The magic of web novels and their western counterpart future [Eng | Spa]

in Hive Book Clublast year (edited)

Hello, Hive Book Club community!

Have you ever read a web novel? This genre tends to be about fantasy, action, RPG, history, alternate universes, romance, and a lot of sci-fi, and it has become the training wheels of any non-fanfic writer with deep creativity on the Asian continent, as they are often a railway to become famous and to produce several adaptations, but, Where are the western counterparts?

The western counterpart is something we all know and love yet often left for dead in old Reddit forum posts, as some random creepypastas, there we have the web novels of the American and European side now that some big companies put an eye on them, but, what is going on with the publisher of western counterpart? Why no one is taking the good material from the crap mountain and making adaptations out of it?

Writing a novel, a webnovel

Made by me in Canva from the source image uploaded by Andrew Seaman in unsplash.

I'm gonna start by speaking about genres, most of the famous web novels series like Sword Art Online, are either high fantasy or Sci-fi, to the point that it is no surprise to see an American "inspired" history called "Ready Player One" is exactly as centered on said genres but with the little difference of tone and target audience and a more dark adult tone and a good film adaptation.

SAO is a fine example of the web novel industries, as soon as it became a big boom on the free novels sites, it got picked up by a publisher, that taught the already experienced author Reki Kawahara (At that time known as Fumio Kunori, his publishing pseudonym) how to make it a big success and they both profit from it a lot.

That cooperation got us to this day adaptations that have gone from physical light novel books to manga and Anime versions of it, and there are some talks about a series of real-life films coming soon after the grand finale of this story on the anime adaptation.

This is a story of success, but let's look at the American counterpart, let's take an example with one that has both a good and an awful adaptation, Slenderman, yes, that old creepypasta is a web novel in definition, you could read it for free, and it was self-published to be read just for popularity, as the majority of web novels.

Sorry I can't place the book cover for copyrights, but we got the anime one

Slenderman began as a random internet post on 4chan (an internet forum) as part of a photo edition contest that originated in Something Awful that later on inspired a movement and went totally off rails in the hands of crappy publishers and caused the downfall of its potential as a horror story, and its author career.

The author, better known as Victor Surge (real name Eric Knudsen) had a set of different western inspirations for the character, from the film Phantasm to the big famous horror inspirations of America, Stephen King, and Howard Phillips Lovecraft, these influenced his works into making a supernatural being with a single moral like purpose as Slenderman was characterized with the role of being an apex predator, one that hunted child molesters and rapers (Predators of mankind) and he was often seen in public areas full of children, hunting for his next prey.

The original creepypasta was supposed to be a deterrent to molesting children and that is exactly why it got so popular on 4chan and eventually became viral on the internet, but soon lost its form as Eric abandoned the project by the continual denials of publishers to make it either a book or a film. Then the viral web series Marble Hornets got created and Slendy was everywhere on the internet again, yet nowhere to be found on the main media.

The author gave permission to these Slenderman copycats, Video games, and the whole "Operator universe" as well as a few kick-starter films, but finally, after the huge hit of the YouTube Marble Hornets grand finale, Sony pictures came to the rescue and bought off the rights to do an adaptation of Slenderman, and they did a complete disaster out of it.

Slender Man of Sony was one of those expected hits that make a quick buck but flopped on the critic's side, as they made every possible mistake with this creative idea to the point that they got an 8% popularity score on Rotten Tomatoes, no wonder they paid big bucks to make it disappear off the website, but these are few of the many of the problems with adaptations of web novels on the western side.

Same as past image, I can't paste the original Slenderman image but I can paste its adaptation one

This being the state of modern publishers on the Western side, says quite a lot for its future as we have great works like Witcher (Not a web novel but a plain example of my point) and people that are nothing but butchers in charge of them, and these acts are not only reduced to our western works.

There is an oncoming Netflix adaptation that most of its readers don't even know it's a web novel in origin, the Tree body problem, yeah, that incredible sci-fi book saga, It was originally a self-published web novel pitch on the Science Fiction World website as part of a contest. Care to say that it won, and it made a huge hit whiting the readers, making SFW buy it and support its author for the rest of the chapters, making him able to create the trilogy that we all know and love, but it is coming soon to the slaughterhouse of Netflix adaptations(Oh god I hope they don't ruin it).

Finally I get to cite a book cover, from a movie website

We can see with these examples how different web novels are in adaptations depending on the continent they are born of, and this is in itself something that we, the readers, should do something about, as more and more adaptations are total disasters and more publishers get used to ignoring the source materials and supporting "sure hits" rather than risking money on support a somehow unknown author from some random website, as we keep seeing a pattern of continuous neglect on modern works of the western internet culture into cinema and books (Unless it is a romance novel, those always get adapted).

Writing hits one after another

This neglect is something that foreshadows a horrible future, but there is hope, and I hate to say it, but it is Amazon with its Kindle Direct Publishing system that shines a light on this issue and offers a helping hand to new authors as a whole, but there are other choices like Royal Road, Google Books and of course Wattpad.

Royal Road has something that most of the Western counterparts lack, it is free, you could read a novel on the site with no problems and some non-invasive ads, but you would have to wait for the next chapter from 2 to 7 days if it's still ongoing as a work, or you could switch to Patreon, and read about 10 to 25 chapters ahead if you support the author, or go as far as wait for it to be completed and published on Amazon as part of their collaboration, effectively mimicking the web novel to light novel progression on the Asian counterpart.

So if you have a good idea of what to write, and if it's fantasy, romance, or something in the young adult genre, the best place would be Royal Road, as you could get support both through PayPal and Patreon, and if you make a hit out of your story, you could get a good editor to look at it and push it to Amazon self-publishing team, making your story shine.

The future of web novel to light novel progression is already here, but, Where is the light novel to tv series adaptation on our continent? There are some cases on Hulu+Wattpad and even some Sci-Fy channel ones, but nothing truly shines in the mainstream media so far, no big budget productions are being made out of these good ideas, yet there is one that made itself a big hit on Netflix.

Through My Window jumped from a self-published web novel on Wattpad to a full-on printed novel on Amazon and finally medium budget Netflix adaptation, yet there are few examples like these, and more than millions of web novels on western sites if they are all combined, so there is hope we get more adaptations like these, but is there actual support of these small authors?

Examples like Through My Window, which originally was refused by several publishers, and eventually accepted by Grupo Planeta and Amazon, show that there is support available to said small authors and some people that have dedicated themselves to help to pull the hidden jewels out of the dirt mountain, even if the adaptations end up being a disaster, at least there is the hope of change for the western side of it, while the Asian one, they are doing fine already.

What are your thoughts on web novels and their adaptations? I find this issue something to look deeply into in modern literature, as most people don't have a way to get into a good publisher and editors that helps their ideas to become books, and even less being published into the gems they can be, I will read your feedback in the comments section below.

Yay! 🤗

This actually like a history of asian books which have evolved into manga and anime, honestly speaking they are favorite they to have every kind of story your looking for, like currently am following the Tokyo revengers, you should see it.

Tokyo revengers is the usual bad guy plot with a mix of time travel and a lot of the dark side of humans... I love how it losed little from the manga to the anime, sadly it dint started as a web novel :(

😥, either ways it's still an intriguing story
