It's been a while since I reviewed a book, so after rereading what I consider a great book in the genre of horror or gothic fiction, reading is something I like very much and although I don't do it so often it's one of my favorite hobbies, getting into a story and feeling each one of its emotions, that's what happened to me with this book called: The Woman in Black.
▪️Synopsis.▪️
Cuando el joven abogado Arthur Kipps recibe el encargo de viajar a un pueblo remoto del interior rodeado de marismas brumosas para asistir al entierro de una anciana no puede ni imaginar lo que le espera, y sólo ve en ello la posibilidad de progresar profesionalmente, lo que quizá le permita finalmente casarse. Mientras intenta poner orden en el legado de la difunta, empieza a ver una extraña aparición y se introduce en una historia que los lugareños intentan olvidar: la de una madre soltera que tuvo que dejar a su hijo al cuidado de su hermana, pero el niño se hundió en las marismas mientras su madre biológica lo miraba todo impotente desde su ventana. Según dice la tradición, siempre que alguien ve al espectro de la madre, muere un niño, y a la larga Arthur Kipps comprobará en su propia familia hasta qué punto esa tradición es cierta.
When young lawyer Arthur Kipps is asked to travel to a remote inland village surrounded by misty marshes to attend the funeral of an old woman, he cannot imagine what awaits him, and sees in it only the possibility of professional advancement, which may allow him to finally get married. As he tries to tidy up the deceased's legacy, he begins to see a strange apparition and is introduced to a story that the locals try to forget: that of a single mother who had to leave her child in the care of her sister, but the child sank into the marshes while his biological mother watched helplessly from her window. Tradition has it that whenever someone sees the specter of the mother, a child dies, and eventually Arthur Kipps will find out in his own family just how true that tradition is.
Su historia quizá te parezca conocida debido a que en 2012 se estreno “La dama de negro” la cual es una adaptación de este libro, respecto a la película puedo decir que es bastante buena y la vi antes de leer el libro así que no sabría explicarles como me sentí cuando me entere de la existencia del libro jajaja. Escrito por Susan Hill y publicado por primera vez en 1983, la mujer de negro tiene una historia basada en la época con una trama con toques bastante clichés que crean lo que a mi parecer es una historia que pasara generación a generación a pesar de lo sencillo que suena su nombre.
Its story may seem familiar to you because in 2012 was released "The Lady in Black" which is an adaptation of this book, regarding the movie I can say that it is pretty good and I saw it before reading the book so I could not explain how I felt when I found out about the existence of the book hahaha. Written by Susan Hill and published for the first time in 1983, the woman in black has a story based on the time with a plot with cliché touches that create what I think is a story that will pass from generation to generation despite how simple its name sounds.
A mi opinión personal me parece un libro bastante entretenido, al comienzo tiene muchos indicios de terror pero luego se vuelve una brutal historia de fantasmas, con una historia que te envuelve tanto que te da tristeza saber que pronto va a terminar, ya que resulta ser un libro bastante breve y que puede leerse con agilidad; además de que no tiene puntos vacíos donde sientes que la historia te aburre porque se mantiene interesante durante toda la novela, además de que va guiándote a un desenlace que, por lo menos A MI, no es para nada predecible hasta que tienes que leerlo. Un plus que tengo de este libro es que gracias a una tia que lo había comprado hace un tiempo tuve la dicha de leerlo en físico, sin dudas una experiencia fenomenal porque si ya leer en digital es un momento agradable, poder sentir las hojas y el olor característico de este lo hace una experiencia aun más adictiva.
In my personal opinion I find it a very entertaining book, at the beginning it has many hints of terror but then it becomes a brutal ghost story, with a story that involves you so much that makes you sad to know that soon it will end, as it turns out to be a fairly short book and can be read with agility; plus it has no empty points where you feel that the story bores you because it stays interesting throughout the novel, plus it is guiding you to a denouement that, at least to me, is not at all predictable until you have to read it. A plus I have of this book is that thanks to an aunt who had bought it some time ago I had the joy of reading it in physical format, undoubtedly a phenomenal experience because if reading in digital is already a pleasant moment, being able to feel the leaves and the characteristic smell of this one makes it an even more addictive experience.
Escribir es un arte y en mi opinión Susan Hill es una artista con todas sus letras, cada escena esta descrita con el mayor de los cuidados para que no te pierdas ni el mínimo detalle, un dato curioso es que las descripciones de las apariciones o de ciertas escenas me dieron incluso más miedo que la escena en sí y es que de haber sido yo la protagonista de esta historia, simplemente no hubiera historia jajajaja porque me hubiera ido a la primera advertencia de los lugareños.
Writing is an art and in my opinion Susan Hill is an artist with all her letters, each scene is described with the greatest of care so that you do not miss even the smallest detail, a curious fact is that the descriptions of the apparitions or certain scenes gave me even more fear than the scene itself and is that if I had been the protagonist of this story, I simply would not have story hahahaha because I would have gone to the first warning of the locals.

Con respecto a la película, presenta una historia un poco diferente a lo que se encuentra en el libro. Luego de leer el libro, vi la película nuevamente y sentí que había más material que aprovechar, aun así, la disfruté. Claramente le agregaron todo el “encanto de Hollywood” apariciones dramáticas, un incendio, hasta la forma sutil de presentar la muerte de los niños en el pueblo. Susan Hill participo en la creación de la película y sigo sin entender porque permitió tantas modificaciones a la historia, siento que el final del libro me gusto mucho más pero ya este también dependía del resto de la trama ya que cambiaron cosas algo importantes, como el tema de la familia de nuestro protagonista quien en el libro vuelve a casarse tras la muerte de su esposa e hijo, pero que en la película pues… no llega a suceder porque simplemente nunca conocemos a su esposa. Sin embargo, disfruté mucho la película y decidí tomarlo como dos historias distintas para no caer en más comparaciones.
Regarding the movie, it presents a slightly different story than what is in the book. After reading the book, I watched the movie again and felt there was more material to draw from, still, I enjoyed it. Clearly they added all the "Hollywood charm" dramatic appearances, a fire, even the subtle way of presenting the death of the children in the town. Susan Hill participated in the creation of the movie and I still don't understand why she allowed so many modifications to the story, I feel that I liked the ending of the book much more but it also depended on the rest of the plot since they changed some important things, like the theme of the family of our protagonist who in the book remarries after the death of his wife and son, but in the movie... it never happens because we simply never meet his wife. However, I really enjoyed the movie and decided to take it as two different stories so as not to fall into more comparisons.

Jamas habia sentido terror semejante, jamás me habían temblado tanto las rodillas ni se me habia helado la sangre, mi corazon nunca había sufrido semejante sacudida, como si estuviera a punto de saltar por mi boca seca para a continuación, golpear mi pecho como el martillo at yunque jamás había sido presa de un temor, un horror y un miedo al mal tan intensos."
"The combination of the peculiar and isolated place with the sudden appearance of the woman and her frightening expression frightened me. I had never felt such terror, never had my knees trembled so much, never had my blood run cold, never had my heart suffered such a jolt, as if it was about to jump out of my dry mouth and then hit my chest like a hammer on an anvil, never had I been seized by such an intense fear, horror and dread of evil."

En muchas ocasiones me ha frustrado que las adaptaciones cinematográficas de un libro cambie tantas cosas dentro de la trama, pero supongo que si la historia es disfrutable en un formato u otro, puede ser perdonado (se me ocurre, por ejemplo, toda la saga de Harry Potter, jeje).
La sinopsis suena interesante y los detalles adicionales que contaste capturó finalmente mi atención para darle una oportunidad a este libro, me agrada que aunque tenga matices de terror y suspenso, sea fácil de leer.
