Life's challenges - do plants face them?

The current wave of low temperatures that have surprised us these days is a real test for the succulents that live with me. Or I just thought so. Two days ago, on Tuesday morning, I looked at the weather forecast on my phone. I almost couldn't believe it because, in all the years that I have lived in this country, this is the first time I have seen temperatures below zero. The early morning temperatures ranged between minus two degrees Celsius and zero. Wednesday morning was a bit better, the scale marked minus one degree Celsius, but it felt like minus four. My poor plants... I thought.

When I realized that this place where I moved (and my plants too) a few months ago would not have those mild temperatures we had by the sea, I thought about bringing inside some of the plants during the winter. For example, I moved the big Aeonium into the living room for a few weeks but it started losing its leaves.

Every day I picked up so many withered and fallen leaves around the pot that I thought it would stay just with naked stems. It definitely didn't like to live inside so I let it again be in the fresh air with the other ones. To my surprise, it stopped losing its leaves after just one day of being outside on the balcony. Happy plant again! 😀

Silly woman, I am not an indoor plant!

Ok, so they like living there despite the lower temperatures. 🤷‍♀ Moreover, some of them happily started to bloom, even though it took some time. It was late November when I noticed these hidden flower buds on Jade Tree and Lucky Bells.

Almost two months later here they are, blooming! :))

Let's get closer to see better these cute little white stars.

Here we are at the next life challenge these succulents are going through. Do you see the multitude of little black bugs on these little flowers in the next photo? Even though I sprayed them with nettle extract as an eco-friendly alternative to some stronger products, the hungry tenants didn't seem to mind.

They are still there, in the same number or it even seems to me that there are more and more of them as time goes by and the plant blooms. They all gathered around the fragile flowers and not around the thick, fleshy leaves because it is harder for these bugs to suck the juices from them.

Lucky Bells can call themselves lucky - at the moment, they are free from those little guys that attacked the Jade Tree. Let's hope it stays this way.

@elbuhito, I think you wanted to see my Jade while blooming. So, here it is, but please don't let the little owl attack the flowers too. They have enough trouble with the bugs...

The plants that you are growing can tolerate those temperatures for short periods. Lucky bells can be a little frost tender but they usually manage

Yeah, and they propagate like weeds haha 😁 so no worries. I was worried for Mister Aeonium, but it did worse while it was inside, so back outside it is happy again. 😇

Wow, I am surprised at the difference in temperatures, there extreme cold, here extreme heat, intermediate term please Mr. climate hahaha 😂😂

How beautiful is the Jade flower, yes I wanted to see it and my Jade flower have a Spanish sister, greetings over there haha ❤️❤️ Thank you for bringing them, I loved it!!! 😘😘

The plants are amazing, how they adapt to climate changes is incredible, some of them, not all 😂

As for Buhito, don't worry, maybe he will eat the bugs because he loves flowers and at least he knows how to respect them, I wish he would do the same with butterflies haha 🦉

your comments are amazing! It's truly incredible how plants adapt to their environment. And if Buhito helps by eating the bugs, he's definitely doing the right thing! 😂 Hope he shows the same respect for butterflies too!"

Buhito says he doesn't promise anything with the butterflies, that's why I keep him locked up or he goes out under my supervision hahaha 😂

Haha, that's funny! Such supervision is definitely needed, especially if the butterflies don’t follow his plans!

Extreme heat or cold - no extreme weather is good hahah

Thank you, I am glad to present your Jade tree's Spanish sister and with flowers this time. It just started to bloom so I think I still have some weeks to enjoy the little white flowers.

some of them, not all 😂

True. And when they don't adapt, then we are the plant killers 🤐 😆

I am coming just now to respond as I was indeed observing the little bugs and Buhito for all this time, he is helping me while I am at work. Soon I have to go again and come back just late in the evening, so if you don't find him don't worry, he is here by the Jade tree. 🤗

Me alegra saber que Buhito esta alli contigo y tranquilo, me da miedo cuando desaparece de repente jajajaja 😂

Well it seems that the succulents are doing better than expected with the cold, they even look better than those here in Venezuela when we are in the rainy season and they are not well protected... By the way, my mother and my wife use pH neutral soap solutions to eliminate small pests like those... The proportions of water/soap that they use are usually "by eye percentage" according to the number of visible pests, but I do not remember any plant being damaged by applying soap and water, but I do know that most of the mites and aphids disappear... Nice post @mipiano friend!...

These succulents learned with me that they have to adapt, wherever they go 😂
Thank you for the suggestions, I also combine from time to time dishwasher soap with water, of course, the ratio for this homemade liquid is measured by eye haha, that is how it goes with me too. So, I combine that recipe, but also use sometimes other products like the nettle, as I don't even try to use any other "poison" close to me or my plants. Thank you @jlinaresp 😇

"It's really amazing how well the succulents have adapted! Your experience with using soap and water to get rid of pests is so helpful. It sounds like your mother and wife have an effective method, and the plants stay safe too. Thanks for comments!"

Thank you for appreciating my comment friend!... Yes, succulents are really "very lively" plants and it is easy to become a fan of them!... My mother and my wife tend to use these "recipes" to take care of them and possibly the advice is inherited from previous generations... ;)

Your comment is truly heartwarming. Passing down such thoughtful care tips for succulents from generation to generation is truly remarkable. This family bond and love make your connection with these plants even more special. Thank you sincerely for sharing!

Definitely among the living beings we are the weakest to adapt to changes, without having to resort or other elements of protection of course. Your plants are blooming beautifully, a pity about the insects, my knowledge in this area is null, so I can only send you my best wishes for a healthy solution.

I wouldn't imagine that you would also begin to suffer with these low temperatures, moving away from the seaside makes a noticeable difference even though it's in the south. Although it surely has a lot of advantages as well.

Well, we didn't experience these low temperatures by the seaside, or I just forgot maybe haha. Yes, there was snow some years in the nearby mountains, which were visible from my former home but those were some higher peaks. Now, we are 30km inland from the seaside, not so bad temperature-wise but still noticeable. 😆

Wow your garden is getting beautiful with low temperature, not like me that you know I have to wear a lot of clothes jajajaja -1° that's to much for me 🥶 but your plants are doing amazing , it's curious about the bugs because they normally stay in places with highest temperatures like here 😅
Muchas gracias por enseñarnos tu bellas plantas señorita mi piano de los jardines 😁

Gracias Mister Pumarte, today the temperatures are a bit higher, though yesterday it was raining a lot and my umbrella broke while I was running from one lesson to another 😂
Las pequeñas pulgas van y vienen como quieren, it seems they are not sensible to temperatures.

Ellan are outdoor plants and yes, it is possible for them to change colour with low temperatures but inside they do not adapt, I have already tried like you and it did not work. They are rustic plants and they will hold up... I hope so. It has never been below freezing here, but don't do it!

Well, if they like outside they indeed have to stay there then, on the balcony 😇

My friend told me it would not be freezing here either 😂 but, that is what came with the cold wave

I think this year's cold snap came later... yesterday it was a bit cold here and now it's getting colder... or is it that I'm already old 🤣

Ohh so pretty! The little stars, not the nasty aphids! They like to appear on some of my succulents flowers too. Bad tenants!

Bad, bad tenants, they should get fired! 😁

The plants did well.
I especially liked the bloom of Lucky bells

Thank you @ludmila.kyriakou 😊 🍀

😊

We had -10°C this morning 😆😆😆

I just posted about the weather, what a coincidence.

That's a nice coincidence, I hope the temperatures here don't go to -10 though hahaha

Rohanok, késő estig dolgozom 👋 🤗

You have beautiful plants. The succulents are amazing, they're cute. Honestly I want to experience a below 1 degree Celsius weather because in our place we only have two seasons, summer and rainy days.

Thank you.
Cold can be fun too, it depends how we are used to these temperatures. ;)

Yep, definitely the plant was getting naked at indoors as a protest to be returned, and she got it!!!. Nice plants by the way, I have a few here and although bugs are no trouble so far, the cat and birds really are, but, they're still alive, the plants I mean,...oh...cat and birds too.hahaha

Good that both the plants and the pets are alive ;)

Your plants are amazing! My parents are huge plant lovers, so this is seriously inspiring! Keep up the fantastic work!

Thanks 🍀
Having plants is nice and inspiring indeed

They also thrive to survive. And their doing pretty well. Those bugs are really frustrating sometimes. They would just appear out of the blue.

Yes, pests sometimes attack teh plants but in general they are doing well, even on cold weather these days

"Nature is truly amazing! It's fascinating how plants can quickly adapt to their surroundings. Your Aeonium's story is so lovely. Hope it thrives even more in the fresh air of your balcony!"

Thank you, I am sure it will thrive, I also want to move it into a bigger pot, it needs to be replanted soon

Your thought is absolutely right. Moving it to a bigger pot will help it grow even better. Best wishes for your plant!

Wow, very beautiful✨

Interesting story. We should know, nature has its own way to survive, even in extreme weather.
