Hello book-loving community! Today I wanted to recommend you a book by this Argentine author, Adolfo Bioy Casares, which is very interesting. It is a short novel about old age and how difficult it is to accept it, also about the fear in a society where old people are unnecessary people and where they are attacked.

Es una novela corta que trata sobre la vejez y lo difícil que es aceptarla, también sobre el miedo en una sociedad donde los viejos son personas innecesarias y donde se atenta contra ellos.
Synopsis/Sinopsis
This short story tells the story of the war between the young and the old. Its protagonist is Isidoro Vidal (“Don Isidro”, wrongly called), a pensioner who one day wakes up and discovers that the young have decided to start attacking and threatening the old. The novel is set in the neighborhood of Palermo, in the City of Buenos Aires, where all the characters live.
Esta narración breve relata la guerra entre los jóvenes y los viejos. Su protagonista es Isidoro Vidal (“Don Isidro”, llamado erróneamente), un jubilado que un día despierta y descubre que los jóvenes han decidido comenzar a atacar y a amenazar a los viejos. La novela está ambientada en el barrio de Palermo, en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, donde viven todos los personajes.

Adolfo Bioy Casares, an outstanding author of 20th century Argentine literature, who was named Member of the Legion of Honor of France in 1981, and designated Illustrious Citizen of the City of Buenos Aires in 1986. Bioy Casares also received, among other awards, the Grand Prize of Honor of the Argentine Society of Writers in 1975 and the Cervantes Prize in 1990. In 1975 Leopoldo Torre Nilsson directed the film “La guerra del cerdo” based on this novel.

This novel was recommended to me by my mother and since I read it, it has remained engraved in my memory. It is interesting from the very human point of view with which it is narrated. Old age and fear combined with a society where the young hate the old and get together to plan crimes. What could happen when our protagonist is a pensioner trying to survive?
Esta novela me la recomendó mi mamá y desde que la leí me quedó grabada en la memoria. Es interesante desde el punto de vista tan humano con el que es narrada. La vejez y el miedo combinado con una sociedad donde los jóvenes detestan a los viejos y se reúnen para planear crímenes. ¿Qué podría pasar cuando nuestro protagonista es una jubilado que trata de sobrevivir?
Isidoro Vidal's history, set in Palermo in 1969, shows us how difficult it is to accept old age, deepens themes such as indignation, injustice and fear in this macabre society. Mixed in the daily habits of his life, such as mate, siesta and truco games with the boys, the protagonist realizes that he is no longer young and a revolution begins in his head, just as terror becomes real.
La historia de Isidoro Vidal, ubicada en Palermo en el año 1969, nos muestra lo difícil que es aceptar la vejez, profundiza temas como la indignación, la injusticia y el miedo en esta macabra sociedad. Mezclado en lo hábitos cotidianos de su vida, como el mate, la siesta y los partidos de truco con los muchachos, el protagonista se va dando cuenta de que ya no es joven y una revolución comienza en su cabeza, al igual que el terror se hace real.
The struggle between young and old is always present, including their friends, where murders and kidnappings of old people are very common, like the newspaper seller “Don Manuel” who is killed for no reason by a group of young people at the beginning of the book. The old men are torn between the desire to continue their normal lives, indignation and fear, and even family member relationships begin to be affected. The young people have such an irrational hatred of those old people that it seems that what they really hate is to become like them. The author relates, “In this war the boys kill out of hatred for the old man they are going to be. They do not understand that every old man is the future of some young man.
La lucha entre jóvenes y viejos siempre está presente, incluido sus amigos, donde los asesinatos y secuestros de viejos son muy comunes, como el vendedor de diarios “Don Manuel” a quien en el principio del libro un grupo de jóvenes mata sin razón alguna. Los viejos se debaten entre los deseos de continuar su vida normal, la indignación y el miedo e incluso las relaciones familiares comienzan a ser afectadas. Los jóvenes tienen un odio tan irracional a aquellos ancianos que parece que lo que realmente odian es llegar a ser como ellos. El autor relata: “En esta guerra los chicos matan por odio contra el viejo que van a ser”. No comprenden que todo viejo es el futuro de algún joven.
The fantasy and the sinister in the everyday startles us and opens our eyes to a very human subject. It is a superb short novel and very interesting to read. I know there was a movie based on it, I would like to see it someday.
La fantasía y lo siniestro en la cotidianidad nos sobresalta y nos abre los ojos ante un tema bastante humano. Es una novela breve magnífica y muy interesante para leer. Sé que hubo una película basada en ella, me gustaría verla algún día.
