Exploring Fuerteventura - The Island of Winds

in TravelFeed4 years ago

Fuerteventura, which when translated to English means "strong wind" is located in the atlantic ocean west of Spain and Afrika.

A lot of people might tell you that it is like visiting the moon or mars and that's because the island is quite barren. There are no forests and only few places (mostly man made) that harbor plant life. As a result there are also (to my knowledge) no larger animals inhabiting the island.

But the island is still worth visiting as a desert landscape has its own beauty and in fact the coastal areas and the ocean are very beautiful. Here I share with you a trip to one of the smaller hills on the eastern part of the island.

As there is a lot of wind here, it definitely makes sense to install wind farms here and so you might bumb into one of these on your stay here.

The ground is very sandy, but if you look more closely you will discover that there are lots of shells. How did they arrive here when the ocean is so far away (several kilometers)? Well my layman opinion is that the ocean was probably a lot closer in the geological past. There were also quite a few animal bones lying around.

Interestingly, I found a little grave for "Boni"- which was apparently the "best dog ever". May it rest in peace <3

Near the top of the hill there were some interesting formations in the ground, which were probably carved out by wind and water. Many people thought that it was a good idea to leave some graffitis here (which is something that people always like to do).

In this final picture you can see an overview of the place: On the right there is the eastern ocean and on the left there is the western ocean. In between there are perhaps 10-20km. And if I remember correctly this is the narrowest part of the island and it is a lot longer. In the distance you can see the fairly high mountains which I will explorer in the future. SO stay tuned :)
