NEW EXPERIENCE UNLOCKED: COMMUNITY EXPOSURE

Hello everyone! It’s me again, Maheart 😁!

For today’s blog, I want to share to all of you my experience during our community exposure. Community exposure is part of our laboratory subject, so it is mandatory in our class. It was not a new experience for me, being exposed to communities because I have experience it when I joined Red Cross in my senior high school, but it was a new experience for me that I will perform some procedures in an actual setting where there are patients. I was excited and nervous at the same time haha. I was nervous because I will be in a community. I will meet people and I will do some procedures. I want to do my best and have my patients to be comfortable with me when I do my procedure.

To start with, I woke up early and did my thing. Then, it was a 30-minute ride going to my school. Hopefully, I was not late😅. I was excited because it is my first time to attend a community exposure, where I will practice my skills and try to deliver an accurate result to the patients with the help of our clinical instructors. We are in the medical field, so for our community exposure, our activity includes getting the vital signs of patients and blood typing.

It was a great experience to be in a community exposure. It was also fun because I was with my friends and classmates, and we were supporting each other. Our location was a high school located here in our home town.

We rode in our school bus. When we got there, we got ready and after a while we had our first patients for blood typing. Our patients were high school students but we were targeting the senior high school but they were not available. For our community exposure, it was the whole class so we our instructor divided the class by batch. As for me, I was assigned in the blood typing area.

I was happy because I know that I am good at it. I encountered some students that were new to blood typing so they would really ask questions and they were thinking that blood typing is painful. Well, I would explain to them that it is a rapid procedure and it will not hurt that much. When encountering with patients, we really need to explain the procedure so it will help them to feel at ease and be comfortable. I also encountered a person who was working in that school that did not really know what his blood type was. Thankfully, now he knows his blood type. It is really important that we know our blood type because we can use it if you need blood or you want to donate blood. There are many benefits in knowing your blood type. When we were done with our community exposure we took a picture as a whole class to wrap up our activity for that day.

It was a great experience for me because I was able to conquer my fears and have some confidence within myself when doing those procedures😊. In addition, these experiences could also help me boost my skills and be a person who is knowledgeable in my chosen field.
