Capturing The Different Phases Of The Moon Close Up

in Astronomy4 years ago (edited)

Recently I had a 150-600 mm Tamron lens in my possession. I got it for one purpose only and it was to try it out on the moon and see how much detail I can actually capture of the surface. Since I have a crop sensor Nikon camera body that lens actually equals 225-900mm for me which is pretty much a small telescope length already.

I took all these photos over the course of two weeks and sadly I was not able to capture all phases of the moon because of the cloudy weather or moon appearing in early morning hours.
All the photos are stacked images of about 30 moon shots. Not much but it already reduced the noise quite a bit.

This is my most favorite shot and the most recent one I took. Overall I was really amazed of the detail I was able to capture on my images. I really love astrophotography. It is amazing to capture things like this yourself.

The next shot is of the full moon. Well, almost full moon. Here you don't see many craters on the surface because the sun shines straight on the moon and does not cast any shadows on the edges of craters. You can see some craters on the lower side of the moon.

The next shot is taken about two days after the previous shot. Here you can clearly see a shadow being cast in the side of the moon already.

Lastly, this is the first shot I took and it was before the full moon. I consider it the failed attempt because it is a little blurry. The wind was on the night was unforgiving and shook most of the shots I took. As you know even the slightest vibration on at 900mm results in a failed shot.

I also experimented with stacking two shots in one where there are craters both on the right side and the lower side of the moon. This is the result. I would love to get a shot of the full moon with all the craters visible but I'm not sure if it would work out the way I imagine.

I hoped to get a shot when to moon is visible as very thin but unfortunately as I said in the beginning of the post the weather and timing weren't suitable for this and I had to give the lens back. Hopefully, at some point I will get this shot as well and when I do, I make sure to post the result here as well.

Niiice, beautifully captured - I love the terminator line in the first image.

Have a nice day...

Thanx! Yep, I try to do it whenever I get my hands on that lens again!

wtf nagu nasa footage ju

Peaaegu :D

Definitely the first one is the best of all, it has even more detail than the others, the night sky has fantastic wonders for us.

Yep, with the light coming from the side of the moon. Getting a detailed surface is much better.

Awesome! 😎
