¡Hola, Hive!
Espero se encuentren muy bien y sanos. Hoy estoy muy contenta porque vuelvo con una nueva reseña literaria luego de un tiempito largo en el que estuve ocupada con tantas cosas :’(. Esta vez reseñaré la tercera parte de una serie de libros de los que he compartido su respectiva reseña anteriormente con ustedes. Se trata de Hasta La Raíz, el más reciente libro de la serie ‘Detectives de Oregón’ del autor B. J. Castillo.
Así que basta de introducción, empecemos con lo que importa:

I hope you are all well and healthy. Today I’m very happy because I'm back with a new book review after a long time when I was busy with so many things :'(. This time I will review the third part of a series of books that I have previously shared with you. This is Hasta La Raíz, the most recent book in the 'Oregon Detectives' series by author B. J. Castillo.
So enough of the introduction, let’s get started with what matters:

Sinopsis:
Unirse a una hermandad era una de las mejores formas de encontrar un hogar lejos de casa. Al menos esto decía el programa de enganche a las jóvenes universitarias de primer año. Puras mentiras. Alguien ha irrumpido en la hermandad Alpha Chi Omega y atacado a dos de sus integrantes: violó y asesinó brutalmente a una de ellas y a la otra, la dejó en coma tras arrojarla por unas escaleras mientras se daba a la fuga. Synopsis:
Joining a sorority was one of the best ways to find a home away from home. At least that's what the hook-up program said to young college freshman girls. Bullshit. Someone has broken into the Alpha Chi Omega sorority and attacked two of its members, brutally raping and murdering one of them and leaving the other in a coma after throwing her down a flight of stairs as he fled. When she awakens, she asks Cristina Simms, now a Corvallis police detective, to take her statement of facts, which may include the identity of the mysterious attacker. At first the story seems to reveal nothing more than sorority intrigue. However, at some point, Cristina discovers that there is more than just darkness beneath the surface.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Alcides Rowe, a taciturn man haunted by a case from the past, finds himself in an intense investigation to find out the origin and motivation of the sole suspect in the Alpha Chi Omega sorority crime, whose corpse they later find buried under the roots of a tree.

Review:
Al igual que en la novela anterior, la dinámica es la misma: una serie de asesinatos por parte de un autor anónimo y dos agentes tras la pista de este último misterioso.
Todo comienza a partir del despiadado asesinato de una de las miembros de la hermandad Alpha Chi Omega en casa de dicha hermandad. Debo admitir que todo empezó por muy buen camino, en seguida me enganchó la escena en la que un extraño entre las sombras cometía un asesinato y cómo salió impune de allí habiendo completado su cometido.
El asunto policiaco empieza justo después de esa escena sin escrúpulos. Se nos presenta al detective protagonista Alcides Rowe y, por último, a la detective Cristina Simms. De allí en adelante todo se va moviendo rápido y el lector se mueve adelante y atrás mediante las líneas de tiempo que el autor creó para contar la historia.
Pero… ¡claro que hay un pero!
Aparte del conflicto principal, también se presentaron otros temas en la historia que pensé que se le sacaría el máximo con el pasar de las páginas, pero fue decepcionante ver cómo no se explotó como yo pensé.
El tema de las fraternidades creí que sería más emocionante porque siempre ha sido un tema divertido, ya sea en el cine o en la literatura, pero en esta novela me pareció que le faltó mucha más emoción a este punto. No me quejo tanto porque en la trama estuvieron muy involucradas las fraternidades y se dejó ver en esplendor sus lados oscuros. Por ese lado, sí estuve contenta porque el autor acertó poniendo como foco en la historia el lado oscuro de las fraternidades, de sus requisitos para ser parte de ellas y de jóvenes desquiciados por encajar en círculos sociales.
Ahora que lo pienso mejor, creo que a lo que le faltó chispa fue a la novela como tal… No sé, es la primera vez que me deja una sensación de aburrimiento una novela de este autor, las otras mantuvieron su ritmo y el gancho, pero con esta no fue el caso.
Aunque el tema de la investigación policiaca y el suspense estuvieron bien presentes, no hicieron que me cautivara la historia. Al final de la lectura quedé con esa sensación de que al libro le faltó algo más.
As in the previous novel, the dynamic is the same: a series of murders by an anonymous perpetrator and two agents on the trail of the mysterious latter.
It all starts with the ruthless murder of one of the members of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority at the sorority's house. I must admit that it all started off on a very good note, I was immediately hooked by the scene of a stranger in the shadows committing a murder and how he got away with it having completed his task.
The police business starts right after that unscrupulous scene. We are introduced to the lead detective Alcides Rowe and, finally, to Detective Cristina Simms. From there on everything moves fast and the reader moves back and forth through the timelines the author created to tell the story.
But... of course there is a but!
Aside from the main conflict, there were also other themes presented in the story that I thought would be brought out the most as the pages went on, but it was disappointing to see it not exploited as I thought it would be.
The fraternity theme I thought would be more exciting because it has always been a fun theme, whether in movies or literature, but in this novel I felt it lacked a lot more excitement at this point. I'm not complaining so much because the plot involved the fraternities a lot and their dark sides were shown in splendor. On that side, I was happy because the author got it right by focusing the story on the dark side of fraternities, their requirements to be part of them and young people unhinged to fit in social circles.
Now that I think about it, I think the novel as such lacked spark... I don't know, it's the first time that a novel by this author leaves me with a feeling of boredom, the others kept their rhythm and the hook, but this was not the case with this one.
Although the theme of police investigation and suspense were well present, they did not make me captivated by the story. At the end of the reading I was left with that feeling that the book lacked something more.
Cristina Simms. Ella es uno de los detectives a cargo del caso de asesinato en la fraternidad. No fue la primera vez que me encontraba con este personaje, puesto que ya la conocía desde Donde Nunca Llueve, y desde ahí me caí mal.
Ella es odiosa y ambiciosa, y es precisamente esa característica ambiciosa la que la lleva por el camino de lo corrupto. Aunque no sentí que este personaje tuviera un gran desarrollo, me gustó que la novela retrata a los personajes de una manera un tanto más real; son como sería un policía en la realidad: ni tan bueno, ni tan malo. Y, lo que me parece más importante, es que no se exagera con respecto a las ganas por resolver el caso para “hacer justicia y vengar a la víctima” como en otras obras, sino que se deja en claro que muchos de los detectives solo hacen su trabajo o se esfuerzan demás para conseguir recompensas individuales.
Alcides Rowe. Él es el detective principal a cargo del caso de las fraternidades. A lo largo de la investigación uno se da cuenta de que él ya no está en sus mejores días como detective; esto es completamente visible en su toma de decisiones y en lo poco asertivo que es con respecto al caso, pero de alguna manera lo entiendo porque tampoco se trata de un personaje tan joven, Alcides lleva sus cuántos añitos encima.
Debo admitir que este personaje tampoco fue mi favorito. Me gustó más que Cristina, sí, pero no fue muy transcendente como para atraparme. Aunque al final hay un guiño por ahí que hizo que no perdiera la fe por completo con este personaje, creo que puede venir la justicia para él en otro libro.
Angela Barr. Ella es una testigo clave para el desarrollo del caso. ¿Qué más puedo decir sobre ella…? ¡Ah, sí! Fue el personaje que más odié… No vale la pena decir más sobre ella.
Con este personaje me di cuenta de que los personajes no tenían mucha voz propia en realidad, los diálogos eran muy planos muchas veces.
Los personajes principales fue quizás lo que más me desagradó de esta novela, pero hubo algo que subió un poco los puntos y fueron los personajes secundarios. Pienso que ellos tuvieron una presencia mucho más grande en la trama cada vez que aparecían que los mismos personajes principales; tenían suficiente personalidad como para invadir por completo las escenas en las que aparecían por más pequeñas que fuesen.
Cristina Simms. She is one of the detectives in charge of the fraternity murder case. This was not the first time I encountered this character, as I already knew her from Where It Never Rains, and from there I disliked her.
She is hateful and ambitious, and it is precisely that ambitious characteristic that leads her down the corrupt path. Although I didn't feel that this character had a great deal of development, I liked that the novel portrays the characters in a somewhat more realistic way; they are what a cop would be like in reality: not so good, not so bad. And, what I think is most important, is that it does not exaggerate the desire to solve the case to "do justice and avenge the victim" as in other works, but makes it clear that many of the detectives are just doing their job or going out of their way to get individual rewards.
Alcides Rowe. He is the lead detective in charge of the fraternity case. Throughout the investigation one realizes that he is no longer on his best days as a detective; this is completely visible in his decision making and how unassertive he is about the case, but in a way I understand it because this is not such a young character either, Alcides has his how many years on him.
I must admit that this character was not my favorite either. I liked him more than Cristina, yes, but he wasn't too transcendent to grab me. Although there is a wink at the end there that made me not lose faith completely with this character, I think justice may come for him in another book.
Angela Barr. She is a key witness to the development of the case. What more can I say about her... Oh yes, she was the character I hated the most... It's not worth saying more about her.
With this character I realized that the characters didn't really have much of a voice of their own, the dialogues were very flat a lot of the time.
The main characters was perhaps what I disliked the most about this novel, but there was something that brought up the points a bit and that was the secondary characters. I think they had a much bigger presence in the plot whenever they appeared than the main characters themselves; they had enough personality to completely invade the scenes they appeared in no matter how small they were.
Quizá ya a este punto se habrán dado cuenta de que este libro no me gustó mucho… y es cierto. Me aburrió más que nada. Aunque hay algo de entre todo que resaltó muchísimo para mí, y es que en esta novela estuvo presente ese estilo característico del autor capaz de crear escenas poniendo un cuidado minucioso en las palabras para describirlas. Cuerpos en muy mal estado, olores, escenas del crimen impactantes, etc.; mi mente voló imaginando todo aquello. Fue como una “lectura muy sensitiva”.

You may have noticed by now that I didn't like this book very much...and it's true. It bored me more than anything else. Although there is one thing that stood out for me, and that is that in this novel was present that characteristic style of the author capable of creating scenes with meticulous care in the words to describe them. Bodies in a very bad state, smells, shocking crime scenes, etc.; my mind flew imagining all that. It was like a "very sensitive read".

When there are such shortcomings, the book loses its joy, yes, it really does. You have analyzed it in a very detailed and enjoyable way. You talked about the book well. Congratulations. The dual writing style also looks very nice and I should try it sometime.
Yes, it's not the first time I've read a book that loses its spark because of some kind of shortcoming. It's sad, as sometimes the premise is very attention grabbing.
