Cleaning up the winter mess

Echeveria split rosette 12.jpg

I have been doing some spring cleaning on the balcony today. Many of the pots, especially cacti, had to be moved away from the fence to avoid being flooded by the rain. Today they went back to their summer spot where they spend most of the time.
I checked the pots, cleaned the dry leaves from around, found one casualty and one with few buds on already.

Some other smaller plants (I will take care of the bigger ones another day) were also inspected. Most of the succulents had to have the dry leaves removed, some will need repotting this year too.

This is some type of Echeveria I guess that I never managed to get a proper ID for. It doesn't really matter, it's still pretty cool :)

I grew this one from a single leaf and it is already a few years old, though still pretty small (they have a hard time with me sometimes). It looks pretty cool with the stem being exposed like that and splitting in to two. And the larger rosette decided to split again. They would normally grow little offshoots along the stem. It looks like some malfunction in the plants "brain" to do it this way instead.
I could just cut both rosettes and plant them separately, but while it doesn't tilt too much or breaks I will let it be like this. It's quite unusual.

It is one of those with the delicate powdery film (farina) that protects the leaves from the rain and sun. They still get sunburn though, especially here, so they do need to be protected from the harsh noon sun during the summer.

The powder comes off with the slightest touch so I try not to move them around too much. Impossible not to have some naked tips though after the cleaning.

I didn't know that the powder serves as protection from the sun, but it makes now a lot of sense. Btw, this plant of yours indeed has a strange shape, but it is interesting :)

I like them strange :) I will keep it as it is, maybe just plant it in bigger pot and straighten it up, and see when it goes.

Yes, leave it freedom :)

Reminds me, I have to do some work around my plants, as soon as possible.
Saw that nasty mini cotton-like thing in one of the succulents I got from you. Will do the "alcohol touch" treatment

I just did that yesterday.
You wont believe what I did. I chopped up and threw away the whole pot of those Kalanchoes I sent you :(
It was like 6 or 7 plants in it all about 80 cm tall. Heartbreaking... but.. they were so covered in aphids it was the only way. I saw some of the bugs on the flowers earlier, but now that I was cleaning all and checking the plants, it was all covered in them.
I got some cuttings, washed them and will start over. :( Damn...
Now I have a bunch of plants to repot and the season can start :)

Yea the alcohol will work. Just remove them with one of those ear cleaning sticks.

Just remove them with one of those ear cleaning sticks.

Ok, I did it today, after reading your response. Ear cleaning sticks with alcohol. I removed it easily and checked the other plants too. Nothing on the other ones, as far as I could see.

I chopped up and threw away the whole pot of those Kalanchoes I sent you :(

Oh no, you had to chop the long stems because of the aphids? 😞 Lucky bells? Poor plants... But the good cuttings will be planted and many new babies you will have :)))

Still, pity for the big plant. 😕

Cool! That should help. At least for a little while :p

Yea.. Lucky bells was not so lucky.
I threw away everything. The whole plant together with soil. Just kept some small cuttings that were the cleanest and will plant them in few days.

Almost the whole plant? Oh no :(

Indeed, not so lucky destiny of lucky bells.
I thought you would have many new plants from all of the cuttings. Hopefully, the few cuttings will do well, fingers crossed 🤞

I love your plant. I live in Kansas and it is cold to me, it was in the thirty's last week. Any I do not do well getting succulents to live. Your plant is beautiful.

Thank you!
They should be fine outside as long as they don't freeze and don't stay wet when it is very cold.
You could also try with Sempervivums - those can handle snow and frosts in the garden.

Thank you will look into it. i brought both plants in they do seem to be dead. So will try again soon.

Ohhh pity. Not even single leaf to save and propagate?

Yay! 🤗

I like the hard grown look. It could be a graptoveria, a hybrid of echeveria and graptopetalum

It could be a graptoveria

Hmm.. it could be indeed. I can't even remember where I got the leaf from.
The weird look is cool. I will let it be like this for now :)

It may even surprise you and turn out to be a graptosedum. The flowers will be interesting

Lovely plants. I was thinking about Echeveria Rosette, but than it can be Graptoveria ‘Debbie’ as well. Anyway, she is gorgeous

Thanks :)
That Debbie is pretty!! In google it seems it has thinner leaves though and seems more purple. Then others look very alike. There is so many crosses that it is possible my one doesn't even have a name.

Gorgeous plant. And I learned something new about it.
I always wanted one of these, but never got the chance of having it, but once I move back to El Salvador, I am getting me few of those.

Thank you!
Definitely show off your plants then :) I am sure they will like it there.

Those succulents are beautiful! 🤩💙
I've always wanted to have a mini garden of these types of plants 🥺⭐

It is never too later to have one ;)
