Hello Hello Community! ✨, Are we here to discuss Ali Hazelwood's most controversial book? Well, yes, because I read everything this author writes, even her shopping list, and because it's always interesting to come across a book because of the gossip or controversy it has generated 🤭. However, I'll tell you right away that I didn't understand the controversy because the book isn't that strong. I can say that I've read more risqué things 😂. Still, something that was quite interesting throughout this read was noticing how Ali was trying new things, and I will always applaud when authors do this despite having already found their ‘magic formula.’ But before I go into more detail, let's move on to the full review of Deep End 🏊🏻‍♀️.

Scarlett Vandermeer was set to be the most outstanding trampoline jumper in her group, but a turn of events and a serious injury that almost cost her her entire career have led her to a more secondary role where she has had to face her own self-criticism, added to all the effort required to get a remarkable university degree in order to specialise in the area she wants. Scarlett has come to the conclusion that she cannot enter into a romantic relationship at the moment, so she shies away from any interaction of this kind, especially because when it comes to sexuality, there are tastes that seem to embarrass her a little.

Lukas Blomqvist gives the impression of being the best at everything he does. Not only is he the world champion and captain of the swimming team, but it seems that his studies are also going wonderfully. and although his long-term relationship has just ended, this does not seem to bother him too much, especially since it ended on good terms. So when the opportunity arises to have a purely sexual relationship with Scarlett, with whom he coincidentally shares the same unconventional tastes in this area, he does not hesitate for a second. Although it all starts as a casual arrangement, it soon turns into a romance that could last a lifetime 💖.

Let's start this review bearing in mind that I actually read this book in April. I know that many months have passed, but the reason I didn't write a review at the time was that I needed to let the book sink in. My opinion of this story at that time is not the same as the one I am going to give you today for various reasons, but the main one is that at that time the book had just been published and was surrounded by controversy, mainly because the story involves unconventional sexual practices, or to be more specific, BDSM. However, if you ask me, it is really a book that attempts to include such practices and falls somewhat short in the process.

So, from my point of view, I don't understand why all this controversy arose. I assume that perhaps Ali's readership wasn't ready to read something like this, or they were surprised that she wanted to experiment with this theme, or maybe the community was alarmed in vain, because I can tell you that it's not Ali Hazelwood's most explicit book; that title still belongs to Not In Love 😂.

And it is precisely the incorporation of these sexual practices that I would like to start with. The reality is that the story revolves around a sexual agreement between two people who share the same tastes in this area, exploring the dominant and submissive dynamic, obviously with mutual consent. To say that the book delves beyond what I have just described would be an exaggeration, because at no point does it stray from this line. In fact, one of the flaws in the story, which has become an objective criticism, is that when the relationship between the protagonists begins (which it does through this sexual agreement), a list is drawn up of what they want to experience and what they do not want to experience. to know what is and is not permitted between them. This list never appears in the book, meaning that the reader does not know what was written on it, so in the end, the question remains as to whether there was really any in-depth research behind this book, and to what extent it was explored in the story.

I remember that when I finished reading the book, the first thing I thought was, ‘People got alarmed over nothing.’ But now, having let the book sink in and formed a more solid opinion, I've come to the conclusion that this was simply a book in which the author was trying to explore new themes and gauge the receptiveness of her readership, not only because of the incorporation of new sexual elements, but also because it was the first sports romance she had written.

In addition to this, for the first time in one of her books, we have a female protagonist who attends psychological therapy, something essential for any athlete and even more so for those who have suffered some kind of sporting accident that has resulted in an injury and a whole course of medical treatment. So, with so many new elements that the author wanted to explore, the audience decided to go for the most scandalous one and stuck with it, bringing popularity to the book, there's no denying that, when the truth is that the author has much better stories that did not achieve the same level of popularity generated by controversy.

And I wanted to get to this point too, because although the story is entertaining, it is not the author's best. When I finished reading it, I remember my feeling was, ‘Ah! Okay, it's entertaining,’ but it was not something transcendental in my life as other books by Ali Hazelwood have been. In fact, to this day, I find it difficult to remember the names of the protagonists, something that does not happen to me with her other books. so for me, that means the story is a little irrelevant, and personally, I think it's due to the excessive use of sexual content, which I didn't feel was in tune with the tone of the book. It's like I felt the story was a whole line of pink, and suddenly it had rough brushstrokes of black.

Even so, I think the best thing about this book is its protagonists, and the way it is written drew me so deeply into the story that I didn't see who the antagonist was going to be until it was too obvious. For a moment, I forgot that Ali's books always have an antagonist, and I didn't remember until they were about to reveal it to me. This is definitely due to the excellent narrative that carried the book from beginning to end, as well as the complexity with which she wrote her characters, which made me more interested in them than in discovering who the villain was.

Within a story full of attempts to explore new things, we also find glimpses of Ali's ‘magic formula,’ mainly in her protagonists, who do not stray from the mould she has already well defined. Something very important is that there is a very interesting cameo by two characters who are very dear to Ali Hazelwood's fan community, and I know that Lucas and Scarlett also have a cameo in one of the author's recently published books, so in this way we see the construction of Ali's entire universe of stories. Whether it's a sports romance, a science romance, or a summer romance, we can always find connections between all the books. 🤭

Pues sí, porque yo leo hasta la lista de compras de ésta autora y porque siempre es interesante llegar a un libro por el chisme o la polémica que este ha generado 🤭, no obstante de una vez les adelanto que no entendí la controversia porque tampoco es que el libro sea tan fuerte, puedo decir que he leído cosa más subidas de tono 😂, aún así algo que fue bastante interesante en toda ésta lectura fue notar como Ali estaba intentando cosa nuevas, y siempre voy aplaudir cuando la autora hacen ésto a pesar de ya haber encontrado su “fórmula mágica”, pero antes de seguir añadiendo detalles mejor vamos a la reseña completa de Caída Libre 🏊🏻‍♀️.

Scarlett Vandermeer apuntaba a ser la saltadora en trampolín más destacada de su grupo, sin embargo un giro de los acontecimientos y una grave lesión que casi le cuesta toda su carrera, la han llevado a un papel más secundario en donde ha tenido que enfrentar a su propia autocrítica, sumado a todo el esfuerzo que requiere sacar una carrera universitaria destacable para poder especializarse en el área que desea, Scarlett ha llegado a la conclusión que de momento no puede adentrarse en una relación romántica, por lo que rehuye de cualquier interacción de éste tipo, sobre todo porque en cuanto a la sexualidad, hay gustos que parecen avergonzarla un poco.

Lukas Blomqvist da la impresión de ser el mejor en todo lo que hace, no solo es el campeón mundial y capitán del equipo de natación, sino que parece que sus estudios también van de maravilla, y aunque su relación de varios años acaba de terminar ésto parece no mortificarlo demasiado, sobre todo porque ha terminado en buenos términos, por lo que cuando aparece la oportunidad de mantener una relación meramente sexual con Scarlett, con quien casualmente comparte los mismos gustos no convencionales en ésta área, él no lo duda ni por un segundo. Aunque todo empieza como un trato casual, pronto se convierte en un romance que puede llegar a ser para toda la vida 💖.

Vamos a partir ésta reseña teniendo en cuenta que este libro realmente lo leí en Abril, ya sé que han pasado muchos meses pero la razón de no hacer una reseña en ese momento es que necesitaba dejar descansar esa lectura, la opinión que tuve de ésta historia en ese momento no se parece a la que voy a darles hoy por diversas razones, pero la principal es que en ese momento el libro recién acababa de publicarse y estaba envuelto en una gran polémica, la razón principal de ella es que en ésta historia tenemos prácticas sexuales no convencionales o para ser más específica BDSM, pero si me preguntas a mí realmente es un libro que intenta incluir dichas prácticas y que en el proceso se queda algo corto.

Por lo que, desde mi punto de vista no entiendo porqué se generó toda ésta controversia, asumo que quizás la comunidad lectora de Ali no estaba preparada para leer algo de éste estilo, o les sorprendió que ella quisiera experimentar con éste tema, o tal vez la comunidad se alarmó en vano, porque ya les digo yo que no es el libro más explícito de Ali Hazelwood, ese puesto lo sigue teniendo No es Amor 😂.

Y justamente por el tema de la incorporación de dichas prácticas sexuales es por donde me gustaría empezar, la realidad es que la historia gira en torno a un acuerdo sexual entre dos personas que comparten los mismos gustos en ésta área, donde se explora la dinámica dominante y sumiso, obviamente todo consensuado. Decir que el libro indaga más allá de ésto que acabo de describir, es exagerar porque en ningún momento se sale de ésta línea, de hecho uno de los fallos de la historia y que se ha convertido en una crítica objetiva, es que cuando la relación entre los protagonistas comienza (que lo hace a través de éste acuerdo sexual) se nombra una lista de lo que quieren experimentar y de lo que no quieren experimentar, para conocer qué está permitido y que no entre ambos, dicha lista nunca aparece en el libro, o sea el lector no conoce qué se escribió en ella, por lo que al final queda la duda de si realmente hubo una investigación profunda detrás de éste libro, y hasta qué punto se exploró en la historia.

Recuerdo que cuando terminé de leer el libro lo primero que pensé fue “la gente se alarmó por nada”, pero hoy día ya dejando que la lectura descansara y construyendo ahora sí una opinión más solida, la conclusión a la que llego es que simplemente este era un libro donde la autora estaba intentando explorar temas nuevos y midiendo la receptividad de su comunidad lectora, y no solo por la incorporación de nuevos elementos sexuales, sino también porque es el primer romance deportivo que ella escribía.

Además de ésto tenemos por primera vez en uno de sus libros, una protagonista femenina que asiste a terapia psicológica, algo fundamental para cualquier deportista y más para aquellos que sufrieron algún tipo de accidente deportivo que derivó en una lesión y todo un tratamiento médico. Así que existiendo tantos elementos nuevos que la autora quiso explorar, la audiencia decidió irse por el más escandaloso y con ese se quedaron, trayendo popularidad para el libro, eso no hay que negarlo, cuando la verdad es que la autora tiene historias muchísimo mejores que no alcanzaron tal nivel de popularidad generada por una controversia.

Y a éste punto también quería llegar, porque si bien la historia es entretenida no es la mejor de la autora, cuando acabe la lectura recuerdo que mi sensación fue de “¡Ah! Okey, está entretenida” pero no fue algo trascendental en mi vida como lo han sido otros libros de Ali Hazelwood, de hecho al día de hoy me cuesta recordar el nombre de los protagonistas, algo que no me pasa con sus otros libros, por lo que eso es sinónimo para mí de que la historia es un poquito irrelevante, y personalmente creo que se debe al uso excesivo de contenido sexual, el cual yo no sentía que estuviese en sintonía con la tónica del libro, es como que sentía que la historia era una línea entera de color rosado, y de repente tenía brochazos toscos de negro.

Aún así creo que el mejor acierto de éste libro son sus protagonistas, y que la forma en que está escrito hizo que yo me adentrara tanto en la historia que no ví quien iba a ser el personaje antagonista hasta que ya fue demasiado obvio, por un momento olvidé que los libros de Ali siempre tienen un antagonista, y no lo recordé sino hasta que ya estaban casi por revelarmelo, y definitivamente eso se debe a la buena narrativa que llevó el libro de principio a fin, además de la complejidad con la que escribió a sus personajes que hicieron que me interesara más en ellos que en descubrir quién era el villano o la villana.

Dentro de toda una historia llena de intentos de explorar cosas nuevas, también encontramos destellos de la “fórmula mágica” de Ali, principalmente en sus protagonistas que no se salen del molde que ella ya tiene bien definido. Algo muy importante es que hay un cameo bien interesante de dos personajes muy queridos para la comunidad lectora fan de Ali Hazelwood y sé que Lucas y Scarlett tienen también un cameo en uno de los libros recientemente publicados por la autora, así que de ésta forma vemos la construcción de todo el universo de historias de Ali, no importa si es un romance deportivo, romance científico o un romance de verano siempre podemos encontrar conexiones entre todos los libros 🤭.
