Zooming In

We finally had our first two snowstorms this week after a very warm and dry November and December that brought some seriously destructive fires to my community. The snow came a day late, but at least it came. After the first storm, I was busy helping friends from the fires, but this morning, I woke up to about eight new inches and I headed out early since it was supposed to have cleared by this morning. I live in Boulder, Colorado and my favorite place to photograph after the snow is our Flatirons. They are the landmark of my hometown and you cannot really separate Boulder from the Flatirons. They are large rock formations and are named from "The First" to "The Fifth" Flatiron. The Third is the most well-known and juts prominently out from the others. This is our playground year-round.

Well, I went this morning, but the low clouds had not cleared enough for photos but I decided that because I am so excited to finally have snow, I would share some photos from our area in winter. I have been shooting landscapes the past year with my Canon 100-400mm F 4.5-5.6 L Is II. I bought this lens about a year and a half ago and I can't stop shooting with it. While the above photo is taken with a 16-35 mm lens, the following photos are shot with my telephoto lens. I love the details you can capture and the more intimate landscape with a telephoto lens. I have realized that over the last two years, I have gone from shooting wider scenes, to using my telephoto lenses about 80% of the time. Here are a few I captured last winter:

This next image is not an actual Flatiron, but another rock formation in the same area known as "Seal Rock" on a very moody day.

While the mood is very different in this one, I love that in all of these shots you can see each individual snow-covered pine tree. There are hiking trails and climbing areas throughout this entire area, and I have learned to love photographing them so much more this way. It stayed so cold here today that I am hopeful the sun will be out tomorrow morning and I can grab some shots before the snow starts to melt.

I love these rock formations and the snow on them. Makes me miss living up in Northern Canada. Beautiful work Brynn

The Flatirons have got to be one of the most under rated peaks in the US.
They look especially awesome in the winter!

Just local Boulder open space 🙂

Looks beautiful with the snow, Brynn. Hopefully I can get in a trip this Friday before the snow melts of the peaks. Happy to see you also enjoy shooting with a telephoto. I hardly touch my wide angle lens anymore. Telephoto opens many new perspectives.

It really does, I do a lot of reflection photography so I like wide-angle for that, but most everything else is with telephoto. Hope you can see the Flatirons this winter!

Stunning rock formation and beautiful photos!!

I absolutely love the Flatirons, and your photos of them are truly stunning. I'm not sure I've ever seen them snow-covered up close and personal, but your shots make me really want to! We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful state. When we woke up to that first snow after the fires, I honestly was teary-eyed, it was such a wonderful relief. Love our beautiful state and I know that as awful as the fires are, there will always be regrowth. Homes and lives will be restored. There is room for hope.

wow those rocks look so nice in the snow! Love the Second through Fourth Flatiron shot the most!
Telephoto is a very underrated lens in the landscape photographers bag

I never thought that the snow will melt as soon as the sun shines in your place. I have always thought that winter season will always be snowy and that only in spring will the snow be gone. Stay warm and take care always. Thsose are very good shots and I can;t imagine my self living in that kind of cold

I love the pictures, it gave more insight to the writeup.. Thumbsup

Wow, some great conditions, beautifully captured. They are all stunning but I think that third one is my favorite. So much depth with that mist😍
