As you know from my last post in this beautiful community, for some time now I decided to tell you my opinion about my favorite book saga, The Dark Tower, written by Stephen King. I have already shared my opinion on the first two books The Gunslinger and The Drawing of the Three, both incredible books. Today is the turn of the third book of the wonderful western with science fiction of the King.
Synopsis
The world has moved, as have Roland, Eddie and Susannah, the newly formed ka-tet. They are found in the Outer World moving along the coast of the Eastern Sea. In this arduous journey they find the way to the Inner World through the twelve mysterious Beams or pillars that unite the world, with The Dark Tower being as its center. They find the Bear Beam, whose guardian is the cyborg bear called Shardik, the technological replacement for the original guardian.
The three of them are skilled gunslingers so they manage to face the difficulties of the cumbersome journey, however Roland, who was the most calm of all, begins to suffer a strong dilemma around Jake. "Is he alive or dead?". Roland left him to die on those train tracks when he was chasing the Man in Black, there was no doubt about that. But when he visited New York in 1977 he managed to stop what would have been his death in that world... At the same time Jake wonders, "Am I alive or dead?", generating a paranoia that affects him more and more...
Despite everything Roland would find the key that would be revealed (but not to the gunslinger) just as Jake would also find his own key in a rose...
The ka-tet would finally be completed when they find an intelligent billy-bumbler named Oy, and thus they would continue their path to the Tower. But of course the journey will not be easy once they reach the town of Lud, where they must confront new enemies, such as Tick-Tock Man, Blaine The Mono and The Ageless Stranger...
The wonders of Middle World
This is without a doubt one of the most entertaining books of all. Drama, fiction, western, all in a dizzying mix of events that makes you understand the world of our beloved gunslinger on a much deeper level. We see how a world that once used to be full of magic has now succumbed to the revolution of technology so that what used to be mystical is now just tinny without emotion.
However, there are certain things that still retain their magic, such as the Beams that keep the world connected, as well as the creatures that wander around. They also present us with this enigma between life and death as well as the possibility that there are other worlds apart from this one, which is that analogy between parallel universes that despite being more of a science fiction premise, it is approached from the point of view of more of a psychological thriller with a magical aura.
Of course we are talking about a Stephen King story so you have to be willing to read things that can be deeply disturbing and that will obviously be out of the norm. The fact that there are keys that they must find by solving some kind of puzzles doesn't sound bad at all, but then when you read what Susannah must do to save Jake... It is not a reading for everyone since the idea is not even something that anyone can think of. It may even be uncanny but that is the world of this great author. Besides, that disturbing subject is developed more fully in later books which makes everything even worse. To read something from King you have to have the stomach.
On the other hand many other characters are introduced, each one more interesting than the other and also a small part of what will later be seen with greater clarity. It is what I like to call Stephen King's Multiverse, since in this extensive saga of books almost all the stories created by the author so far are united into one. Everything is connected or as Roland would say, everything follows the path of the beam. From this moment we will begin to see characters who, although they may appear with a relatively different name, are protagonists of other stories, other books. They make a comeback not only because it unifies the world but they also have to contribute something to this particular story.
Far from being a kind of cameo, they are key pieces to advance on the path to the Tower. Although the most important of all does not appear yet, not in this book...
I must also say that the Middle World despite having a clear inspiration in the beautiful world of Tolkien, has King's unique touch. This author created an apocalyptic dystopian world where, despite being a civilization that had little to do with the real world, it is proposed that an era existed where the idea was to make it look more like the "real", to be more modern, with more technology and therefore, with less magic. But this was the downfall of Middle World which has been devastated. This world was every other world support, so if it succumbs, the consequences will be an absolute catastrophe.
This world captivates you with its particular characteristics, a mix of everyday life and fiction, although it should be noted that the influence is somewhat outdated (remember that these books were written at different times, in this case it was published in 1991). It leaves you wanting to know more about how it works and the explanation is great because it is not a consecutive timeline. There are different jumps between eras where they explain how everything works, then the information is completed between the past and the present, making the narrative entertaining. In that way King managed to make the book not tedious despite the large amount of details.
I must also highlight the beautiful concept of ka-tet. This is a group of people united by ka, that is destiny, so their lives are forever intertwined, forming a deep, pure and eternal sentimental bond. This is what makes the relationship they have with each other despite adversity remain united by that special bond, that transcendental connection that helps them move forward. This "ka-tet, of many, one" is our group of protagonists, Roland, Eddie, Susannah, Jake and Oy who together will face whatever is to come and will have a love so pure and sincere that will make you love every moment they are together.
If you look closely, this is a concept that, although King does not give it this specific name, is clearly seen in the Losers Club in It. One more reference to the connection between stories.
This saga is really worth reading because of how wonderful it is. Come along with Roland and his ka-tet to reach the Dark Tower.

Como sabrán por mi último post en esta hermosa comunidad, desde hace un tiempo decidí hablarles de mi saga favorita de libros, La Torre Oscura, escrita por Stephen King. Ya les he compartido mi opinión sobre los dos primeros libros El Pistolero y La Llegada de Los Tres, ambos libros increíbles. Hoy es el turno del tercer libro de la maravillosa western con ciencia ficción del Rey.
Sinopsis
El mundo se ha movido, así como Roland, Eddie y Susannah, el recién conformado ka-tet. Se encuentran en el Mundo Exterior moviéndose por la costa del Mar del Oriente. En dicho recorrido arduo encuentran la vía hacia el Mundo Interior a través de los doce misteriosos Haces o pilares que unen al mundo, estando en su centro La Torre Oscura. Ellos encuentran el Haz del Oso, cuyo guardián es el oso cyborg Shardik, el remplazo tecnológico del guardián original.
Los tres son pistoleros diestros por lo que logran afrontar las dificultades del engorroso trayecto, sin embargo Roland quien era el más sereno de todos comienza a padecer una fuerte disyuntiva entorno a Jake. "¿Está vivo o muerto?". Roland lo dejó morir en aquellas vías del tren cuando perseguía al Hombre de Negro, de eso no había duda. Pero cuando visitó Nueva York en 1977 logró detener lo que sería su muerte en ese mundo... Al mismo tiempo Jake se pregunta, "¿Estoy vivo o muerto?", generando una paranoia que cada vez lo afecta más...
A pesar de todo Roland encontraría la llave que sería revelada (pero no al pistolero) así como Jake también encontraría su propia llave en una rosa...
El ka-tet finalmente se completaría cuando encuentran a un inteligente bilibrambo llamado Acho, y así continuarían su camino a la Torre. Pero por supuesto el trayecto no será nada sencillo una vez que llegan al pueblo de Lud, donde deberán confrontar nuevos enemigos, como el Señor Tic-Tac, Blaine El Mono y El extraño sin edad...
Las maravillas de Mundo Medio
Este es sin duda un de los libros más entretenidos de todos. Drama, ficción, western, todo en una mezcla de acontecimientos vertiginosa que hace que comprendas en un nivel mucho más profundo el mundo de nuestro querido pistolero. Vemos cómo un mundo que antaño solía estar lleno de magia ahora a sucumbido a la revolución de la tecnología por lo que aquello que solía ser místico ahora es solo hojalata sin emoción.
Sin embargo hay ciertas cosas que todavía conservan su magia como los Haces que mantienen al mundo conectado, así como las criaturas que van vagando por los alrededores. También nos presentan ese enigma entre la vida y la muerte así como la posibilidad de que existan otros mundos aparte de este, lo cual es esa analogía entre universos paralelos que a pesar de ser una premisa más de ciencia ficción es abordada desde el punto de vista más de thriller psicológico con un aura mágica.
Por supuesto estamos hablando de una historia de Stephen King por lo que debes estar dispuesto a leer cosas que pueden ser profundamente inquietantes y que evidentemente se saldrán de la norma. Es que el hecho de que hayan llaves que deberán encontrar resolviendo unas especies de acertijos no suena nada mal, pero luego cuando lees lo que debe hacer Susannah para salvar a Jake... No es una lectura para cualquiera puesto que la idea ni siquiera se le ocurriría a cualquiera. Puede incluso ser desagradable pero así es el mundo de este gran autor. Aparte, esa cuestión inquietante se desarrolla más ampliamente en libros posteriores lo que hace que todo sea aún peor. Para leer a King hay que tener estómago.
Por otro lado son introducidos muchos otros personajes cada uno más interesante que el otro y además se unos asoma una pequeña parte de lo que más adelante se apreciará con una mayor claridad. Es lo que a mí me gusta llamar El Multiverso de Stephen King, puesto que en esta extensa saga de libros casi todas las historias creadas por el autor hasta el momento se unen en una sola. Todo tiene conexión o como diría Roland, todo sigue el camino del haz. A partir de este momento comenzaremos a ver personajes que si bien pueden aparecer con un nombre relativamente distinto, son protagonistas de otras historias, otros libros. Ellos hacen una reaparición no solo por lo que unifica al mundo sino que también tienen que aportar algo a ésta historia en particular.
Lejos de ser una especie de cameo son piezas claves para avanzar en el camino hacia la Torre. Aunque el más importante de todos no aparece aún, no en este libro...
También debo destacar que el Mundo Medio a pesar de tener una clara inspiración en el hermoso mundo de Tolkien, tiene el toque único de King. Este autor creó un mundo distópico apocalíptico donde a pesar de ser una civilización que poco tenía que ver con el mundo real se plantea que existió una era donde la idea fue hacer que se pareciera más a lo "real", que fuera más moderno, con más tecnología y por tanto, con menos magia. Pero esto fue la perdición de Mundo Medio que ha quedado devastado. Este mundo era el soporte de todos por lo que si llega a sucumbir las consecuencias serán una absoluta catástrofe.
Este mundo te cautiva por sus particulares características mezcla de lo cotidiano y la ficción, aunque cabe aclarar que la influencia es un tanto desactualizada (recordemos que estos libros fueron escritos en diferentes épocas, en este caso fue publicado en 1991). Te deja con esas ganas de saber más sobre cómo funciona y la explicación es genial porque no es una línea de tiempo consecutiva. Hay diferentes saltos entre épocas donde explican el funcionamiento de todo, entonces la información se va completando entre lo pasado y el presente, haciendo la narración entretenida. Así King logró que a pesar de la gran cantidad de detalles el libro no sea tedioso.
Además debo destacar al hermoso concepto del ka-tet. Esto es un grupo de personas unidas por el ka, es decir, el destino, por lo que sus vidas quedan compenetradas para siempre formando un vínculo sentimental profundo, puro y eterno. Esto es lo que hace que la relación que poseen entre sí a pesar de las adversidades se mantenga unida por ese lazo especial, esa conexión trascendental que los ayuda a seguir adelante. Este "ka-tet, de muchos, uno" es nuestro grupo de protagonistas, Roland, Eddie, Susannah, Jake y Acho que unidos enfrentarán lo que sea que esté por venir y tendrán un amor tan puro y sincero que hará que ames cada momento que se encuentren juntos.
Si te fijas bien, este es un concepto que aunque King no le otorga este nombre, se ve claramente en el Club de los Perdedores en It. Una referencia más a la conexión entre historias.
De verdad esta saga vale la pena leerla por lo maravillosa que es. Acompaña a Roland y su ka-tet hacia la Torre Oscura.
