari that crashed somewhere near Zakopane, and an amphibious vehicle with a repulsive appearance - let these hints encourage you to read the previous books. |
| W tej historii Tomasz nie jest już muzealnikiem-amatorem, ani nawet kustoszem w wiejskim muzeum. Teraz jest już pracownikiem Ministerstwa Kultury i Sztuki, w którym przypadają mu rozmaite zadania, śledztwa i poszukiwania wymagające nie tylko odpowiedniej wiedzy, ale też umiejętności zachowania wszystkiego w tajemnicy – taki agent do specjalnych poruczeń. Właśnie wrócił z urlopu we Francji (co prawda, nad Loarą też zajmowały go tematy okołosłużbowe) i został wezwany przed oblicze dyrektora. Tomasz przypuszcza, że zostanie mu powierzone wyjaśnienie kwestii fromborskich kryjówek pułkownika Königga, pełnych zrabowanych zabytków – o której to sprawie usłyszał w trakcie urlopu. Dowiaduje się jednak, że Fromborkiem już się zajmuje magister Pietruszka, ciągle skarżący się na to, że jest pomijany przy przydzielaniu najciekawszych spraw. Tomaszowi przypada śledztwo w sprawie trzech niezmiernie rzadkich i niezmiernie wartościowych średniowiecznych monet z okresu początków państwa polskiego – które znienacka i prawie równocześnie pojawiły się na rynku i zostały zaproponowane kilku muzeom, za wysoką, ale jednak rozsądną cenę. Tomasz przyjmuje śledztwo i obiecuje nie wtrącać się do sprawy Fromborka. |
In this story, Tomasz is no longer an amateur museum worker or even a curator in a village museum. He is now an employee of the Ministry of Culture and Art, where he is assigned various tasks, investigations and searches that require not only the right knowledge, but also the ability to keep everything secret - a kind of special agent. He has just returned from a holiday in France (admittedly, he was also busy with work-related matters on the Loire) and has been summoned by the director. Tomasz assumes that he will be tasked with investigating Colonel Königg's hideouts in Frombork, which are said to be full of looted treasure - a matter he heard about during his holiday. However, he learns that Frombork is already in the hands of M.A. Pietruszka, who constantly complains that he is overlooked for the most interesting cases. Tomasz is assigned to investigate the case of three extremely rare and valuable medieval coins from the early years of the Polish state - which suddenly and almost simultaneously appeared on the market and were offered to several museums at a high but reasonable price. Tomasz accepts the investigation and promises not to interfere in the Frombork case. |
| Bardzo szybko jednak okazuje się, że tak, jak muzeom zaproponowano trzy bezcenne monety, tak w pierwszym ze schowków pułkownika odkryto, między innymi, 150 monet – 147 bardzo wartościowych i 3 bezwartościowe fenigi. Tomasz dodaje trzy do trzech i dość szybko przekonuje swojego zwierzchnika, że do podmiany doszło jeszcze zanim magister Pietruszka odnalazł schowek. I że w pozostałych schowkach też można takiej podmianki dokonać – na drogocennych kielichach i szlachetnych rubinach. Co za tym idzie, trzeba złodzieja uprzedzić za wszelką cenę i odnaleźć te schowki zanim jemu się ta sztuka uda.
Dyrektor się zgadza. Jednak sprawę schowków wciąż oficjalnie prowadzi Pietruszka, zaś Tomasz jedzie do Fromborka oficjalnie w celu przygotowania zaktualizowanego przewodnika po mieście.

Soon, however, it becomes clear that at the same time as the three priceless coins were offered to the museums, 150 coins were discovered in the first of the colonel's hiding places - 147 very valuable ones and 3 worthless pfennings. Tomasz puts three and three together and quickly convinces his boss that the exchange had already taken place before M.A. Pietruszka found the cache. And that a similar exchange can be made in the other hideouts - for valuable goblets and precious rubies. Therefore, the thief must be stopped and the caches found before he succeeds. The director agrees. However, the matter of the caches is still officially in Pietruszka's hands, while Tomasz officially goes to Frombork to prepare an updated guide to the town. |
| Dalej przygody nabierają tempa. Na drodze Tomasza stają – z lepszymi lub gorszymi zamiarami – iluzjonista o pseudonimie Cagliostro (plus królik, myszy i zaskroniec!), złowrogi As i ekipa nim sterująca: Profesor i Ala, Baśka – harcerz i zarazem dobry znajomy Tomasza, mała Zosia, inżynier Zegadło, próbujący nawiązać bliższe relacje z Alą oraz, oczywiście, odwieczny rywal Tomasza, jego zdecydowanie odległy od uczciwości kolega ze studiów – Waldemar Batura. Kto stanie po słusznej stronie, a kto będzie próbował skarby ukraść i przehandlować – tego już dowiecie się z książki. Bo jak się skończy – bez większych trudności możecie przewidzieć, przygody Pana Samochodzika na ogół kończą się w jeden sposób. Oczywiście nie zabraknie zawiłej intrygi, wzajemnych podchodów, sztuczek i interwencji milicji. Będą też pościgi, w których jak zwykle doskonale wykaże się Tomaszowy samochód oraz zasadzki, dzięki którym swoje niezwykłe możliwości będzie mógł zaprezentować As. |
The adventures accelerate. Standing in Tomasz's way - for better or worse - are an illusionist nicknamed Cagliostro (as well as a rabbit, mice and a snake!), the sinister Ace and the team controlling him: The Professor and Ala, Baśka - a scout and a good friend of Tomasz's, little Zosia, the engineer Zegadło, who is trying to establish a closer relationship with Ala and, of course, Tomasz's arch-rival, his definitely not honest college friend - Waldemar Batura. Who will be on the right side and who will try to steal and trade treasures - you will find out in the book. The ending is easy to predict, as Mr Automobile's adventures usually end the same way. Of course, there will be intrigue, backstabbing, trickery and police intervention. There will also be car chases, in which Tomasz's car will, as usual, excel, and ambushes, thanks to which Ace will be able to show off his extraordinary abilities. |
| Sama książka mogłaby być znacznie cieńsza i bardziej zwarta, jednak – jak to w „Samochodzikach” bywa – nie brakuje dydaktyzmu krajoznawczego i historycznego. A zatem mamy tutaj sporo wszelkiego rodzaju historii związanych z Kopernikiem i Ziemiami Odzyskanymi (czy też, jeśli kto woli – dawnymi Prusami Wschodnimi), oczywiście przedstawianych z punktu widzenia zgodnego z linią ówczesnej władzy (tzn. o „pruskiej twierdzy zaborczości i militaryzmu” z której „wyruszyły hordy przeciw światu”). Są i historie o wyzwalaniu tych terenów podczas II wojny światowej, są opisy fromborskiej katedry z jej zabytkami, opisy mazurskich cmentarzy, wojen z Krzyżakami i tym podobne smaczki. Rzecz bardzo cenna w latach 70, czy nawet 80, kiedy to internet nie istniał, na encyklopedię czy książki naukowe – nie każdy mógł sobie pozwolić – wówczas wplecenie takich treści w książkę przygodową o nakładzie idącym w dziesiątki tysięcy (jeśli nie więcej) było bardzo dobrym sposobem edukacyjnym. Dziś, kiedy ta sama – a nawet bardziej szczegółowa i uzupełniona o nowe odkrycia – wiedza znajduje się zaledwie o parę klików od czytelnika – można by się może nawet bez tego obejść. Z drugiej strony jednak wtedy trafiłaby tylko do tych, którzy by jej aktywnie szukali, a skoro można ją przekazać każdemu i, być może, skłonić do dalszych aktywnych poszukiwań... Tylko we współczesnych wydaniach wypadałoby jednak te wstawki partyjne opatrzyć odpowiednimi przypisami. |
The book itself could have been much thinner and more compact, but - as usual in the Mr Automobile series - there is a lot of didacticism about the landscape and history. So here we have quite a lot of all sorts of stories related to Copernicus and the Recovered Territories (or, if you prefer, the former East Prussia), naturally presented from a point of view in line with the line of the authorities of the time (i.e. about the "Prussian fortress of possessiveness and militarism" from which "hordes set out against the world"). There are also stories about the liberation of the area during the Second World War, descriptions of Frombork Cathedral and its landmarks, descriptions of Masurian cemeteries, the wars with the Teutonic Knights and similar tidbits. It was a very valuable thing in the 70s and 80s, when there was no internet and not everyone could afford encyclopaedias or scientific books - at that time it was a very good educational method to weave such content into an adventure book with a circulation of tens of thousands (if not more). Today, when the same knowledge - or even more detailed and supplemented by new discoveries - is only a few clicks away from the reader, it might even be possible to do without it. On the other hand, at that time it would only reach those who actively sought it out, and since it can be passed on to everyone and perhaps stimulate further active research... In modern editions, however, it might be appropriate to footnote such Party-included material. |
Is this part of a book series or a standalone?
This is a part of a series. The main series, written by Zbigniew Nienacki himself, consists of 15 books. After his death in 1994 it has been continued by various authors, and it consists now some 160+ books, with the main protagonist, Mr. Automobile has been not used after book 106, with his disciple taking the main role completely.
