Osaka-Kansai Expo. 2025

It was reported that Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai will close in just one month. Around the time I was thinking that I’d really like to visit once more before it ends, I received photos from my uncle and my sisters who had gone. I was surprised to realize that it’s already been four months since I last went in May.

When I visited with my mom, my sister, and her daughter last time, we couldn’t enter any of the pavilions at all, and I thought it would be nice to at least get into one. In the photos my sisters sent me, there was the French pavilion and the Italian pavilion, and I was really moved. I want to go!

大阪関西万博２０２５があと１カ月で閉幕されると報道があった。そして、閉幕までにはもう一度行きたいなぁと思っていた時に、叔父さんや姉たちから万博の写真が届いた。前回５月に万博に行って、既に４か月がたっていると思うとびっくりする。前回オカンと一緒に行った時は、全くパビリオンの中に入ることができず、１つぐらいはパビリオンに入ってみたいなぁと思っていた。そこで、姉たちが送ってくれた写真にはフランスのパビリオンがあって、とても感動した。いってみたい！

I did a short study abroad in France for just three months, and it brings back memories. Actually, the fact that I studied French in my student days has turned into something of an embarrassing part of my past, and nowadays I tend to hide it or avoid mentioning that I can't speak French at all (LOL!). On top of that, when I did a bookshelf clean up earlier this year, I sold many of the French textbooks I bought back then to BookOff. Ah — I want to give myself credit for how hard I worked in that period, but at the same time, I wonder why I ultimately gave up studying French and couldn't realize my dream of working in Africa. Life doesn't go the way you expect, and thinking back to those days studying French makes me feel that strongly. 

フランスには３か月だけ短期留学していたことがあり、その当時のことを思い出す。実は学生時代にフランス語を勉強していたと言うことは、今では完全な私の黒歴史になり、全くフランス語が話せないことを少し隠して触れないように生きている。（笑）　その上、今年になって本棚の棚卸をした時に学生時代に買った多くのフランス語の参考書をBookOffへ売却してしまった。あぁ、こんなに頑張っていた時期もあったんだなぁと自分自身を誉めてあげたいと同時に、どうして結局はフランス語の勉強をあきらめ、アフリカで仕事をする夢もかなえることができなかった。人生とは思ったようにならないなぁとフランス語をかつて勉強していた当時のことを思い出すと感じてしまう。

Apparently, they also went to the Italian pavilion. I’ve only been to Italy twice, and both times were for business, so I never had the chance to do any sightseeing. The first time was for training, and I remember being incredibly nervous. I went alone to a local pizzeria, where a very friendly man recommended a pizza to me, and that became a lasting memory.

The second time was a business trip to Milan with a client, and my presentation was a complete failure. I couldn’t close the deal, and it felt as if the company had just paid a huge sum for me to take an overseas trip. Bitter laugh. For months afterward, within the company, I carried this bitter feeling of “Please don’t mention the Italy trip!”

Italy is really a country you should visit, forgetting about work, and just for sightseeing. There aren’t many countries that can make you feel so happy and alive. I’d love to go again someday.

イタリアのパビリオンにも行ったらしい。イタリアは２回だけ行ったことがある。２回とも出張で、全く観光ができなかった。１回目は研修で行って、緊張しまくっていたのを思い出す。地元のピザ屋さんに１人で行って、すごく気さくなおっちゃんにピザを進められて食べた思い出、そして、２回目はミラノへお客さんと営業に行って、プレゼンが大失敗して成約に結びつくことができず、大金を会社に出してもらって海外旅行にいった感じになった。苦笑。その後は数か月、社内で「イタリア出張にはふれないでくれ！」と言った感じで過ごしたのを苦々しく覚えている。イタリアには仕事を忘れて観光しに行く国だなぁと感じている。あんなに楽しく、幸せにしてくれる国は少ない。また行ってみたい。

What my uncle and sisters were most excited about was eating at Kura Sushi. Kura Sushi is a sushi chain that originated in Osaka and is beloved by the people of Osaka. I love Kura Sushi as well and often go there.

It seems that Kura Sushi also has a booth at Expo 2025 Osaka, and they said that being able to eat there became one of their best memories. I’m also hoping to go at least once before the Expo closes.

叔父と姉たちが最高に楽しみにしていたのがこのくら寿司での食事。くら寿司は大阪出身の寿司屋さんで、大阪府民にとって愛されている寿司屋さん。私もくら寿司が大好きでよく行く。今回の大阪万博２０２５でもくら寿司が出店している様で、ここで食べることができたことが最高の思い出になったと言っていた。わたしも閉会までには一度行きたいなぁと思っている。
