KOTLC Book 1 Chapter 1 Summary

My name is @keeperseeker. I am an avid reader who greatly enjoys Keeper of the Lost Cities (KOLTC) book series. When I first was introduced to this series by one of my best friends, I sat outside and devoured the book.

I want to encourage others, including homeschoolers, to read this series. I hope you enjoy my chapter-by-chapter summary of the series.

Chapter 1 Summary:

Sophie is a twelve-year-old senior in high school. She has shoulder-length blonde hair and wears dark clothing.

Sophie’s parents are protective of her. When she had a newspaper article written about her, Sophie’s parents complained. The newspaper editor was upset as well, he had wanted to prioritize the article about the continual fire that burned with “bizarre white-hot flames” and “smoke that smelled of burnt sugar” over an unknown girl.

On day, Sophie’s high school class went to a history museum on a field trip. She got teased by her teacher and peers. Sophie has been able to read people’s thoughts since she was five when she fell and hit her head, but no one knows she can. Sophie often wears headphones to block out the voices in her head. As well as being a Telepath, Sophie has photographic memory.

While at the museum, Sophie noticed a boy staring at her. She focused on his eyes; teal, like smooth sea glass. They were so bright they glittered. Then he came to talk to her. He smiled a movie worthy smile and asked if the newspaper article was about her. Sophie noticed the boy had a crisp accent. The boy turned the conversation to the dinosaur in front of them. He asked her if she thought dinosaurs looked like the exhibit. She responded no.

The boy started to leave when a group of kindergarteners rushed in. Their thoughts pierced Sophie’s mind. She put her hands on her temples and noticed the boy doing the same. The boy asked her if she could hear the voices. Sophie tried to hear his thoughts, but they were quiet. The boy asked her who she was and if she was a Telepath. The boy told her that his name was Fitz. Fitz told her he was also a Telepath as well, and “they” had been looking for her for twelve years.

Sophie ran outside and began coughing because of the smoke from the bizarre flames. Fitz ran after her yelling that Sophie did not have to be afraid. She ran halfway across a crosswalk when she heard tires screeching.

End of the book 1 chapter 1.

Let’s continue the conversation:

  1. What do you think about the "Bizarre white-hot flames"?
  2. Do you think it was a good idea for Sophie to talk to a random stranger?
  3. Do you think it would be a good or bad thing to be able to read someone's thoughts?

I hope you enjoyed this summary. I would enjoy hearing your thoughts about the first chapter.
