Creativity and the book (EN-ES)

Greetings, friends of @Humanitas, I hope you are very well, with health and well-being.

Following the kind invitation of @sofiaquino98, I share my participation in the initiative La creatividad, el libro y la conciencia and invite my dear friends @mafalda2018 and @maeugenia.

On this occasion, I will focus on two of the issues raised by this initiative: the book and creativity. But first, I think it is worthwhile to look at the concepts of reading and creativity.

Reading is the cognitive process by which we acquire knowledge, develop skills and broaden our understanding of the world around us. On the other hand, creativity is the ability to imagine, to invent, to create. This capacity also allows us to think of viable, feasible solutions to everyday problems.

I believe that these two concepts are reciprocally related and complement each other, because, through reading we feed our mind and our imagination and in this way, we cultivate and stimulate our creativity.

Atendiendo a la amable invitación de @sofiaquino98, comparto mi participación en la iniciativa La creatividad, el libro y la conciencia e invito a mis apreciadas amigas @mafalda2018 y @maeugenia.

En esta ocasión, me enfocaré en dos de los temas que plantea esta iniciativa: el libro y la creatividad. Pero antes, me parece conveniente que veamos los conceptos de lectura y de creatividad.

La lectura es el proceso cognitivo por el cual adquirimos conocimientos, desarrollamos habilidades y ampliamos nuestra comprensión del mundo que nos rodea. Por otra parte, la creatividad es la capacidad de imaginar, de inventar, de crear. Esta capacidad, también, nos permite pensar en soluciones viables, factibles a los problemas que se presentan en la cotidianidad.

Considero que estos dos conceptos se relacionan recíprocamente, se complementan, pues, a través de la lectura alimentamos nuestra mente y nuestra imaginación y de este modo, cultivamos y estimulamos nuestra creatividad.

Reading allows us to open our minds to an infinite universe of knowledge and learning, it allows us to see the world with different eyes. Books are the window through which we receive the light that enriches us as human beings. In each page of a book we discover new worlds, we travel to faraway places and to past times. When we read, we visualize in our minds the scenes described in words, and we recreate environments through our imagination. We empathize with the characters in the stories we follow and are able to understand what they think, what they live and even what they feel: we suffer the sorrows that make them sad and the joys that make them happy.

Books work their magic when they light the flame of our imagination and, in addition, they encourage our creativity, because they make us reflect on what we read and we start thinking about the possible twists and turns of the stories, possible endings and even endings totally different from the ones we have read.

La lectura nos permite abrir nuestra mente a un universo infinito de conocimientos y aprendizajes, nos permite ver el mundo con otros ojos. Los libros son la ventana por la cual recibimos la luz que nos enriquece como seres humanos. En cada una de las páginas de un libro descubrimos nuevos mundos, viajamos a lugares lejanos y a épocas pasadas. Cuando leemos, visualizamos en nuestra mente las escenas descritas con palabras, y recreamos ambientes, a través de nuestra imaginación. Nos compenetramos con los personajes de las historias que seguimos y somos capaces de comprender lo que piensan, lo que viven y hasta lo que sienten: sufrimos las penas que los acongojan y las alegrías que les dan felicidad.

Los libros hacen su magia cuando encienden la llama de nuestra imaginación y, además, fomentan nuestra creatividad, pues nos hacen reflexionar sobre lo que leemos y nos ponemos a pensar en los posibles giros de las historias, en finales posibles y, hasta en finales totalmente diferentes a los que hemos leído.

Now, I believe that creativity is not a gift of a few, of a privileged few, but that it is an ability that we all have and can cultivate and develop, through sustained practice over time, as if it were a muscle to be exercised and made to grow.

As we already know that we all have the intrinsic capacity to be creative, what we must do is to take actions to develop and maximize it. One of the actions that we can put into practice to enhance our creativity, to germinate that little seed that is within us and become a leafy tree, is to read, and here is how you can see the relationship between reading, books and creativity.

Making reading a habit will allow us to develop our critical thinking, broaden our vision of the world, stimulate our imagination, and therefore, will make us more creative beings, capable of dreaming, imagining, creating and reinventing the world around us.

Ahora bien, creo que la creatividad no es un don de unos pocos, de unos privilegiados, sino que es una habilidad que todos tenemos y podemos cultivar y desarrollar, a través de la práctica sostenida en el tiempo, como si fuera un músculo que hay que ejercitar y hacer crecer.

Como ya sabemos que todos tenemos la capacidad intrínseca de ser creativos, lo que debemos hacer es tomar acciones para desarrollarla y maximizarla. Una de las acciones que podemos poner en práctica para potenciar nuestra creatividad, para que germine esa semillita que está dentro de nosotros y se convierta en un árbol frondoso, es leer y, he aquí como se puede ver la relación entre la lectura, el libro y la creatividad.

Hacer de la lectura un hábito, nos permitirá desarrollar nuestro pensamiento crítico, ampliar nuestra visión del mundo, estimular nuestra imaginación, y por lo tanto, nos hará seres más creativos, capaces de soñar, imaginar, crear y reinventar el mundo que nos rodea.

Finally, the invitation is to cultivate the habit of reading, to discover in books the light of wisdom that will enrich us and make us free and creative. With regard to these last words, a poem by Elías Calixto Pompa that I learned in my childhood came to my mind and I would like to share it here:
