Re-reading "The moon is not made of baked bread and other stories" by Laura Antillano (Eng/Esp)

I had the opportunity to reread the anthology "The moon is not made of baked bread and other stories" by Laura Antillano, here are collected several stories from eight of her most outstanding books, including the one that gives its name to this work and that won the prestigious short story award of the newspaper El Nacional in its 1977 edition. After reading this author, I perceive that she has a very particular style, her hallmark, a style that combines brief fictions of everyday topics, detailed enumerations and descriptions that, at times, are tedious or exaggerated because they slow down the pace of the narrative.

Tuve la oportunidad de releer la antología "La luna no es de pan de horno y otras historias" de Laura Antillano, aquí se recogen varios relatos de ocho de sus libros más destacados, donde se incluye el que da nombre a esta obra y que ganó el prestigioso premio de cuentos del diario El Nacional en su edición de 1977. Tras leer a esta autora percibo que posee un estilo muy particular, su sello distintivo, es un estilo que combina ficciones breves de temas cotidianos, enumeraciones detalladas y descripciones que, a veces, resultan tediosas o exageradas porque ralentizan el ritmo de la narración.

Within this collection, the story "Bambi, men don't cry" caught my attention, where the narration places us in front of a social stigma: men must repress their feelings and show themselves strong. A philosophy that accompanied the era presented in the story. It is possible to observe then a questioning, in the same way, in the deepest fabric we notice how the children's films of that time, the reference is "Bambi", are aimed at an audience with a certain maturity and criticality. This story allows us to open an interesting discussion on male sensitivity and gender identity, beyond social conventions.

Dentro de esta colección llamó mi atención el relato "Bambi, los hombres no lloran", allí la narración nos coloca de frente a un estigma social: los hombres deben reprimir sus sentimientos y mostrarse fuertes. Una filosofía que acompañaba a la época que se presenta en la historia. Se puede observar entonces un cuestionamiento, de igual forma, en la tela más profunda notamos como las películas infantiles de entonces, la referencia es "Bambi", están dirigidas a un público con cierta madurez y criticidad. Este relato permite abrir una discusión interesante sobre la sensibilidad masculina y la identidad de género, más allá de las convenciones sociales.

On the other hand, "The moon is not made of baked bread" reveals the most sensitive human fiber, the pain for the loss of a mother. A deep emptiness that seeps into the being of the protagonist. The narrative focus delicately explores the grief of an adult woman, who gradually becomes her mother by going through the same steps as her, and it is there when, through empathy, she manages to understand the reasons that guided her behavior.

Por otra parte, "La luna no es de pan de horno" nos revela la fibra humana más sensible, el dolor por la pérdida de una madre. Un vacío hondo que se cuela en el ser de la protagonista. El foco narrativo explora con delicadeza el duelo de una mujer adulta, la cual paulatinamente se convierte en su madre al transitar los mismos pasos que ella, es allí cuando, a través de la empatía, logra entender las razones que guiaron su comportamiento.

Perhaps one of the most poignant and complex aspects of the story is the difficulty of expressing love on the part of both. They were aware of the emotional connection, but did not know how to express it. Ultimately, this story fully reflects the emotional trauma of the mother's death, which then hinders any relationship with their environment.

Quizás uno de los aspectos más conmovedores y complejos del cuento es la dificultad de expresar amor por parte de ambas. Eran conscientes de la conexión afectiva, pero no sabían manifestarla. En definitiva, esta historia refleja a cabalidad el trauma emocional por la muerte de la madre, lo que luego obstaculiza toda relación con su entorno.

Finally, in "The feathers of black hens" we find an atmosphere of mystery and oppression. The figure of an absent father, shrouded in secrets, represents the fundamental thread from which the other events are woven. The definitive act of his imprisonment presents the historical context that prevailed in the society of the time and the feathers of the black hens symbolize a masking.

Por último, en "Las plumas de las gallinas negras" encontramos una atmósfera de misterio y opresión. La figura de un padre ausente, envuelto en secretos, representa el hilo fundamental de dónde se tejen los demás acontecimientos. El acto definitivo de su encarcelamiento presenta el contexto histórico que imperaba en la sociedad del entonces y las plumas de las gallinas negras simbolizan un enmascaramiento.

Laura Antillano's work is complex, she has a great command of language and her prose is enriched with poetic figures, she also deals with deep and sensitive themes. She gloats in drawing human nature in its most lurid facets, sacrificing, many times, the action to give greater relevance to the aesthetic proposal of her discourse.

La obra de Laura Antillano es compleja, tiene un gran dominio del lenguaje y su prosa se enriquece con figuras poéticas, también aborda temas profundos y sensibles. Se regodea al dibujarnos la naturaleza humana en sus facetas más escabrosas, sacrificando, muchas veces, la acción para dar mayor relevancia a la propuesta estética de su discurso.
