How to make vegan pempek

Hello vegan friends, today I will share and invite you to prepare one of the snack recipes that can be said to be simple from the original recipe, namely pempek. Why do I say simple? Because as we know that the process of making pempek usually uses fish or meat, but this time I modified it without animal ingredients or products, but with simple ingredients but the taste is no less delicious than pempek in general.

Pempek or also called empek-empek is a typical food from one of the regions in Indonesia, namely Palembang, South Sumatra. Pempek is made from wheat flour mixed with tapioca flour and with the addition of other ingredients such as mashed garlic, flavorings and salt.

In addition, to add to the delicious sensation. Pempek is served with a sauce called cuko. Cuko sauce has a sweet, sour and spicy taste, isn't that a very complete taste. Curious, stay here I will show you how to make it below.

Ingredients needed:

  • 150 grams of wheat flour
  • 300 grams of tapioca flour
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1/2 tsp Mushroom broth
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp cooking oil
  • 400 ml water.

Ingredients for cuko sauce

  • 5 pieces of red cayenne pepper
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 150 grams of brown sugar
  • 5 pieces of tamarind (dissolve)
  • 300 ml water

Complementary ingredients

  • Cucumber, cut into small cubes



How to make:


First: mix the wheat flour, mushroom broth, salt, mashed garlic, oil and finally add water. Stir well

Second: cook over low heat, stirring until the dough clumps. Then remove. Add tapioca flour. Stir until the dough can be shaped

Third: take the dough and shape it as desired. It can be oval, submarine or other. Do the same for the remaining dough

Fourth: boil water in a pan. Wait until it boils. Put the pempek that has been formed into boiling water. Boil until cooked and float. Then remove and drain

Fifth: heat the oil. Fry the pempek using medium heat, until golden brown. Remove and drain. Set aside

How to make cuko sauce


First: grind the red cayenne pepper with garlic and salt.

Second: slice the brown sugar so that it dissolves easily when cooked

Third: dissolve the tamarind with 100 ml of water. Remove the seeds.

Fourth: mix all the ingredients in a pan, namely the ground spices, brown sugar, tamarind solution and water. Stir well. Cook until boiling and cooked. Don't forget to check the taste

Serving suggestions

Prepare your serving dish. Cut the pempek into small pieces so that it is easy to eat. Then pour over the cuko sauce. Add other toppings such as diced fresh cucumber. The pempek is ready to eat.
