A Very Good Day to All My Dear Friends!
How are you all doing today? This is a festive time for Sri Lankans, and with it comes the preparation of many delightful traditional treats. Among them is the beloved Sri Lankan Steamed Rice Cake — soft, delicate, and subtly sweet. This traditional dish, made primarily from rice flour, has been cherished across generations. It brings out the classic taste of rice flour and is often paired with coconut milk and sweeteners such as sugar or jaggery to enhance its flavor. It can also be served as part of a sweet assortment. The steaming process gives the cake a light and fluffy texture, making it both healthy and easy to digest. Whether served as a breakfast dish or during tea time, this treat adds warmth and charm to any table. So let’s take a look at how to prepare this delightful cake, step by step.
Materials Used.
200g wet rice flour.
Wheat flour 60g.
Sugar 200g.
Coconut milk 400ml.
1 Teaspoon of baking powder.
1/2 Teaspoon of baking Soda.
1/2 Teaspoon of salt.
The cooking process as follows.
First, take a mixing bowl and add the rice flour, wheat flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder. Mix all the dry ingredients well together.
Next, gradually add coconut milk while mixing continuously until you get a smooth batter with the right consistency.
Next Step – Steaming the Rice Cake Batter
Take a steamer tray and line it with a greased parchment paper or banana leaf for a traditional touch. Now pour the prepared batter into the tray and level the top gently. Place the tray into the steamer and steam the cake for about 20 to 30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean. Once steamed and fully cooked, remove it from the heat and allow it to cool slightly. Finally, cut it into desired pieces and serve..
This steamed rice cake is more than just food – it is a taste of tradition, nourishment, and the wholesome goodness of home-cooked meals.
Whether enjoyed on a quiet morning or shared with loved ones over evening tea, its warmth and delicate flavor are sure to bring comfort to the soul.
Prepare it yourself and savor a piece of Sri Lanka’s rich culinary heritage. Why not give it a try in your own kitchen too? With that, I’ll say goodbye for today. Wishing you all a wonderful day!
