Where the Lérez River forms an estuary at its mouth is the city of Pontevedra, capital of the province of the same name in the autonomous community of Galicia, Spain. From the southern part of the community, entering from Castile through the province of Ourense, I arrived by the national highway N-120 that connects both cities. This tour of this inland area of southern Galicia is a great example of the characteristics of this unique land. I arrived in the city of Pontevedra and on the river side, after passing through the avenue that runs parallel to it, I saw a good, wide place where I could park my car and begin the route through the city. The first thing I noticed when I arrived were those characteristic bridges of different styles and periods. Later I learned that the city was born and grew precisely because of one of them that was part of one of the important Roman roads in the region.

Donde el rio Lérez forma en su desembocadura un estuario se encuentra la ciudad de Pontevedra, capital de la provincia del mismo nombre en la comunidad autónoma de Galicia, España. Desde la parte sur de la comunidad entrando desde castilla por la provincia de Ourense llegué por la carretera nacional N-120 que une ambas ciudades. Este recorrido por esta zona del interior del sur de Galicia es una gran muestra de las características de esta tierra singular. Llegué a la ciudad de Pontevedra y en la parte del río, después de pasar por la avenida que transcurre paralela a él vi un buen lugar amplio donde poder aparcar mi coche y empezar la ruta por la ciudad. Lo primero que me fije al llegar fueron esos puentes tan característicos y de diferentes estilos y épocas. Más tarde me informe que precisamente la ciudad nació y creció por uno de ellos que era parte de una de las importantes vías romanas de la región.

From the port area I headed towards the city centre along a large pedestrian avenue with emblematic buildings such as the Pontevedra Provincial Council and some institutions of the Xunta de Galicia. Firstly along a street that branched off into other narrower and older streets where I began to observe the Galician essence of this city. Stone, arcades where you could walk on the many rainy days that predominate in this region and large windows and galleries to take advantage of the sunlight in the houses. The city was awakening and was presenting itself before me with all its essence and movement and made me discover characteristic corners of the cities in Galicia.

Desde la zona del puerto me dirigí hacia el centro de la ciudad por una gran avenida peatonal con edificios emblemáticos como la diputación de Pontevedra y de algunas instituciones de la Xunta de Galicia. Primeramente por una calle que bifurcaba en otras más estrechas y antiguas donde empecé a observar la esencia gallega de esta ciudad. Piedra, soportales por donde caminar los muchos días lluviosos que predomina en esta región y grandes ventanales y galerías para aprovechar la luz solar en las viviendas. La ciudad iba despertando y se presentaba ante mí con toda su esencia y movimiento y me hacia descubrir rincones característicos de las ciudades en Galicia.

On one of the main avenues, a group of “gaiteiros”, musicians from the region with their bagpipes and other instruments, were going to begin a tour of the streets with a regional dance group to liven up the morning in the city. Life in this town is continuous and this type of street shows are something that enriches and gives essence to the regional customs of these lands in the north of the country.

En una de las principales avenidas un grupo de “gaiteiros”, músicos de la región con sus gaitas y otros instrumentos iban a empezar una ronda por las calles con un grupo de baile regional para amenizar esa mañana en la ciudad. La vida en esta villa es continua y este tipo de espectáculos en las calles son algo que enriquece y le da esencia a las costumbres regionales de estas tierras del norte del país.

In the city centre, in a square where different streets meet, I found one of the most popular churches in the city, the Church of the Pilgrim Virgin. I asked and was told that it was part of a tradition to stop at this virgin when travelling the Portuguese pilgrimage route to the capital of the region, Santiago de Compostela. I walked around its perimeter and went inside to see the structure and the image of the virgin inside.

En el centro de la ciudad en una plaza donde se juntan diferentes calles encontré una de las iglesias más populares de la ciudad, la iglesia de la Virgen Peregrina. Pregunte y me comentaron que formaba parte de una tradición el detenerse en esta virgen al recorrer el camino portugués de peregrinación hacia la capital de la región, Santiago de Compostela. Recorrí su perímetro y entre para ver la estructura y la imagen de la virgen en su interior.

I also wanted to see part of the city from another perspective and little by little I left its old historic center towards its newer part. Avenues with daily life, shops, banks, avenues and urban art distracted me in this beautiful city. I was very surprised by the fountain with the girls playing with the hoop while the jets diffused the water turning it into a spectacle.

También quería ver parte la ciudad desde otra perspectiva y poco a poco me fui saliendo de su centro antiguo histórico hacia su parte más nueva. Avenidas con la vida cotidiana, comercios, bancos, alamedas y arte urbano me iban distrayendo en esta hermosa ciudad. Me sorprendió mucho la fuente con las niñas jugando con el aro mientras que los chorros difuminaban el agua convirtiéndola en un espectáculo.

The city of Pontevedra is a good starting point for a complete tour of the autonomous community of Galicia due to its location in the region. I suggest spending at least two days there.
