The book She is close and comes with a quiet foot by Venezuelan author Ricardo Azuaje, a storyteller who has earned a place in modern Latin American literature for his style, as he usually appeals to humor and irony as resources to sharpen his social criticism, has arrived in my hands like a leaf falling from a tree. In this review I will highlight three stories, the first of them is Of mutations, where the narrator with special mastery uses the everlasting allegory of "the snake that bites its own tail", therefore he presents us with a story that pushes us to reflect on the cyclical nature of time. While what at first appear to be two unconnected stories unfold, clues are left to weave together a unique structure, then the unfolding is used as a resource to merge. This technique has Julio Cortázar as its main exponent, his story The night upside down has been a reference in the world of literature of what represents a duality, which can be summarized as: "the dream within the dream". When looking with keen eyes we will notice the depth of the work, full of philosophical passages, historical references and ideological positions.
On the other hand, in Red cart there is an internal struggle regarding the protagonist's sexual identity and the dissatisfaction with the decisions made during his academic career. Besieged by his own thoughts, unhappiness and that strange feeling of loose ends, Felix drags an emotional conflict from his youth, which becomes a very heavy burden when he tries to build his future on such flimsy supports. The unfolding and the referents are effectively inserted, as the narrator invites us to tackle the pending task.
The last story in this selection is entitled Looking for his natural death, which presents stories set in the conflictive border area with Brazil, where violence, crime and delinquency have become naturalized. Each protagonist witnesses how recklessness and rash decisions lead to terrible consequences. At this point, greed, ambition and worldly pleasures overtake the senses. The tragic ending is sweetened with black humor and irony, elements that contribute to disguise unpleasant situations.
Azuaje's narrative is not simple; it requires an astute reader, attentive to every detail, especially the references, that he presents in his stories in order to understand what he tells. Such a strategy is striking because each page is relevant, the narrator tends to suggest, to present clues, while he avoids exposing directly what he knows. The author requires the complicity of his reader and I like this particularity because I feel part of the stories.

Llegó a mis manos, como una hoja que se desprende de un árbol, el libro Ella está próxima y viene con pie callado del autor venezolano Ricardo Azuaje, narrador que se ha ganado un sitial en la literatura latinoamericana moderna por su estilo ya que suele apelar al humor y la ironía, como recursos para agudizar su crítica social. En esta reseña destacaré tres cuentos, el primero de ellos es De las mutaciones, donde el narrador con especial maestría se vale de la sempiterna alegoría de "la serpiente que se muerde la cola", por lo tanto nos presenta una historia que nos empuja a reflexionar sobre la naturaleza cíclica del tiempo. Mientras transcurren lo que en principio parecen dos historias inconexas, se dejan pistas para hilvanar una estructura única, entonces se apela al desdoblamiento como recurso para fusionar. Esta técnica tiene a Julio Cortázar como su principal exponente, su relato La noche boca arriba ha sido referencia en el mundo de las letras de lo que representa una dualidad, lo que se puede resumir como: "el sueño dentro del sueño". Al mirar con ojos acuciosos notaremos la profundidad de la obra, llena de pasajes filosóficos, referentes históricos y posturas ideológicas.
Por su parte, en el Carro rojo existe una lucha interna en lo que respecta a la identidad sexual del protagonista y la insatisfacción por las decisiones tomadas durante su transitar académico. Asediado por sus propios pensamientos, infelicidad y esa extraña sensación de cabos sueltos, Félix arrastra un conflicto emocional desde su juventud, el cual se transforma en una carga muy pesada cuando pretende construir su futuro sobre soportes tan endebles. El desdoblamiento y los referentes se insertan con eficacia, en tanto el narrador nos invita al abordaje de la tarea pendiente.
El último cuento de esta selección se titula Buscando su muerte natural, allí se presentan historias enmarcadas en la conflictiva zona fronteriza con Brasil, donde la violencia, el delito y el crimen se han naturalizado. Cada protagonista es testigo de cómo la imprudencia y las decisiones precipitadas atraen terribles consecuencias. En este punto, la codicia, la ambición y los placeres mundanos trastocan los sentidos. El final trágico se edulcora con el humor negro y la ironía, elementos que contribuyen a maquillar situaciones desagradables.
La narrativa de Azuaje no es sencilla, requiere de un lector sagaz, atento a cada detalle, sobre todo a las referencias, que presenta en sus relatos para que logre comprender lo que cuenta. Tal estrategia es llamativa porque cada página resulta relevante, el narrador tiende a sugerir, a presentar indicios, en tanto evita exponer directamente lo que sabe. El autor requiere de la complicidad de su lector y tal particularidad me agrada porque me siento parte de las historias.
