Verity – Original Ending Spoiler Free Review

"Verity" was written by Colleen Hoover and was originally published in 2018. It has now become a bestseller as part of the rediscovering Colleen Hoover books trend that has taken over the world thanks to TikTok. She has become a global phenomenon.

I've already read two books by Colleen Hoover, "It Ends with Us" and "Ugly Love" so I thought I knew what to expect from this book. I was wrong. Sure, there is a lot of romance in this book as well, as well as dysfunctional relationships, but this book is a thriller. Or it is a romance with a thriller twist. Either way, it is pretty different from her other two book that I've read.

This book follows Lowen Ashleigh who is a struggling author. Her books are selling mildly well, but thanks to unfortunate events in her life she is on the brink of a financial catastrophe. Just before it happens she is saved by an amazing opportunity. She is hired by Jeremy Crawford, the husband of the author Verity Crawford, to finish writing three criminal novel in a well-established book series. Verity Crawford is a famous author and her books series is extremely popular. But Verity herself has been through an accident and can no longer write. So now the job of finishing her successful series falls onto Ashleigh. Obviously an amazing opportunity which every author will die for.

Unfortunately, obviously, getting the job done is not going to be that simple. Ashleigh goes to the Crawford house in order to sort through Verity notes, hopping that she left enough behind to follow her original plan for the series. However, she gets distracted by Verity's life. Verity's and Jeremy's life has been plagued by tragedy and horrible accidents. But were they actually accidents or did were these tragedies purposefully done? Ashleigh gets caught up in the mystery of Verity's life more and more as the book unfolds along with its horrors.

I read the original ending and I can see why people are upset about it, but I actually super liked it. It is special and unique. I think a different ending might make this book blander. I guess at some point I'll read the alternative ending, but for now, I liked this ending.

Also, the book is written in a way that you just can't stop reading it. I finished the entire book in one day. I just couldn't put it down. It was so suspenseful and the mystery was so intriguing that I couldn't stop reading. I had to know what really happened and I couldn't stop until I did. It also really helps that the writing style is so compelling and easy to read. You just don't notice the time passing when you read it. It's not easy to finish a book in a day, but I didn't even notice the day going by in this case.

I am not saying that this book is a masterpiece by any means. The mystery is intriguing, but I have read better thrillers. It is a good book on its own in my opinion. Some reviewers put this book in the YA category, but I don't think that it belong in that category. First of all it has a lot of explicit sex scenes, and second of all, the tragedies in this book are very mature ones. I understand why a lot of teenage girls buy this book and end up disappointed. Family drama is hardly YA material. Still, if you want to read a romance with a twist, this is a highly recommended twist.

If you're looking for the next Colleen Hoover book to read I would put this above "Ugly Love" on your to read list, but not above "It Ends with Us". On its own it is a captivating thriller, but not one that you will remember long after finishing it, even with the twist ending.
