The last year's festival dance competition was a real headliner, with two big contenders, Mendeleev and Dalton, facing each other in an exhilarating display of talent, culture, and school spirit. There was great anticipation in the air as each class readied itself to give an ace performance on center stage to represent the festivals that are so close and dear to the culture of Filipinos.

Mendeleev was a sight to behold, so full of energy and pride for the coasts and their Lapyahan Festival presentation. Dalton represented the world-famous Sinulog Festival with an impeccable array of religious devotion and rhythmic movements. For this year's competition, the judges included Ms. Reil, Sir Isgani, and Sir Mark John-names popular enough to somehow elevate the event in terms of its credibility and prestige. The winner was announced after a marvelous presentation of the two events, amidst the loud cheer of their camp.

Mendeleev's Lapyahan Festival: A Coastal Heritage Celebration

It was a stroke of genius on Mendeleev's part to introduce the Lapyahan Festival, so imbued in the traditions of coastal communities. To begin with, the term "Lapyahan" means "shoreline," and thus immediately sets in tones as to what this festival is about: touting the beauty of the sea and its bounty. His performance captured that on stage, whipping the entire venue into a kaleidoscopic seaside village in all its colors and glory.

Their costumes were Improvise, but create a visual connection to the sea. Some of the dancers glided across, with movements evocative of the waves' ebb and flow, while others portrayed fishermen casting nets or women collecting seashells. The choreography was a mix of traditional folk dances with modern interpretation that held the audience's attention right from the commencement to the very end. The music, too, was an understated but effective complement: selected to represent the ocean-like sounds of rhythmic beats echoing wave crashes and seabirds crying.

Though he did not bring home the top prize, Mendeleev's performance was a witness to their dedication and ingenuity. The rendition of Lapyahan Festival was not just a dance; it was a tribute to hardworking coastal communities that depend their livelihoods on the sea. Pride and passion the dancers infused with the performance made it very memorable during the competition.

Dalton's Sinulog Festival: A Display of Faith and Merriment

Dalton's decision to portray the Sinulog Festival was indeed ambitious and bold, knowing that the Sinulog is one of the most popular festivals in the Philippines. It is an annual grand festival held in Cebu that pays homage to the Santo Niño, which literally means the child Jesus, and a grand parade of dance, music, and religious homage to the child Jesus are some of the main attractions. Dalton's performance did justice to this iconic festival, capturing the vibrancy and spirit of Sinulog.

The dancers were clothed in colorful, nicely designed costumes, moving as one to the beat of drums and native instruments. The choreography was quite complex, with fast movements; it was a traditional Sinulog dance-movements consisting of two steps forward and one step backward-to represent how the Filipino goes through life. I must say that Dalton's dancers performed with such precision and energy that the audience couldn't help being drawn into the rhythm of the performance.

What set Dalton's performance apart was their ability to portray the spiritual significance of Sinulog. It wasn't just a dance; it's the story behind the dance. The facial expressions and movement of the dancers showed how religious and paying respect they were to the Santo Niño, and that reminded everyone that Sinulog is not just a festival; it is a celebration of faith. This sentimental attachment appealed to the judges and the audience alike, which ultimately secured Dalton's victory in the race.

The Judges' Decision: No Easy Task

The panel of judges had a tough job, with Ms. Reil, Sir Isgani, and Sir Mark John having to go through two really brilliant performances. Each of the performances had qualities of its own which could see it through as the best. The basis for the judging included choreography, costume design, cultural authenticity, and overall impact-all areas Mendeleev and Dalton were very brilliant at.

Ms. Reil, whose observation is keen enough to scrutinize even the minimal detail of an act, praised the two groups for their ingenuity and performance of said acts. She praised Mendeleev's strong cultural representation and Dalton's energy-packed performance. Sir Isgani mentioned in his speech, having a background in cultural studies, that despite changing trends and landscape, it is important to make sure that the festival remains a festival and brings something new into the field of performance. He felt that the two teams balanced out everything, but Dalton's portrayal of the Sinulog Festival had an ace in terms of emotional transmission. Sir Mark John, being actively involved with performing arts for a number of years, was more keen about the technical aspects of each of their performances. He also noticed that Dalton's dancers had perfect synchrony while the choreography of Mendeleev was innovative.

In the end, Dalton's ability to merge technical excellence with vivacity sealed the win. Their performance of the Sinulog Festival was an act of brilliance and really moved each and every one present in the audience.

Reflections on the Competition

It was a win for all, really, in this Festival Dance Competition as Dalton won the competition: a showcasing of Filipino culture and ingenuity, as well as school spirit. Both Mendeleev and Dalton indeed worked tirelessly for several weeks to prepare for the said event, and that really paid off in its performances that will surely be remembered for a very long time.

As for Mendeleev, the said presentation of their Lapyahan Festival was an opportunity to be able to show one of the less popular festivals as a way to orient eyes to the rich traditions within the realm of a coastal community. Their performance was a reminder of the beauty and importance of cultural heritage.

This victory to Dalton was proof of how much dedication and passion they had vested in that dance for this festival; it was a testament to faith, devotion in Filipino culture, as their performance really made an impression on every viewer.

Conclusion

The competition in the festival dances between Mendeleev and Dalton was not only about winning, but it was a night of culture, tradition, and talent. Both teams gave their best on stage, and in the process reminded us all of the richness of Filipino festivals. Dalton may have won the trophy, but the performance by Mendeleev's was just as laudable, and both groups have every reason to feel proud of what they pulled off. This day will be remembered for long years to come, one of the highlights of the school year when the spirit of competition and camaraderie blended together in a beautiful display of dance and culture.

It's nice to see that srnhs is still going with this competition where the classes from grade 9 showcases famous festival dances. I remembered how my class that time showcased the Panagbenga Festival. Though we didn't won, we still enjoyed the competition since it helped us build a stronger relationship together and also developed our teamwork. I am a graduate from srnhs by the way hahaha batch 2021🥰

Is Sinulog coming near the date? I forgot the actual date. The costumes are beautiful, by the way.

I really love these kind of activities. It showcases the skills and talents of the students.
