Embarking on a journey through South Africa unveils a tapestry of breathtaking landscapes and unforgettable experiences. Hit the open road along the Garden Route and Route 62, two of the country’s most scenic drives. This getaway is sure to make you feel like you've escaped to another world, featuring scenic semi-desert landscapes, quaint beach towns, forests, lakes, vineyards, and scenic semi-desert towns.
The Allure of the Garden Route
The Garden Route is a must-see in South Africa. Stretching 300 kilometers (190 miles), it’s famous for its stunning views and diverse landscapes. This road trip takes you from Mossel Bay to Storms River Mouth, showcasing mountains, forests, and beautiful beaches along the way.
This route is not just about sights; it's also about charming towns that invite us to explore their local cultures. We found ourselves enchanted by sleepy beach towns where life moves slowly and every corner holds a new discovery.
Garden Route: Stops Along the Way
As we traveled along the Garden Route, several stops stood out:
- Mossel Bay: boasts one of the mildest climates on the planet—second only to Hawaii for its abundance of sunshine. This makes it a year-round destination for sun-seekers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Whether you're lounging on its stunning beaches or exploring the scenic coastal trails, Mossel Bay offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure under the golden rays. To feel like a local a drive around the point is a must.
- George: Nestled between the mountains and the sea, George is affectionately known as "The Gateway to The Garden Route." This charming town is renowned for its stunning golf courses, mountain passes, beaches and the beautiful George Botanical Gardens.
- Wilderness: Picture golden beaches and serene lagoon systems creating a tranquil escape. The atmosphere here is blissfully laid-back, making it the perfect spot for a quaint dinner filled with delicious local flavours.
- Sedgefield: boasts an impressive collection of five stunning beaches, each offering a unique slice of paradise. Beyond its natural beauty, the town radiates an incredibly welcoming community vibe that makes every visitor feel right at home. Its also a perfect place to create a base for your travels as it fits perfectly in the middle of the heart of the garden route. Weekends here are a true delight, as local markets come alive, brimming with fresh produce and artisanal crafts. The picturesque lakes offer endless opportunities for fishing and outdoor adventures. Don't miss dining at Oysters Edge Restaurant, where you can savour fresh coastal oysters straight from the ocean. For an unforgettable experience, head to Cloud 9 viewpoint, where you can enjoy stunning views of Sedgefield's lakes and estuaries, and it's also one of the best spots for paragliding in the world!
- Knysna: is known for its stunning lagoon and an absolute haven for oyster enthusiasts! Here, you can savour both wild coastal oysters and luscious farmed varieties—a seafood experience that's not to be missed! Recently crowned Kfm's Best Dorpie of the Year for 2024 for the third time in a row, take some time to explore the iconic Knysna Heads, wander through the enchanting Knysna Forests, and keep an eye out for the rare Knysna elephant.
- Plettenberg Bay is where the lush Bitou vineyards gracefully meet unspoiled coastlines, creating a stunning backdrop for your adventure. A highlight of your visit should definitely be the Robberg Nature Reserve—it's an absolute must-see! This natural wonderland offers breathtaking views, and fantastic hiking trails that will leave you in awe.
- Storms River: Storms is the stunning grand finale of our Garden Route adventure, where the rugged coastline dramatically meets the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean. This breathtaking spot is a paradise for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike, offering an array of activities such as kayaking, hiking, and exploring the impressive Tsitsikamma National Park
Garden Route linking to the Route 62
After enjoying the coastal beauty of the Garden Route, head inland to Oudtshoorn via the Outeniqua Mountain Pass—a scenic link between these two regions.
Oudtshoorn offers striking semi-desert landscapes that contrast beautifully with what we've seen so far on our trip. It’s known as the “ostrich capital” due to numerous ostrich farms dotting this region's landscape.
Driving through this area felt like entering another world entirely—from lush coastlines to vast open spaces filled with artful charm in each small town we passed through on our way back towards Cape Town.
Route 62: A Scenic Alternative
After exploring the Garden Route, we ventured onto Route 62, a fantastic alternative that offers its own unique charm. This scenic route is about 70 kilometers shorter than the Garden Route and takes you through the stunning Klein Karoo region.
Driving along Route 62, we were greeted with breathtaking semi-desert vistas. The landscape changes quickly from lush greenery to dry, open spaces filled with rocky hills and vineyards. It felt like we were on a new adventure every mile. Most importantly, don’t forget to look up at night— the stars here are simply breath-taking, some of the best we've ever experienced!
This road connects us back toward Cape Town while passing through 14 charming towns. Each town has its own character and local attractions worth stopping for. We enjoyed taking our time here, soaking in the relaxed atmosphere.
Charming Towns on Our Journey through Route 62
Along both routes, several towns captured our hearts:
- Oudtshoorn: is an absolute gem that deserves a spot on your travel itinerary! Known as the ostrich capital of the world, this charming town offers a unique blend of experiences. Don’t miss the chance to explore the fascinating Cango Caves, a stunning natural wonder that will leave you in awe. Whether you're fascinated by these giant Ostrich birds or the mesmerizing underground formations, Oudtshoorn promises an unforgettable adventure.
- Ladismith: is a hidden gem, especially renowned for its deliciously creamy cheeses that are simply a must-try! Don't miss the opportunity to indulge in local dairy delights while soaking in the beautiful countryside views.
- Barrydale: is an artistic enclave bursting with vibrant murals and creative shops that highlight the incredible talent of local artisans. It's truly an artist's haven, with creativity waiting around every corner. On route into Barrydale visit Ronnie's Sex Shop, known as the “oddest pub in South Africa, inspired by a practical joke. To soak in the town's artistic vibe, be sure to stop by Creme and Diesel, a delightful spot that embodies the spirit of Barrydale and serves some of the best burgers and milkshakes in South Africa.
