STREET ART #172 – Something old and something new in Stavanger (Norway)

In January this year I was back in Stavanger after a long absence. I went there to visit a friend who has lived here for many years. The nice thing is that she knowns the city and the street art scene very well. I felt like I was on a guided street art tour. Here is a small selection from a tour of the city.

This is a mural that was painted back in 2009 during the Nuart Festival (Stavangers own street art festival). It still looks pretty good. But then I think it has survived wind and rain because of a footbridge over which means it doesn't get wet. The artist is Logan Hicks.

«Boremann og Johanna»

Look at the sculpture in the foreground. This sculpture of two children, "Boremann and Johanna" are the motif of the painting on the wall behind. The artist is Ernest Zacharevic who did the painting in 2019. He was the first street artist I became a real fan of. This amazing artist from Lithuania is based in Penang, Malaysia. He became known to the world when he in 2012 created 6 murals in Georgetown, Malaysia. Amazing work that depicts everyday life. The most famous of his work is probably the murals that combines a painting with installations. I think you might have seen the motorcycle with a boy and the two children on a bicycle. Amazing works.

«The Last Traveller»

This large mural at a parkeringshus was painted in 2016 as part of the Nuart Festival.. The artist is Nimi & RH74. These two are a Norwegeaon duo who has beeing working together here. It's not the first time they have been working together. Nimi was born in South-Africa while RH74 is based in Stavanger.

The person in monochrome was painted by Martin Watson, a Norwegian street artist. But the colorful top was painted by someone else. We knew we had read about who, but right now I can't remember who.

«The Girl with the Tiger Tatoo»

A large mural near the harbour. It is rather new. Painted in 2023, during the Nuart Festival. Notice the tiger on her back. The artist is Nychos.

This huge mural was painted by Norwegean street artist Pøbel as part of the mural festival in 2023.

The painting measures 3,600 square meters and is thus the largest painting in Norway. The farmer sitting on the silos is dressed in Felleskjøpet's work clothes. It is a good fit since it is Felleskjøpet Agri that owns the silos. These silos on the quay in Stavanger contain the largest grain warehouse in Northern Europe. The silos were built in 1965 and have a huge capacity - 195,00 tonnes.

Another painting by Nimi. Notice the white dove and what it is doing.. I don't know when it was painted, but I think it must have been after Russia's invasion in Ukraine.

These very cute rats are found on power boxes in the center of the city. The artist is Hama Woods. She is a Norweagean artist. She works with both stencils and spraypaint. Many of her works has themes that connects nature with humanity. I have seen quite a few pieces of her work around our country.

Both of these sit slightly up on a house wall and rather small. It's easy to just walk past. Fortunately, I'm here with a local who knows exactly where every small piece of art is located! The artist is Carrie Reichard who did both in 2018.
