✨ Book Review: Damsel [ES/EN]

¡Hola amigos lectores! Hoy me pasó por acá para traerles la reseña del último libro que leí que es de fantasía e intenta meter un poco de feminismo en su historia. Les estoy hablando del libro llamado Damisela de la autora Elana K. Arnold.

Hello fellow readers! Today I stopped by to bring you the review of the latest book I read that is fantasy and tries to put a bit of feminism in its story. I'm talking about the book called Damsel by author Elana K. Arnold.

Trama - Plot

Esta historia empieza como un cuento de hadas, con el príncipe yendo a rescatar a la damisela que vive en un castillo aislado y se encuentra custodiada por un feroz dragón. Para salvarla y convertirse en rey, como toda la generación de reyes de Harding, deberá derrotar al dragón. Con este panorama despierta Ama, la joven damisela que no tiene recuerdos de su pasado, ni del tiempo que estuvo en ese castillo con el dragón, lo único que sabe es que se despertó en los brazos del príncipe y este le dio un nombre y ahora deberá convertirse en su esposa, futura reina y darle un nuevo heredero al reino. Eso es lo que dice él y lo que dicen todos en Harding, debe aprender a comportarse como una verdadera dama y adaptarse a su nuevo papel en el palacio. Pero, Ama se empieza a cuestionar todo esto y una duda la asalta, ¿qué pasa si en realidad ella no quería ser rescatada?

This story begins as a fairy tale, with the prince going to rescue the damsel who lives in an isolated castle and is guarded by a fierce dragon. To save her and become king, like all of Harding's generation of kings, he must defeat the dragon. With this scenario awakens Ama, the young damsel who has no memory of her past, nor of the time she was in that castle with the dragon, the only thing she knows is that she woke up in the arms of the prince and he gave her a name and now she must become his wife, future queen and give him a new heir to the kingdom. That's what he says and what everyone in Harding says, she must learn to behave like a true lady and adapt to her new role in the palace. But, Ama begins to question all this and a doubt assails her, what if she didn't really want to be rescued?

Reseña - Review

De este libro me llamó muchísimo la atención la sinopsis a la hora de decidir comprarlo, parecía poderosa y con un gran mensaje. Ahora bien, tiene este mensaje importante de que las mujeres somos más que esposas y madres de herederos, que podemos elegir crear nuestra realidad y mostrarle al mundo nuestra verdadera fortaleza. Pero esto queda un poco empañado por el estilo de escritura.

The synopsis of this book really caught my attention when I decided to buy it, it seemed powerful and with a great message. Now, it has this important message that women are more than wives and mothers of heirs, that we can choose to create our reality and show the world our true strength. But this is marred a bit by the writing style.

No es que esté mal escrito, es que hay muchas escenas que te hacen cuestionarte seguir con la lectura del libro porque de verdad sentí un mar de vergüenza ajena leyendo todo esto. Sin embargo, continúe la lectura porque la trama te invita a llegar al final de la historia para saber su culminación, tiene su lado atrapante.

It's not that it's badly written, it's just that there are many scenes that make you question to continue reading the book because I really felt a sea of embarrassment reading all this. However, continue reading because the plot invites you to get to the end of the story to know its culmination, it has its catching side.

Muchas veces sentí impotencia y bronca hacía todos los personajes de este libro. Como todos parecen moverse en este ambiente patriarcal, se hace mucha referencia al mástil del rey para dar a conocer su dominancia, todos estaban ahí para complacerlo a él y sus deseos, era patético de leer.

Many times I felt helplessness and anger towards all the characters in this book. How they all seem to move in this patriarchal environment, there is a lot of reference to the king's mast to make his dominance known, everyone was there to please him and his desires, it was pathetic to read.

Pero así como me dio estas escenas que borraré de mi memoria para mi propio bien, también me dio uno de los finales más satisfactorios que leí en mi vida. Todo lo que yo desee para este rey de pacotilla se terminó cumpliendo y Ama demostró que ella era más que una damisela en apuros, no necesitaba ser rescatada por un hombre.

But just as she gave me these scenes that I will erase from my memory for my own good, she also gave me one of the most satisfying endings I've ever read. Everything I wished for this trashy king ended up being fulfilled and Ama proved that she was more than a damsel in distress, she didn't need to be rescued by a man.

Creo que es la primera vez que leo un libro y no termino encandilada por ningún personaje masculino, pero creo que esa también era la intención de la escritora. Es más, catalogaría a este libro como un cuento de hadas oscuro donde no todo es lo que parece. No sé si se los recomiendo del todo, aunque sin dudas es una lectura interesante que les hará sentir ganas de revolear el libro cada tanto.

I think it's the first time I read a book and didn't end up dazzled by any male character, but I think that was also the writer's intention. Moreover, I would categorize this book as a dark fairy tale where not everything is what it seems. I don't know if I recommend it at all, although it is certainly an interesting read that will make you want to pick up the book from time to time.
